I still regret not trusting myself earlier in my career.

Let me explain...

I’ve been writing my whole life.

Not in the ‘fell out of the womb clutching a Moleskine’ kind of way — just in the obsessive, all-consuming, borderline embarrassing kind of way.

Poems. Fan fiction. Blog posts I still pray never resurface. Song lyrics. Letters to my parents, my best friend, and yes… the Queen. (She replied).

But when it came time to choose a career, I didn’t call myself a writer.

I called myself an advertising exec.
Then a digital marketer.
Then a social media strategist.
Eventually, a copy & contentwriter — but only in lowercase and only if someone asked directly.

Because somewhere along the way, I absorbed a story that shaped everything: 
Writing wasn’t real work.
It wasn’t safe.
It wasn’t serious.
It wasn’t something you could trust with your future.

I was scared of being the “starving artist”
Scared of being too soft. Too much. Too honest.
Scared that if I actually told the truth — about what I saw, what I felt, what I believed — people would stop listening.

So I built an entire career writing every single day, while hiding behind more "acceptable" titles.

And I didn’t even realise I was doing it.

Because that’s how self-censorship works.
It’s quiet. Familiar. It sounds like professionalism.
It looks like strategy.

And yet it leaves you disconnected from the very thing that makes your work powerful: your voice.

Most people that think they have a copy problem actually have a truth problem.

They’ve been told to write for the algorithm, not for their audience

I'm writing a book. 

Getting to the point where I could say that out loud took longer than it should have.

Earlier this week, I had everything ready to go. Newsletter, email, this post. All I had to do was hit send.

I closed my laptop and went to bed instead.

I've done this before. Got to the edge of saying something real and pulled back. Not because I didn't believe it, but because saying it out loud makes it real. And real things can fail in ways that ideas in your head can't.

So I did what any normal person does when they're avoiding a decision. 

I doom scrolled.

And the TikTok gods, who are clearly paying attention to my inner narrative, served me a psychologist (British accent, so obviously more credible) who asked me something I couldn't shake.

The question: If a miracle happened tonight while you were sleeping and your main problem was solved, what's the first small sign when you wake up that something is different?

I picked up my notes app. The first sign? Those fears just don't exist. I open the laptop, hit send, and I feel free.

So today, I thought F*ck it. I'm posting it.

The working title is Off Script.

It starts with a reckoning. The fear of a career collapsing overnight isn't abstract for me. I watched it happen to my father when I was five, and I spent twenty years pushing that feeling underground while I did what I was told. The corporate ladder was a contract, and most people feel it breaking before they can name it. 

The reviews, the development conversations, the feedback that felt so personal. All of it was designed to produce a version of you that was useful to the organisation, and when the organisation no longer needed that version, it moved on without a second thought.

The second part is about what's being built to replace it. While most people are still trying to make the old model work, organisations are quietly assembling something different. Permanent headcount shrinking, project-based teams formed around specific outcomes then disbanded, skills and track records valued over tenure and loyalty. 

I call it the Hollywood Model of Work. Not because it's glamorous, but because the structure maps perfectly. Talent cast for what they can actually deliver, careers built on a body of work rather than a title that evaporates the moment someone else's org chart changes.

The third part is the playbook. How to position yourself inside this shift, build income streams that are actually yours, and design something sustainable rather than just replicating the burnout in a different container. Built on real case studies with people you'll actually recognise, not the CEO who left with a golden parachute and called it a leap of faith, but the ones with a mortgage, a school run, and ageing parents who figured it out anyway.

More as it takes shape.
