I started as a legal assistant and worked my way up through the “law firm ranks”. I know how a law firm runs day to day. When you hire me as your fCFO I bring my financial expertise and my law firm operational experience to our meetings. 

I love working with law firms because they are unique in the small business world. Revenue can be a roller coaster and expenses are unique to law firms.

I trained sales leaders for years, but realized that the brains were already in the room; they needed a community, not another consultant.  With a structure in place, and in a small, private group with facilitated discussion, they could do that.

Leaders' Forum provides leaders of sales orgs - all from different companies, none competitive with each other - a small group of peers (no more than 9 in a forum) who provide feedback, community, and shared learnings. This is done in monthly meetings with a tight focus.  

Leaders' Forum exists to give sales leaders the same experience CEOs, presidents and owners get in similar peer groups, with education, accountability, focused discussion, and community, all outside their company.

I was recruited by the President to lead and grow sales following a private equity acquisition in 2017.  While there, I had the good fortune to witness high levels of leadership from the president, SVP of Product and Marketing, and CFO; to see great, clear thinking from the product team; and to get a crash course in pushing for growth in a 20 year-old business. 

I made many mistakes with regard to leading and managing people, as well as setting expectations. There is no shortage of things I'd do differently.

 It was an incredible learning experience, however. First, about people who have new management come in. Second about strategy and the need to say "no," to options. Third, about building a simple but effective sales engine with a budget. Fourth, about alternative means of reaching potential customers through readily available resources. Finally, about the transferable nature of principles, skills, and tactics across industries.

At Market Sense, we had the pleasure of working with some of the best small and mid-sized businesses in the Austin, Texas area. 

We provided sales and sales management training, as well as consulting on everything from compensation to sales hiring to accountability. 

Some of the most fun we had was hearing a client call and say, "Remember that opportunity we discussed last week? I did what we talked about, and it worked. Signed PO!" 

Several of our clients made Austin's Fast 50, others made Inc. 5000, and several owners successfully exited their businesses through a sale.

Along the way, Karl Scheible and I wrote, "Succeed The Sandler Way," chronicling the success stories of many of our clients. Jim Comer was indispensable in our efforts to put that together.

I started out by cold calling exclusively on CEOs, company presidents and owners. It was a rough go for a while, but Karl Scheible stuck with me and coached me through it. Eventually he allowed me to begin training the professionals who attended our programs, and coaching the salespeople who were looking to apply the tools we gave them.

I had the chance to work with Beck Brydon and his staff for 8 years. These were some of the richest of my career. Our staff improved every year, and our ability to serve our kids by putting them in better positions to succeed, did, as well. 

In my time there, we evolved from a traditional Slant 50 to a drawn-in-the-dirt 3-3 to three other variations of a 3-3 before evolving back to a 4 and 5 man fronts. 

We had a great run, making the playoffs every year, even as competition increased when we moved to higher levels. We were the runner-up in two state title games, and the year I took off, they won it all. No one  was rude enough to mention that they won it all when I was not there full time.

I taught 9th grade English to a bunch of great kids. I probably made the biggest impact by emphasizing how to write by treating everything like an argument, as one of my favorite professors at Rhodes taught me. 

I coached varsity football on an incredibly talented staff. That staff laid the foundation for the 5 consecutive state championships LT won. We worked 100 hours per week in the season, and 70 per week on the off-season. 

The JV soccer team allowed me to show up and "coach" their games. It was a blast.
