My best mate just surprised me in Cape Town.

Two days before Matt booked his flight, I told him I was feeling lonely for the first time since being here.

I didn't make a big deal of it. Just one of those honest chats you have with someone you trust.

Two days later he was at my door.

Four days in Cape Town. We worked together in the mornings, I introduced him to the business friends I've made out here, we went on a hike with a founders group, went kayaking.

It was exactly what I needed.

And it reminded me of something I genuinely believe.

You can build the most systemised, location-independent business in the world.

But none of it means much without the right people around you.

I might be 6,000 miles from home.

But I'm not alone.

I forgot I was fun.

Genuinely. 

Somewhere between building three businesses and becoming "the systems guy", I lost track of the bloke who was always the first one to suggest something stupid and the last one to leave.

8 weeks in Cape Town and the first thing I did was build my work routine.

Classic.

But last week I finally gave myself permission to just... go. 

Cape of Good Hope. Cape Point. Penguins at Boulders Beach. Baboons on the roadside. Sea lions. Ostriches. A sunset cruise. Quadbiking. Kayaking. 

Even...A techno club (still not my vibe, but I went).

Small things. Materialistic even. But they reminded me of something important.

I'm actually a fun person.

I know that sounds mad to say out loud. 

People who know me would probably laugh reading this - I'm apparently the comedian of most groups. But when you're deep in the pressure cooker of everything you've built, fun is the first thing to go quiet.

And I want to be honest - this trip wasn't all scenic drives. Stomach bug for four weeks. Mosquito bites like hives. Real loneliness. A situation back home that knocked me for a week. 

What a way to start your 30s.

But here's what I learnt.

The steam had to release before the calm could come. And once it did, I didn't just feel clearer about business.

I remembered I actually like myself.

When did you last do something just because it was fun?

I'm writing this from Cape Town.

But this post isn't really about Cape Town.

It's about a conversation I had with a client last week who told me his version of freedom is being home every single day when their kid finish school.

Not travelling the world.
Not working from a beach.

Just. Being. Present.

That hit me.

Because that's exactly why I do what I do.

Freedom isn't a location. It's not a laptop on a sunbed or a passport full of stamps.

→ For some founders it's school pick-up every day
→ For others it's building something that outlasts them
→ For some it's simply a weekend that actually feels like a weekend
The systems I build with clients aren't about creating my lifestyle.

They're about creating yours.

Whatever that looks like.

Seven weeks in. Three businesses running. One big question answered.

Did I actually build businesses — or did I build a sophisticated job I just happen to do from nicer locations?

Here's what the numbers look like:
→ TUGA client work delivered on time, every week
→ Roundtable community ticking along without me micromanaging

The systems held.

Not perfectly. There were moments that needed my attention. A decision here, a conversation there. 

But that's the point — moments, not days.

The version of me from three years ago would have had to cancel this entire trip.

That's not me bragging about Cape Town.

That's me telling you that the work you put into your operations now is what buys you options later.

Both came to me within the same week.

On paper? Identical businesses.
In reality? Completely different problems.

Founder one had a delivery problem. 

Work was coming in but the team had no clarity on process. 
Every project felt like starting from scratch. 

Clients were noticing.

Founder two had a founder dependency problem. The business was running — but only because she was involved in every single decision. 

She hadn't taken a proper day off in eight months.

Same revenue. Same headcount. Completely different bottlenecks.

This is why I never make assumptions before process mapping.

That's not it.

→ Genuine conversations about what people are building
→ Remembering details they share
→ Following up because you're actually interested
→ Connecting people who should know each other

I met someone in Cape Town two weeks ago. They mentioned struggling with team delegation.

That's networking.

I've built three businesses entirely through relationships. Zero cold marketing. No ads. Just genuine connections with people over 7+ years.

Not because I'm "naturally charming" - although, that is what my mum says.

But because I treat people like humans, not leads.

The best networkers aren't the ones working the room. They're the ones people remember months later because they actually gave a shit about the conversation.

You don't need more connections. You need better relationships with the connections you have.
