What aren't we talking about enough in AI right now?

Career ladders are done.

The next era of careers won't be driven by how well someone executes a task. It will be driven by AI leverage.

The folks winning with agentic AI? 

They've stopped thinking about task execution. They're designing and orchestrating the SYSTEMS of execution.

That shift — from doing the work to architecting how work gets done — is the unlock.

This is THE dialogue we need to be having at #WEF26. 

Not just "are we doing AI" but "are we fundamentally redesigning how work happens."

The companies not succeeding with AI transformation might be rewarding the wrong leaders.

We've spent decades promoting people who manage complexity. 

The bigger the org chart, the larger the budget, the more layers they oversee — the higher they climb.

That entire playbook is backwards now.

What I shared in a powerful conversation yesterday at the World Economic Forum with Shelley Zalis, Ruba Borno, Becca Coggins, and Kate Jensen:

The leadership challenge isn't managing complexity anymore. It's eliminating it.

Can you rethink every major process with a lens of gross simplicity? 

How automated can you make this? 

How augmented? 

If we keep incentivizing leaders to BUILD complexity instead of REMOVE it, we'll never get the transformation we need.

I shared our own story. At WRITER, the speed of disruption IS the disruption. The underlying models change so fundamentally that what we productize on top has to keep pace. If you're still executing on an idea from 3 quarters ago, well, you won't be working at an AI company.

And some version of that speed has to come to the enterprise, too. 

You have to move people along fast, even if they don't all agree yet.

In the past year, enterprises have gained incredible leverage to spin up customized solutions that drive their business to value faster. With agents, building software got 10,000x easier.

So what are the big swings you’re going to take NOW that are going to redefine your business a year from now? 

Raise the ceiling on the ambition of your people. This moment is uncomfortable. But discomfort is where transformation lives.

2026 will bring a brutal leadership reckoning. 

Most C-suite leaders still aren’t getting ANY agentic AI done in the enterprise.

Not because the technology isn’t ready (it is) but because leadership hasn’t caught up. AI is moving at warp speed but the playbook at the top has barely moved at all.

The first generation of AI leaders already had its sink-or-swim moment. But three years in, the era of learning as you go is over. 

If you’re not moving to production-grade, BUSINESS-REDEFINING systems now, you’re not just behind. You’re at real risk of never catching up. The window is closing FAST.

And here's the quiet shift, the real game-changer:

Companies are now realizing they have to go 3 or 4 levels deep into their organizations to find the leaders who will actually drive the agentic enterprise revolution. 

We’re talking about the unsung heroes in operations, marketing, GTM – the ones inside the workflows, living with the friction every single day. 

Close enough to the work to know what has to be rebuilt, not “AI-enabled.” 

This is the year we’ll see a new class of leaders emerge. 

These aren't the folks content to just patch over your broken, 20-year-old processes with AI. They’re the ones ripping out organizational muscle memory altogether.

They’re redesigning operations for human-agent collaboration by default: re-architecting how decisions get made, how work flows, and how careers are shaped in an agentic world.

I spend a lot of time thinking and writing about what leaders need to do to get agentic done in the enterprise. 

But last week, the stakes became so much clearer. 

I had the honor of participating in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Parity Sprint, where I sat with global leaders for a conversation on how we can accelerate gender parity — which, at current pace, would otherwise take more than a century to achieve. 

I believe AI is how we’ll get there. It’s a once-in-a-generation chance to make work more HUMAN, to widen who gets to contribute and advance in the world. 

But only if we’re deliberate. 

Because, for women, the early data doesn't yet look great.

Based on data and analysis by LinkedIn and the World Economic Forum, roles held by women are disproportionately landing in the AI DISRUPTED bucket (57% vs 43%) while men are more likely to get AI AUGMENTED (46% vs 54%). 

If leaders move intentionally – if we tap into the FULL talent pool, if you ensure NO ONE is left behind in the enterprise redesign around AI, if we are cognizant around who is reaching for AI and who needs extra encouragement – we have the chance to rebuild economies where progress raises the ceiling on human ambition for EVERYONE.
