So do yourself a favor, keep your stress low, and save the emails until you’re emotionally prepared.

My brain said “Nope.” 
My text said “Sure, happy to help.”

My first reaction to the DM:

I don’t have time for this.
I’m busy.
I’m tired.
I need a break.
I can’t fit one more thing in.

And the embarrassing one…
→ “Does this help my business at all?” [it doesn’t.]

All the excuses showed up. 

A student from the University of Texas asked if she could interview me about leadership for a class.

Instead of texting the polite “I don’t have the capacity at the moment…”, I wrote back:

“Happy to help. When’s your deadline?”

We hopped on a call the next day and spent about 35 minutes talking about all things leadership.

What’s ironic is, I spend a lot of time coaching clients on how to say no, because so many talented people stretch themselves thin trying to make everyone happy. 

We work on boundaries. We work on buying a little time before answering. We work on saving energy for the bigger, more impactful things.

But when we do have the capacity
and when we get a chance to lift someone else up
it is worth taking a breath before we immediately say no.

So next time, instead of asking,
“What’s in it for me?”
try
“What have I done for someone else lately?”

Learning when to say no is hard. Knowing when to say yes can be just as hard. If you need a sounding board for either, I’m around.

When I left teaching, my #1 wish was to make more money and make sh!t happen. 

[I could appear demanding at times - kind, but very…uh, persistent…]

If someone came into my office, I continued working while carrying on a conversation bc I was “so busy.”

After multiple promotions, I’d finally “made it” - with a VP title to prove it. 

But I realized I wasn’t even close to finished!

Learning, not showing, what I can do. 

The moment I made that mindset shift, I changed. 

[literally just like that]

From then on, the moment someone stepped into my office, I stopped whatever I was doing, physically shifted my body to face them, looked at them and smiled with a “hi!”

Only then did I feel like I would truly succeed. 

But my learning, my development, my improvements are never done. 


Our definition of “making it” changes with different stages and seasons in our lives. 

And it’s not the same path or timing as others. 


Look, we don’t know what we don’t know. 

And we don’t learn what’s next for us until we’re ready for what’s next.

Be worried when the interview goes too smoothly.

The worst boss I had was one of my best interviews.
[I mean, I was offered and accepted the job, so]

-He was curious.
-He was interested.
-He was responsive.
-He wanted my ideas.
-He was open-minded.
-He was so easy to talk to.
-He didn't show any red flags.

Fast forward to the real world.

-He was unavailable.
-He was a closed-minded guy.
-He was completely set in his ways.
-He did not have an open door policy.
-He was super intimidating to his employees.

Honestly, a nightmare to work for.
And he was unethical when it came to hiring practices.
But I didn't find that out until later.

When it feels too good to be true...
it doesn't have to mean that it is,
but keep digging to be sure.

I’m spending my Sunday with deer in the backyard and thinking about how many “opposites” I enjoy.

We don’t have to pick a lane.
We get to be alllll of it.


What are two opposite things you love?

If you're looking to pivot, now isn't the best time.

BUT if you're committed, you CAN and WILL do it.
With strategy and time.

Don't focus on the title. 
Focus on the job duties.

Be open to a salary range that may not be your top of range.
You can grow.

Your title doesn't make you a leader.
Your actions do.

The title will come.
Along with the compensation.
