Things that the digital world doesn’t say out loud but love to talk in person about.

The real surprise was how naturally the online conversations blended into the in-person ones. 

You talk to someone for months digitally, then finally meet them and it feels like you’re just picking up a thread, not starting a new one. 

Happened a few times and it felt good.

Shoutout to Juan, and the whole Martech World Forum team for making it a solid couple of days.

New 𝗖𝗠𝗢𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗱 to piss off half the company and get fired along the way...

One of the fastest ways to shorten your tenure as a CMO is to jump into projects that are subjective, highly political, and hard to measure. I see this mistake all the time. 

A new marketing leader comes in and immediately declares, “The messaging isn’t working, we need a full reset.” They hire consultants, start the rebranding process, and try to drive alignment across multiple teams right out of the gate, thinking that a bold move will earn buy-in and set the tone.

It almost never works. Messaging and positioning are cross-functional outputs that touch sales, product, customer success, and even the executive team. Everyone has an opinion. There is rarely clean data. 

When you make messaging your first battle, you end up fighting on too many fronts before you even know who your allies are.

If you want to survive and actually build real impact, the smarter play is to come in, identify low-hanging fruit, and use those early wins to build trust and alliances across the company. Get a clear read on what different teams care about. 

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 the priorities of others before trying to overhaul something as core and as political as messaging.

If you are a 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗖𝗠𝗢 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 within six to eight months, take on messaging as your first initiative. 

But if you want to make 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, start by picking measurable, high-impact projects that solve real problems for your peers. Build relationships and credibility first. 

Once you have internal momentum and support, you can go after the bigger, more complex changes like messaging and positioning. 

That is how you actually move the needle and keep your seat at the table.

It blows my mind how 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗳𝗳 and then never look at it again.

The more marketing I see, the more I am convinced most teams 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩. 

My team and I have just launched a few new campaigns, and one thing we are making non-negotiable is constant testing and direct feedback. 

We want to know, in real time, what is working, what is falling flat, and why. We are applying this process everywhere we can, and it is becoming part of our operating rhythm.

You have to treat marketing campaigns like products, not one-off projects. Campaigns are not just things you push out and forget. They need to be tested, iterated, and improved based on audience feedback. When you start thinking this way, every launch is a beta test. You put the work out, you listen, you learn, and you keep tuning it until it resonates.

It does not matter how much AI you are using or how fast you can ship new creative. If you are not getting real-world feedback, you are just automating mediocrity. AI can help you move faster, but if the core message is not landing, it will just amplify your misses. On the other hand, if you treat every campaign as a living product and relentlessly seek out feedback, you will improve your instincts, your training data, and your results.

If you want your marketing to actually work, stop launching and hoping. Start beta testing your campaigns, get closer to your audience, and make learning your default. 

The teams who make this shift are the ones that will keep winning, no matter how fast the marketing landscape changes.

I have a hat problem. Not a cute one. Hats everywhere,  in places they shouldn’t be.

My wife could’ve shut it down.

Instead, she leaned in and somehow turned the whole thing into wall art. Like she literally took my chaos and made it look intentional.

She didn’t try to “fix” the habit. She just made it work.

That’s the part I’m grateful for. Someone who sees the annoying thing you do, doesn’t make it a fight, and finds a way to turn it into something better.

The truth? CMOs aren’t held back by budgets or AI. 

They’re held back by fear. Fear of taking big bets

Nearly every conversation I have circles back to the same insight: the era of optimizing one channel at a time is over.

The market is saturated. Every team is running the same playbook, tweaking channels and looking for marginal gains, but the returns are flat. 

What’s missing is the willingness to take bigger, smarter bets.

This is creating a massive opening for leaders willing to think differently. If you want to stand out, stop worrying about squeezing another percentage point out of a well-worn channel. The opportunity is to identify the big moves, the bold initiatives that drive real value for your customers and build lasting brand trust. 

Playing it safe is what everyone else is doing. That is why the biggest growth, and the strongest brand associations, are going to the companies that are willing to make the right big bets.

Here is what I am recommending to my team and to others in my network. Sit down and ask: what are the high-impact bets that truly solve customer pain points, deliver unexpected value, and reinforce that our brand is the one to trust? Big bets do not mean reckless gambles. 

They are rooted in understanding your customers better than anyone else. Spend real time learning your customers’ daily pains, the problems in their workflows, and the points where your solution can make a difference. Focus on education, on enabling your audience to see you as a trusted partner who actually gets their world.

As you head into planning season for 2026,  it’s time to break out of the old cycle. Identify what you need to keep the lights on. But then challenge your team to raise the stakes. 

Where can you experiment, push boundaries, and deliver something that no one else in your space is even trying? That is how you build a brand that people trust and remember.

The easiest way to see if your AI is actually valuable, try charging for it.

Interest was sky high. Usage numbers were through the roof. 

But as soon as we introduced a payment structure for the AI agent, the enthusiasm vanished. Suddenly, the feedback stopped, and usage dropped off. 

This is a direct quote from a company I advise that is building AI products and introducing them to the enterprise market. The truth is, this story is playing out across the industry. AI generates initial excitement, but that interest often evaporates as soon as there is a price tag attached.

What does this mean for marketing leaders? It is a clear signal that innovation and excitement will get people in the door, but if customers do not understand the concrete value your AI product delivers, they will not pay for it. AI is a powerful attention-getter, and it can create a valuable halo effect for your brand. But unless you translate that interest into actual pipeline and revenue, you do not have a business. You just have hype.

This is why positioning is everything. You need to be crystal clear on the value your product delivers, not just the features or the technology. 

Are you solving a real problem? 
Are you making someone’s job easier, faster, or less expensive? 
Are you able to prove it in a way that your buyers cannot ignore?

As a marketing leader, you have to make a distinction between the buzz and the business. Track usage, but focus on conversion. Make sure your team understands that high usage without revenue is just noise. 

It is your job, together with the rest of the executive team, to go back to those accounts, re-engage them, and use better positioning and messaging to move them further down the funnel.

If you want real growth, focus on the hard part, which is converting interest into paying customers. 

Build your brand with AI, but make sure you are also building a business.
