When I was 8, I had a dog. His name was Brutus. One day, I came home from school to find that my mom sent him away to be with Jesus. After 25 years, my trauma ended when we adopted our dog, Sadie, from the shelter. One year later, Sadie was joined by Andy. After 15 years, they're both gone. But my love for them remains. I was called in to "see what I could do."

The real accelerator of AI isn’t technology. It’s people.

I’m in Paris this week for APIDays, one of the most influential API conferences in the world. Later today, Sergi and I will be running our workshop on AI-enabled Product Management—and I’m genuinely excited.

But what struck me most didn’t happen on a stage.

A few days ago, Heather Xiao messaged me to grab dinner. What started as a simple plan turned into a small orchestra of friends and colleagues joining in—each person adding their own instrument, their own energy, their own story.

And that’s when it hit me:

Last night we harvested friendship, good vibes, and the kind of conversations you remember.

During dinner, we reached an unexpected conclusion:

👉 In a time dominated by AI hype, with CEOs pushing for short-term returns and company cultures struggling to adapt overnight...the greatest accelerator of AI is still human connection.👈

Not models. Not frameworks. Not platforms.

PEOPLE

Because trust speeds up adoption.

Curiosity fuels experimentation.

And shared purpose unlocks the courage to transform.

Networking is about building the relationships that make innovation possible.

And yesterday in Paris, I was reminded—once again—that no algorithm can replace that.

Reflections from the Horizon Deep Tech Summit: Why AI Governance Is Becoming the Backbone of Trustworthy AI 👇 👇 👇 

Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining an inspiring roundtable on AI & Ethics. It was a rich, forward-looking conversation about what it really takes to build AI systems society can trust.

From the vantage point of a Chief AI Officer, here are some of the ideas I shared during the session:

1️⃣ Ethical AI: turning principles into practice
Talking about ethics is easy. Operationalizing it is the real challenge.

Ethical AI means embedding human values, rights, and societal expectations directly into how we design, develop, and deploy AI systems.

And this is only achievable when companies implement clear governance frameworks with defined roles, accountability, and controls throughout the AI lifecycle.

2️⃣ Tackling bias and ensuring fairness
Bias isn’t just a technical issue. In fact, it’s a business risk and a societal risk.

Organizations need ongoing mechanisms to detect and mitigate bias:
- Data and model audits
- Structured impact assessments
- Human oversight where decisions affect people directly

AI Governance is what makes these practices repeatable, scalable, and measurable.

3️⃣ Transparency & accountability: building trust by design
Transparency is about explaining decisions in a way that users, regulators, and internal teams can understand.
Accountability requires:
- Standardized documentation (model cards, data sheets)
- Versioning and traceability
- Clear decision-making ownership

Without governance, accountability is impossible.

4️⃣ Regulation & global standards
Europe is pushing the frontier with regulation, but the real opportunity lies in aligning innovation with responsibility. 

Regulation tells us what needs to be protected; internal governance tells us how to achieve it.

Going forward, the winning organizations will be the ones able to navigate both worlds fluently.

5️⃣ Education: shaping the next generation of AI leaders

Technical skills alone won’t be enough.

Universities must prepare professionals who understand the interplay between technology, ethics, law, business, and risk. 

AI Literacy in AI Governance will soon be as essential as coding.

6️⃣ AI for Good: scaling positive impact
AI has an enormous potential for good, but we only unlock that potential when people trust the systems behind it.

Trust that’s earned through robust governance, transparency, and fairness.

🤔 My final thought
Trustworthy AI doesn’t emerge from algorithms alone. 

It appears from the structures, culture, and governance that guide how organizations build and use those algorithms.

AI Governance isn’t a constraint; it’s the foundation that will allow AI to scale safely, responsibl,y and confidently.

🌍 It’s Time to Level Up AI Governance

I’m seeing the same pattern across organizations of all sizes: AI adoption is accelerating, but AI governance maturity isn’t keeping pace. And when you operate across different regions, this gap becomes even more visible and more risky.

The Norton Rose Fulbright’s report "AI Regulation: Global Guide" cuts through the noise and provides a clear, jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction view of what’s already in force and what’s coming next. For anyone building or scaling AI responsibly, this is required reading.

Let me share a few takeaways that resonated with me:

🔍 A quick summary of the report
The guide maps out how AI is being regulated today through:
▶️ AI-specific legislation (like the EU AI Act now in effect)
▶️ Existing privacy and data protection laws (GDPR, PDPA, PIPEDA, POPIA…)
▶️ Sector-specific expectations in finance, healthcare, employment, and consumer protection
▶️ Soft-law frameworks in some countries, which often move faster than actual regulation

AI regulation is already shaping how products are built, deployed, and governed.

🌐 Why AI Governance is essential for global organizations

▶️ Different definitions of “high-risk”
▶️ Different expectations around transparency, explainability, and oversight
▶️ Different enforcement environments (some still light-touch, others handing out significant penalties)
▶️ Different cultural and ethical approaches to AI

In this context, AI Governance, although it's perceived as bureaucracy, it’s an enabler for scaling AI responsibly and consistently across your organization.

