Everyone told STEM students the big lie:

In reality?

The new system isn’t about degrees (even though they have good benefits for those who wish to stay in academia).

 It’s about leveraging your skills to facilitate change in the industry. 

Most people don’t need a new degree.

They need to redefine their paths.

Let's be honest:
"Just apply more."
"Tailor your resume."
"Use the right keywords."

This advice fails because it assumes the market is fair.

But the real world is messy.

It's not about playing harder.

So what does that actually look like?

1. Build visibility before you need it
Post about your work. Share insights from projects. Comment on industry trends. When opportunities arise, you want decision-makers already familiar with your name.

2. Access the hidden market
80% of roles never see a job board. Reach out to people doing the work you want. Ask about their challenges. Offer value first. Relationships unlock doors that applications can't.

3. Create your own proof
Can't get experience without a job? Build it anyway. Side projects. Spec work. Case studies. Show, don't tell. Make hiring you the obvious choice.

4. Stop waiting for permission
The people who win aren't always the most qualified. They're the ones who showed up, added value, and made it impossible to ignore them.

The system isn't fair.

But you're not helpless.

As a Clinical Research Associate, I am responsible for analyzing and managing multiple imaging modalities for cardiovascular clinical trials. In this role I perform imaging analysis utilizing OCT, IVUS, MRI, and CT imaging technologies to identify and collect nuanced clinical trial data to improve health outcomes for individuals with cardiovascular disease. In this role I deliver quality imaging data that meets GCP standards and enter data into clinical trials databases.

Clinical Research Associate

As a Clinical Research Associate, I was responsible for coordinating and overseeing the execution of studies and clinical trials. In this role I was responsible for performing site monitoring visits in accordance within my scope of practice as well as regulatory requirements such as ICH-GCP. I also worked with sites to adapt, drive, and track subject recruitment, administer protocol and related study training to assigned sites and manage the progress of the clinical trial as well as maintain the eTMF. In this role I focused on cardiology, diabetes, and neuroscience trials for both phase two and three trials.

As a clinical trials assistant I was responsible for the execution and maintenance of clinical trials data while also coordinating with Clinical Research Associates to ensure all data collected meets regulatory and audit standards. In this role I was responsible for taking meeting minutes, maintaining and updating databases, and coordinating with the CRA’s to ensure we met study targets and milestones. I focused primarily on Neuroscience and COVID studies while also learning the tasks necessary to ensure correct and thorough data was collected and maintained across multiple studies.

As a patient coordinator I was responsible for being the first contact for patients seeking care. I was tasked with care coordination, organizing patient visits, collecting payment, insurance verification, referral management, and some direct patient care tasks such as collecting vitals and assisting with drug testing. I was also responsible for reporting to the providers and managing their schedules as well as collecting the necessary patient info to coordinate their visit.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

As a social/clinical research specialist I was responsible for coordinating family visits, conducting family visits, and managing data for the Baby Connectome Project. In this role I learned informed consent, care coordination, and administration of behavioral assessments within a pediatric population. Along with this I also learned administrative tasks necessary to facilitate the patient’s care as well as coordinating data collection and analysis for a major NIH funded project.

Social/Clinical Research Specialist

As a behavioral health advocate, I was responsible for reliable and personalized patient interaction. In this role I developed practical clinical skills where I learned how to take vitals, perform chart checks, and conduct regular patient rounds. Along with this I served as direct support for the nursing staff and doctors where I helped with their assessments, notes, and paperwork. This included being the liaison between patients and their providers within a behavioral health hospital to advocate for evidence-based treatment.

Behavioral Health Advocate/Mental Health Technician

As a production lab associate I was responsible for the direct execution and operation of the established standard operating procedures for building oligonucleotides. This included the preparation, synthesis, processing, and qualitative and quantitative data analysis of DNA, RNA, and CRISPR oligonucleotides. In this role I learned HPLC, PAGE, seppak, LC/MS, and UPLC analysis. I also practiced best laboratory procedures and proper chemical waste management.

Production Laboratory Associate

Florida State University

Collected data on various projects using animal models of ingestive behavior, specifically in the activity-based anorexia paradigm and the binge eating paradigm. We tested whether novel CB1r specific-agonists produced greater behavioral-specific effects relative to non-specific agonists. My thesis focused on whether intraperitoneal injections of exogenous endocannabinoids, specifically THC and AM11101, attenuated the weight loss associated with activity-based anorexia as measured through body weight loss, food consumption, fat pad weight, and running wheel activity. This research focused on preclinical models to evaluate efficacy and viability of novel treatments for potential translation into human studies.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Advised by Dr. Xie Ma, I maintained the teaching laboratories used for the organic chemistry course. This included preparation of solid and liquid samples, prepared IR and NMR spectroscopy for scanning and prepared TLC papers for experiments. Additionally, I assisted teaching assistants through instruction of the procedures of teaching experiments and lab etiquette. Lastly, I practiced proper chemical waste management following experiments.
