Like a (much less fit) sales version of Bodhi from Point Break (the 1991 version, of course), I am a modern savage and searcher in the quest for the ultimate sales ride…the perfect sales call…the perfect sales narrative…the perfect pitch. 

Along this path, I believe in lending a hand and guiding others from their self-imposed shackles of identifying as mere “sales tourists” to instead reaching liberation and happiness by focusing on the true craft and science of sales. 

My mistakes have been numerous on this sales and leadership journey and I love sharing all of my many missteps. 

But like a modern version of Forrest Gump, the successes I have tripped over have been numerous as well – from founding and helping early stage technology companies from the kitchen table to bringing them to IPO or strategic acquisitions totaling over $625MM, I’ve also helped pitch and raise nearly $130MM in venture and Reg A capital. I’ve interviewed, hired, and coached thousands of incredible sales, support, and leadership folks under my watch. I cherish the awesome moments of working with our team members and celebrating the marriages, the new babies, the new homes, the travels around the world, the goal boards “checked off,” and the countless promotions; it is truly one of my favorite pastimes.

I strive to lead from the front with a humility and drive for delivering both an exceptional client experience and shareholder value…a drive that is powered without the latest fad of low nutritional value “Hustle Porn” that has pervaded our profession these past few years. Rather, the leadership style I subscribe to is better aligned with General George Patton’s axiom of, “A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”

I used to think “change” was something you scheduled.

New quarter. New comp plan. New KPIs. New haircut. New goals. 

Then Coach Sam Falsafi from warriorweek.com dropped into Branch 49 for two days and reminded us that REAL change usually starts when God corners you in a storm that you didn’t quite plan for.

Coach Sam put a big, fat, loud exclamation mark on our Kickoff 2026 week. Our   theme, "Invictus Maneo: Rooted in Strength," had him unpacking a simple word: Shahnah (change)...not the Michael Scott motivational poster version, but the kind that REALLY forces you to answer questions like:
 - Where am I lying to myself?
 - Where am I lying to the people who trust me?
 - Where am I pretending most with God?

Coach Sam walked us through Acts 27 and the kind of leadership it takes to ride out a brutal storm, staying "on mission" even when everything around you  screams “turn back.” 

That led to another hard truth and a different angle on weakness:
"If you can’t lead with your weaknesses, you’ll lead from your lies!"

So...we made a decision as a team: no more “winging” our mornings. We launched a simple, old‑school Warrior Power Hour:
1) Read something spiritual, or simply sit in silence and...listen.
2) Write what you heard, or what you’re actually afraid of today.
3) Drink something that doesn’t hate your body (water, greens, protein)
4) Move your body on purpose.
5) Deposit some love (post it, a text, a simple card) into someone else’s account.

BUT...in Warrior language it reads a bit more primitively:
1) Read some $hit.
2) Write some $hit.
3) Drink some $hit.
4) Move some $hit.
5) Deposit some $hit.

Do your "Core 4" before the inbox. No excuses.

We also doubled down on something we’ve believed at Branch49 since day one: proximity is a weapon. It's contagious. It's why we believe in the power of an office. The power of being arms-reach away from everyone. Our “walk and talks” with the team aren’t about steps on an Apple Watch; they’re about creating a bridge where your personal life and business life can actually meet...and where active listening happens, and where an attitude becomes contagious in the right direction.

And in case anyone needed a reminder that God plays the long game, Sam brought us back to Daniel 6. God didn’t keep Daniel out of the lions’ den. He met him IN it.

So...sometimes the clearest sign you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be is that He doesn’t yank you out of the detour...He sits in it WITH you.
THAT's the kind of faith and grit and service we want on our team. THAT is what it means to be Rooted in Strength. And THAT IS Branch49.

Drop 35 salespeople in Phoenix with no phones, wallets, or IDs, and exactly 3 hours to come back with as much cash as possible.

We called it “The Money Game.”

During Kickoff Week at Branch 49, Coach Sam Falsafi challenged our five teams with this exact scenario. 

Each team had one car (meaning 3 people walked) and a 10-mile radius around GCU's Canyon Ventures to figure it out.

The goal wasn't a quick buck. It was a live-fire exercise straight from the Market Dominance Guys that forced everyone to quickly figure out their Strategy, Target, List, and Message.

At Branch49, we preach that a cold call is simply taking a stranger on a journey: from Fear to Trust, Trust to Curiosity, and Curiosity to Commitment. 

When you approach a stranger with empty pockets, their default emotion is fear. To get to "the money," you must front-load your message with trust.

The strategies the teams used were fascinating: knocking on doors, washing cars at gas stations, flipping early dollars into inventory, and visiting the everyday businesses that we support all week.

One team started on street corners outside a Circle K to A/B test messaging. When they honed the winning screenplay, they scaled to a busier QuikTrip to pitch over 40 busy folks, then moved upmarket to businesses like car dealerships and auto repair.

The winning screenplay used the exact structure we use on the phones—embracing the friction of the interruption: "Um... excuse me, I KNOW I'm an interruption... do you mind if I ask an uncomfortable question?"