Good governance helps you:

1️⃣ Reduce friction between teams

2️⃣ Accelerate approvals

3️⃣ Anticipate compliance obligations before they become blockers

4️⃣ Build trust with both customers and regulators

5️⃣ Protect brand, users, and long-term value

🌍 Practical tips to navigate global AI regulation
✔ Build a full inventory of AI systems (internal, vendor, shadow AI… everything).
✔ Tier your AI systems by risk.
✔ Embed privacy-by-design and fairness-by-design into development workflows.
✔ Operationalize human oversight, especially where decisions affect people.
✔ Conduct assessments consistently, not reactively.
✔ Create a cross-functional governance council to accelerate decisions and reduce ambiguity.

Este fin de semana me examiné para ser árbitro de Touch (nivel 1) por la FIT.

Sí, ya puedo llevar silbato...aunque prometo usarlo solo en contextos profesionales cuando alguien diga "implementemos IA sin gobierno que no hace falta" 😅

De todo el curso, hubo un principio que me encantó el énfasis del reglamento en que la misión fundamental del árbitro es velar por la seguridad de los jugadores y ser ejemplo de comportamiento ético y responsable.

Y claro… eso me hizo pensar:

¿ser árbitro me ayudará en mi rol como Chief AI Officer?

No, no me he vuelto majareta...o no más de lo habitual.

1️⃣ Visión periférica
- Árbitro: ver el balón, la línea, las manos rápidas y el que viene de atrás como un cohete.
- CAIO: ver negocio, datos, riesgos, compliance y oportunidades antes de que nadie más las huela.
➡ Ambos necesitan anticiparse o… alguien acaba en el suelo.

2️⃣ Imparcialidad total
- Árbitro: aplica el reglamento igual para todos, incluso si te mira mal el ala izquierda.
- Líder de IA: evitar favoritismos tecnológicos (“todo con GPT”, “todo con Google”, “todo con magia”) y tomar decisiones basadas en evidencia.
➡ Neutralidad = credibilidad.

3️⃣ Comunicación clarita y sin dramas
- Árbitro: gestos simples, voz firme, cero telenovela.
- CAIO: explicar IA a negocio, negocio a tecnología y tecnología a legal sin que nadie llore por el camino.
 ➡ Traducir mundos: superpoder compartido.

4️⃣ Gestión de conflictos en caliente
- Árbitro: dos equipos convencidos de que tienen razón… simultáneamente.
- CAIO: departamentos, expectativas, miedos y hype del tamaño de un tsunami.
➡ Calma, criterio y saber cuándo pitar “reset”.

5️⃣ Ética por encima de todo
- Árbitro: proteger a los jugadores.
- Líder de IA: proteger a la organización, a los usuarios y al futuro.
➡ Sin ética, no hay juego. Ni en el campo ni en la IA.

🧭 Conclusión que nadie pidió, pero que voy a soltar igualmente
Si algo me ha enseñado este curso es que arbitrar y liderar IA tienen más en común de lo que parece: ambos buscan orden, seguridad, juego limpio y progreso.

Y oye...si alguna vez tengo que pitar golpe de castigo en una reunión por "uso irresponsable de IA", que sepáis que ahora estoy acreditado 😎

As someone who works every day at the intersection of AI governance, business strategy, and responsible adoption, I’m always looking for resources that cut through the noise and help leaders make better, safer, more sustainable decisions about AI.

4️⃣ AI Safety, Alignment, and Ethics are not interchangeable
Clarity creates coherence, and coherence creates trust.

💥 In my work, confusion around these terms often leads to duplicated efforts
gaps in controls and misaligned stakeholder expectations.

5️⃣ Community-centred AI is inevitable
The report makes this clear: AI is only legitimate when it reflects the people it serves.

For organisations, this means adopting governance models that:

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak at this global event organized by Heighten Science Publications Inc., where I presented:

🔥 Delivering Responsible AI through Technical Safeguards and Ethical Frameworks 🔥

In my session, I explored how we can build AI systems that are not only powerful but also principled: systems that embed fairness, transparency, accountability, compliance, and human-centric oversight throughout their lifecycle.

Here are some of the key insights on building trustworthy AI that I emphasized during the talk:

1️⃣ Trustworthy AI requires aligning organizational structures, responsibilities, and processes is as important as model performance. This is what governance is about.

2️⃣ Transparency and explainability are essential for trust, enabling users, auditors, and regulators to understand and challenge AI decisions.

3️⃣  Fairness must be continuously measured and monitored, as bias can arise from data, algorithms, or user interactions.

4️⃣ Accountability must be explicit — every AI system needs clear ownership, traceability, and mechanisms to correct errors.

5️⃣  Compliance is becoming non-negotiable, with global regulations like the AI Act, GDPR, and sector-specific frameworks shaping how AI must be developed and deployed.

6️⃣  A Responsible AI Governance Framework helps organizations scale AI responsibly while ensuring safety, reusability, and alignment with ethical principles.

These discussions are more important than ever as AI continues to shape critical decisions, services, and societal outcomes.

That’s why I’ve joined International WoMenX In Business For Ethical AI (IWIB4AI) as Global CTO, to help foster exactly these kinds of conversations and drive responsible, human-centric AI forward.

I’m so confident about this that I’ll prove it. It has been. a long way but:

2️⃣ Understanding is essential. That's why I decided to improve my Data Science skills.
3️⃣ I come from real API engineering, and I’m certified there too, both as an architect and a developer.
4️⃣ I’ve been talking about governance long before it became fashionable
5️⃣ I don’t sell hype. I build reality.

Today isn’t about promises.

It’s about credentials, experience, and execution.

It’s about what actually works when the slides are over.

Competitive advantage is about governing AI, feeding it right, and integrating it properly.

That’s where AI becomes business.
