Completed a 3-day workshop with a regional team of colleagues from the 🇦🇪 UAE, 🇪🇬 Egypt, and 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia. 

Including professionals from Engineering, Sales, Service, and Support, all in customer-facing roles handling complex conversations in different ways.

This session was about communicating better when conversations become challenging.

We spent time working on:

One insight that surfaced repeatedly in the room:
👉 Conversations don’t break down because people lack expertise.
They break down when 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.

When teams slow down, listen more intentionally, and guide conversations with purpose, trust builds naturally, even in tough situations.

I’ve just completed my 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 (𝗦𝗦𝗜) 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿 training. 

What stood out for me wasn’t the assessment itself, but what it revealed about selling behaviour. 

Over the years, I’ve trained and coached many capable sales professionals. 
Most know the frameworks. 
Most understand the process. 

Yet when pressure shows up — tough objections, stalled deals, aggressive targets — behaviour changes. 
→ Some push harder. 
→ Some avoid the conversation. 
→ Some second-guess themselves. 

#SSI helped me make sense of patterns I’ve been seeing for years in sales conversations: how a salesperson’s natural disposition and motivation influence their sales approach, especially under #stress. 

What I appreciate about this tool is that it’s not about labelling people or telling them how to sell. 

It’s about creating a clearer mirror — so sales professionals can understand why certain situations feel harder for them, and where their real development leverage lies. 

As a coach and trainer, this gives me a much stronger starting point for conversations: 
→ not guessing, 
→ not assuming, 
→ but guiding development based on how someone naturally operates.

My daughter asked me this one night while I was packing for work.

I paused.
.
To a child, “selling” sounds like taking something from someone.
It sounds pushy. Transactional.

I told her,
“No. I help people solve problems they don’t know how to solve yet.”

That answer wasn’t just for her.
It’s the same shift many salespeople struggle to make.

When selling feels uncomfortable, it’s often because we think we’re convincing.
.
When selling feels right, it’s because we’re helping.
.
Looking back over the years, the best sellers I’ve met weren’t the loudest.
They were the clearest.
.
In 2026, my focus is simple:

The 5 Buyer Decision Styles

𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀.

Either:
• from turbulence → calm
• or from calm → turbulence

Every business, in one way or another, exists to move customers from one state to another.

A cybersecurity provider, for example, 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀.
Imagine a bank without strong security — constant anxiety, disruption, and risk.

On the other hand, a theme park like Disneyland creates value by doing the opposite.
It 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗷𝗼𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 into otherwise ordinary routines.

Different businesses.
Same principle.

Value is created when a meaningful transformation occurs.

𝘘: 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘧:
A) Reducing turbulence and creating calm
B) Introducing positive turbulence and new possibilities

Once you’re clear on that,
selling becomes less about features, and more about the change you help customers experience.

That’s one way 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.

Sales Training Programme to guide you sell better

𝗜𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

I’ll be honest.

There were periods in my sales career where I felt invisible.
No one noticed the late hours I worked
or the extra miles I put in.

Not my boss.
Not my customers.

At least, that’s what I thought.

What I didn’t realise was this:
𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗿.

They noticed how I showed up.
How I handled problems.
How I gave them peace of mind when things weren’t smooth.

They didn’t say anything at the time.

But when the timing was right, opportunities appeared.
→ Referrals.
→ New roles.
Unexpected messages that started with,
“You’re always very helpful.”

That’s when it clicked.

Real personal branding isn’t built on a screen,
posting polished photos and videos.

It’s built in moments when people need you.
Not by being loud.
But by being reliable.

This page comes from my notebook while I was going through a behavioural assessment certification (#SSI) I recently completed.

The assessment identifies different 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: a salesperson’s natural preferences, talents, and tendencies in selling, as they naturally show up in sales conversations.

Some people are naturally more:
• Consultative
• Assertive
• Relationship-driven
• Analytical
• Or structured in how they sell

None of these is right or wrong.

Problems arise when:
– We sell against our natural tendencies
– Or we don’t understand why certain situations feel harder than others

What SSI does well is this:
👉 It gives salespeople a mirror.

Instead of asking:
“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴?”

A better question is:
“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦?”

➡ I’m still integrating this learning into my coaching and training work,
but I’m already seeing how it creates much richer conversations with sales professionals.

Sales Dispositions Behavioral Traits

After sitting in a few sales conversations this week, one pattern keeps repeating.

The difference between average sellers and strong sellers under pressure:
→ isn’t confidence.
→ It isn’t experience.
→ It isn’t even skills.

It’s this:
👉 Strong sellers slow the conversation down.

When buyers push for discounts, hesitate, or go quiet,
average sellers react fast.
→ They explain more.
→ They justify harder.
→ They talk themselves into corners.

Strong sellers do the opposite.
→ They pause.
→ They ask one good question.
→ They create space for the buyer to think.

Because pressure doesn’t need more words.
It needs #clarity.

If you’re leading or coaching a sales team, this is often the real work:
→ not teaching people what to say
→ but helping them learn when to slow down.

You don’t sell better by pushing harder.
You sell better by thinking more clearly.

Recently, I was in a sales discussion where someone said,
.
“We followed up so many times… but the deal still stalled.”
.
That moment felt familiar.
.
Most stalled deals aren’t stuck because sellers didn’t try hard enough.
They’re stuck because the 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆.

What I often see is this:
❌ The customer understands the product
❌ The customer understands the price
❌ But the customer is unsure about the outcome
.
When clarity drops, hesitation rises.
.
Looking back, the teams that sell better don’t chase harder.
They slow down and fix three things:
✅ The problem they are really solving
✅ The impact of not solving it
✅ The path forward
.
That’s not a motivation issue.
That’s a conversation issue.
.
Fix the conversation, and confidence returns.
.
That’s how teams sell better.

Most sales teams think deals are lost because of price.

Stepping out of daily noise gives perspective.

After working with sales teams across different countries and industries, one thing has become very clear to me.

Top-performing sellers don’t look the same;
but they behave in surprisingly similar ways.

No matter whether they’re selling:
cars, engineering solutions, financial products, or services,
these traits keep showing up.

• They are 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿-𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱, not just friendly, but curious about real needs
• They 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 instead of improvising every conversation
• They know when to 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲, without being pushy
• They 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 and don’t let urgency replace priorities
• They 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲, not objections to fight
• And most importantly, they 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 into conversations

→ Different markets.
→ Different products.
⭐️ Same principles.

Selling changes with context.
But strong selling behaviours travel well.