Once the "stranger" agreed to listen, the team had 27 seconds to frame the ask and "invite them" into our mission and our cause.

The result?

In 3 hours, our team armed with zero resources - only matching shirts, some timid smiles, and a face-melter screenplay - collected $20,924.70!

They didn't get there by expecting a handout. As Townsend Wardlaw taught us earlier, EXPECTATIONS live in your head... they are lazy.

Instead, they did the hard work of creating AGREEMENTS. They looked strangers in the eye, stated their mission, and made a direct, mutual ask.

The craziest learning? Almost everyone said YES. 

People pumping gas, students on scooters, barbers, sushi shop owners, sandwich shop managers, and even drivers stopped at lights and literally emptied their pockets and cash registers to support the team.

Why? Humans are wired for connection. We learned that if you tell an authentic story, people truly want to be a part of it.

As one team member summarized: "You are only one ask away from whatever it is you want."

So...if your outbound team is struggling, the market isn't dead. Perhaps the team is afraid of the ask, or they don't quite know how to craft an authentic story that earns the right to connect and move towards action.

During our Kickoff Week at Branch 49, we’ve been living in the reality of Market Dominance: 
 - Coach Sam Falsafi’s “Money Game” (see our previous post) proved trust has to be built fast, in real life, with real friction.
 - And Townsend Wardlaw reminded us that expectations are LAZY; agreements are EARNED.

The reality is that you can't "whiteboard" your way out of call reluctance. You just need someone to occasionally grab you by the face-mask, bark out a play, and slap you on the butt as you trot out into the friction...the beautiful friction. 

So, who better to tell brutal truths about the friction in our craft than the “Cold Call Celt” himself, Tony Brophy...who was another of our top-tier guest keynote speakers from last week. 

​Tony joined us live to share the unvarnished reality of building his agency AND the parts everyone tries to avoid.

As you'll hear, his best "nugget" was also his “weakness”

Three rock solid takeaways we’re carrying forward from Tony (and tying directly into what both Coach Sam + Townsend drilled into us):
 - Drop the ego; take the shots. Complaining about the list doesn’t change the outcome...activity does.​
 - The trust transfer matters. Tony still uses a permission-based intro (“you’re not expecting my call…”) because it disarms fear and earns the next few seconds.​
 - Consistency beats charisma....everytime! The “unsexy” reps who show up daily win, on the street, on the phones, and on LinkedIn.​

Tony proves you don’t need more tools to win. You simply need the "3 o'clock in the morning" type of courage to embrace the friction...and the discipline to honor your agreements with your work.

There is a quiet, corrosive, invisible tax dragging down almost every sales floor in the country. It isn’t the economy, the comp plan, or the tech stack.

It’s Unmet Expectations.

During our '26 Kickoff Week at Branch 49, the Maestro of Mindset himself, Townsend Wardlaw, dropped in to do a masterclass and began by using a scene from Star Wars which we all remember: Obi-Wan confidently waves his hand and tells some stormtroopers, “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” And they then just move on.

It wasn't manipulation; it was the power of a word so aligned, so whole, that it shaped reality.

Townsend called it Integrity.

He defined it as the structural degree to which something is whole and complete. So if a gold bar says 24K but it’s only gold-plated, it isn’t "evil"...it is simply just out of integrity.

At Branch49, our Top of Funnel Team lives and dies by our "Show Rate." When a prospect agrees to a meeting but "no shows," we usually blame their busy schedule or kick ourselves for not confirming.

But Townsend challenged us to look in the mirror: Was there a whole and complete Agreement even made, or just a lazy Expectation?

Expectations are sloppy. They live entirely in our head. They are assumed and informal. ("I expect them to show up because they said yes.")

BUT...Agreements require real work. They are explicit. They demand we introduce a little friction to lock down three critical things:
1) The Action: Not just the outcome.
2) The Timestamp: Because "soon" is where integrity goes to die.
3) The Renegotiation Plan: The maturity to ask, “If this time no longer works, are you ok agreeing to nail something down by X date.”

AND...instead of the worst question in sales, "Does that make sense?", create an agreement by asking, "Pete, uh...just so we are on the same sheet of music, can I ask what is your understanding of what we just agreed to?"

AND...instead of assuming someone is bought-in, maybe say: “Sean...can I ask an uncomfortable question?...uh...are you making this agreement with me because you actually can commit to attending our chat...or um...is it just because you feel like you have to say 'yes' to me to get me off the phone?”

Because when you lead (or sell) with mere "Expectations," you are leading with resentment waiting to happen. You’re pouring concrete for a high-rise but mixing it with sawdust. It may stand today, but will collapse under stress on a random Tuesday.

A real agreement requires mutual buy-in. If they can't explicitly tell you what they are doing, when it will be done, and how they will let you know if things change, you don't have an agreement. You have a leaky integrity system.

We agreed to simply upgrade the material we are building with. And move from a culture of EXPECTING to a culture of AGREEING. Because when the agreement is whole, the "show" is inevitable.
