Last week, I:

Last week, I mostly did strategy and ideation work. 

4 ideas for a client in the B2B space along with thumbnail inspirations (only made rough sketches). 

Made 2 script outlines for Movavi.

The first task took about 3-4 days (so I broke the deal and worked a lil on the weekend too).

(I mean, who was I kidding?)

Overall, a busy and somewhat productive week. 

A lot of writing work awaits me now!

✨Diary of a freelancer: Week 1✨

I’m starting fresh with these weekly breakdowns for 2026 with a completely new goal.

In 2024, I pivoted from content writing to scriptwriting and wrote for creators like: AI Guy, Ethan Garland, Zab Twins, and more. 

In 2025, I took a step further and did a lot of strategy and packaging work along with scripting. 

And in 2026, I aim to get even better at both but there’s SO MUCH I still need to learn and test. 

So I’ll be sharing the progress (and failures) every week. 

Last week was a slow one. 

No major tasks…so I re-watched George Blackman’s scriptwriting course, reviewed a client video on Frame, and saved some thumbnail inspirations. 

I had put a pause on cold outreach for the holidays so I’ll get back up on that as well. 

Onwards and upwards :)

One creator I religiously follow on YouTube is: Kane Kallaway.

The reason isn’t just the marketing, psychology, or virality hacks he drops, but how well he scripts his own videos. 

You don’t have to see his channel analytics to know his retention rate must be really high.

He uses open loops so naturally, and smartly that viewers can’t tell they’ve been hooked again. 

They just keep watching.

On average, his videos have around 10-12 open loops but some of them are just subtle re-directions that end up making a huge impact. 

Here are 15 types of open loops / mini re-hooks he uses in almost every video. 

➡️ 1. Finite List Promise

He tells you exactly how many things / sections are coming but he often blurs the list to make the audience curious. 

This removes assumptions. People know what’s coming but not exactly. 

➡️ 2. Stakes Before Delivery

He explains ‘why’ this matters before he explains ‘how’.
“If you fix this, your views will skyrocket.”
This creates a FOMO for the viewer. 

➡️ 3. “We’ll Get There” Statements

Phrases like:

- “Before I show you…”
- “This will make sense in a second…”

These phrases again hook the viewer to see what’s coming next

The reason I believe these work so well is because none of these feel like tricks.

They:

- respect the viewer’s intelligence
- feel conversational
- stack naturally

That’s why people don’t realize they’re being re-hooked.

Open loop ideas for YouTube scripts

You need three types of videos on your YouTube channel.

one: answer search questions.
two: show your process.
three: share your case studies.

Why?

the first type helps you get discovered by the right audience.
the second helps you build credibility and removes assumptions.
the third helps to share proof that you’ve actually done this for people.


All three together help your prospects make a decision.

If you want to nail the first 30 seconds of any video, do this:


1. Visual hook

Words can never grab attention as fast as visuals. So the first 1-10 seconds need good animations that pair up with your words. 

Moving elements on screen, a visual map—anything that hold attention until you’re done with your spoken hook. 

1. Spoken hook

Visuals can only do so much if your words don’t hold enough power to make the viewer feel something. 

In 30-40 seconds your intro should:

- explain what the video is about (often reaffirm the title)
- state why it’s so important (without saying why it’s so imp)
- tell them what you will cover (list the 3-4 main talking points)
- add one quick credibility line (to show you know your stuff)
- and open a curiosity loop that should either:
   - hit a problem they relate to
   - or challenge a belief they currently have

(so they will stick around until you close the loop and buys you another 2-3 minutes to lock them in)

A quick hack to improve retention of your videos is to add mini re-hooks in every section. 

We already know the first 30 seconds are really important and that’s when viewers decide whether they’ll stay till the end or drop off. 

But with attention spans this low, the hook alone isn’t enough. 

So we need to re-hook them in every section and the best way to do that is use curiosity gaps.

A creator who does it really well is Kane Kallaway. 

He would introduce a new concept mid section and naturally, the viewer get curious to know. By the time he explains that, he talks about a common mistake they’re making which hooks them again. 

Examples: 

1. Keep this in mind, because in a minute I’ll show you why this tiny detail changes everything.

2. Before you apply this, there’s one mistake you’re probably making right now, and I’ll explain that in the next step.

3. Now, here’s where people mess this up, and the fix is surprisingly simple. But to understand that, we need one more piece…

4. Most teams stop here, and that’s why they don’t see results. Here are three quick ways to fix that.

5. Here’s the part that usually goes wrong, and the reason might surprise you. 

So be strategic with your re-hooks and I promise it makes the biggest difference!
