Chinese New Year is coming. A mandarin orange just taught you incident response.

I watched a classroom experiment video, and I could not unsee the cybersecurity lesson.

A teacher placed a peeled mandarin in a jar filled with water and asked the children:

“How can we get this mandarin out without the water overflowing?”

The kids did not rush.

✨ They established cause-and-effect relationships.
✨ They made inferences through observation.
✨ They used their attention, focus, & fine motor skills.

That is incident response in real life.
Because most cybersecurity work feels like that jar.

You need to patch something.
But you cannot take the business down.

You need to isolate one machine.
But you cannot break everyone else.

You need to block an attacker.
But you cannot lock out your real users.

So the real question is not how to remove the threat.
It is how to fix it without creating a bigger incident.

The best incident responders do three things first.

✨ They observe before they act.
✨ They test small before they go big.
✨ They stay calm when the pressure is loud.

Anyone can remove the mandarin.
The real skill is keeping the water in the jar.

Sometimes the best cybersecurity lessons come from mandarin oranges.

Some malls in Shenzhen, China, have installed restroom stall doors with special “smart glass.” 

The glass is normally frosted and opaque. But if a smoke sensor detects someone smoking inside a cubicle, the system can trigger the glass to turn transparent within seconds, and an alarm may also go off. Reports say the goal is to stop people from smoking in indoor public toilets after repeated complaints. 

The idea has gone viral because it can reveal the smoker inside the stall the moment smoke is detected.

🔍 A few real-life examples:

🧳 Security checks are among the tightest anywhere.
Luggage screening is system-driven, not manual guesswork.
Your luggage tag is scanned via a WeChat mini programme (an app-within-an-app).
About five minutes of live checking - then you move on.
Queues redesigned. Flow optimised.

🛗 Ever seen an elevator with an oversized button?
Yes, deliberately big.
Because 99% of people press that button.
So they made it the biggest.
Simple. Practical. User-first.

🔌 In major cities, free USB charging points are common along roads and public spaces.
Quietly practical. Thought through.

🚻 Public washrooms surprised me the most.
Nine out of ten have warm water faucets.
Small detail. Very human.

🍽️ Food delivery is brutally efficient.
Order placed.
Fifteen minutes later, food arrives.
Cold beers included.
No tipping. No chasing.

📱 I lost my tablet on 31 December.
Only realised it on 2 January.

💍 I lost my smart ring at a theatre on 3 January night.
Retrieved it the following evening.

📞 I even managed to recover a mobile number terminated more than five years ago.
Not through forms or hotlines -
but through relationships that still work within the system.

No drama.
No endless forms.

Revisit the assumptions.
Look again.

⚠️ 遇到面試詐騙 ，被盜走了 2 萬美金，請大家幫我分享出去：

兩週前更新了 LinkedIn Profile，馬上就很多人來敲。
其中一個稍微談了一下工作內容跟薪資，想說還不錯她就問要不要聊聊看。她說公司產品目前已經有一個 MVP（類似產品原型，還不能發表的階段），叫我先看看有什麼想法。然後她就傳了一個公開的個人 GitHub Repo，這個帳號底下只有這個專案，看起來有點詭異。

下載了之後，稍微看了一下 code 覺得東西蠻多的。一般來說我看到開源的專案會直接跑跑看實際上成品是什麼，但跟她的對話還有這個 Repo ，讓我有一種不對的感覺。
於是我用 DeepWiki （用 AI 幫 GitHub 專案建 Context 的對話工具）掃了這個專案，然後問他這個專案有沒有什麼安全問題。DeepWiki 給我了幾個可疑的地方但我看過都是假警報。但我不信邪又拿去給 Gemini CLI 掃，結果還真的掃出一個地方可以 Remote Execution （遠端遙控你的電腦做事）。

原本故事到這裡就結束了，結果後來一查發現，其中一個專案作者的攻擊，包含 VS Code 的自動執行腳本（.vscode tasks）。也就是說，只要用 VS Code 系列的 IDE （像是 Cursor）開過這個資料夾，不用執行什麼東西，你的電腦就後門全開了。

我想想我在查他的 code 的時候已經開過了，所以回頭看一下我的 Metamask 錢包（虛擬貨幣錢包）。果然，裡面 2 萬美金已經被搬空了。

我已經謹慎到 clone 完連 npm install 都不跑，沒想到還是跌了這一跤，現在才知道 vscode 有自動執行的功能，真的是太危險了！
