If I had to start creating my personal content all over again, I wouldn’t buy a camera or a mic first.

I’d hire an editor.
Here’s why

The camera? Easy. 
The mic? Easy. 
You can buy those.

The real bottleneck, the thing that slows most video creators down is editing.

Think about it:
You can record a one-minute video in five minutes…but editing that same video could take five times longer.

Sure, you could keep it simple and post your raw clip, but if you want your content to stand out, good editing makes a huge difference.

And this isn’t just me talking.
Every single client I’ve worked with says the same thing: editing is the part they hate, and the part that holds them back.

So if you’re just getting into content creation and you can find a way to skip the editing yourself, do it.

Your future self will thank you.

Sometimes when I get a request for proposal, I have an opportunity to do some original marketing by just following my gut…doing what I feel is right, not what is expected or what the corporate world says is okay.

Then I have the thought that if I do what I feel is right and it's completely different to every other proposal that was submitted and it stands out, the people who are assessing the proposal and awarding the contract won’t be ready for something like that. They may be impressed by the idea, they may even think it's brilliant but they will NEVER choose it.

WHY?
Because it’s risky.
Because it’s illogical.
Because they have to justify the choice.

Every Chief Marketing Officer answers to someone. Sometimes it’s the CFO sometimes it’s the CEO sometimes both.

I get it.

I imagine how I would feel if I had to explain to my boss, why I chose this completely off the rails marketing proposal instead of one these far less creative but fairly logical (and possibly cheaper) ones that say things like “We are committed to delivering a holistic, future-proof solution that leverages cross-functional synergies for maximum stakeholder alignment.”

Anyway.

One of these days I'll submit a bombastically weird and creatively unhinged proposal just to see what happens.

And to all the CMOs, CFOs and CEOs reading this: beware, that proposal might be coming to you.

As AI becomes more of a thing I'm really leaning into Behavioural Science. Understanding humans is going to become increasingly important as we give much of our thinking over to machines.
