I have a confession. I was wrong. 👀

After 20 years of avoiding them, I finally got a Macbook.

You were right.
I was wrong.

Everything feels faster, easier, and smoother than on Windows.

It kind of pains me to admit it.

Next I am thinking about getting an iPod.

Software engineers invented AI for one sole purpose:

To do front end development.

Software engineer’s current worst nightmare:

The CEO watched their friends “build an app in a weekend” with AI.
Now every roadmap item is “Why can’t this be done today?”

“Two weeks” is now interpreted as “two prompts.”

A Claude Code monkey is not much better than a code monkey.

We keep arguing about AI replacing engineers as if typing code was ever the job. 

It wasn’t!!! 

Typing has always been the easiest and cheapest part of software development.

A code monkey executes instructions without understanding the problem, the tradeoffs, or the consequences. A Claude-powered code monkey does the same thing faster, but speed without direction doesn’t help.

What actually matters is product thinking.

Understanding what needs to be built and why. Seeing the whole system, not just the ticket. Knowing when to push back, when to simplify, and when the right answer is not to build at all.

For engineers with judgment, context, and ownership, AI is a power tool. It collapses the distance between intent and execution. It lets you explore ideas, test assumptions, and ship the right thing dramatically faster.

That’s where tools like Claude Code actually change the game.

For engineers without that context, nothing fundamental changes.

They’re not moving faster in the right direction. They’re just turning sketchy requirements into half-baked features quicker.

They can’t fill in the gaps with judgment or context.

AI didn’t create a talent gap. It exposed the thinking gap.

Teams that treated engineers like code monkeys will now get slightly better monkeys waiting for directions. 

You just became the bottleneck faster.

Teams that invested in product thinking and ownership just gave their best people 10x leverage.

Same tools. Very different outcomes.

The difference is talent, leadership, and ownership.

Software engineering is fun... again.

When I started my career, I could prototype stuff in VB6 really rapidly. 

Talk to customers, hack some code together, deliver the solution, and have a beer to celebrate.

For the last 15 years, something else happened.

Mobile, cloud, SPAs, and a million new frameworks made our lives really complicated.

We spent more time learning tools and building tooling than actually solving real customer problems.

AI has changed that... for the good.

So much of the code writing can happen more quickly now.
Less tedious code.
Less need to be an expert in so many frameworks and tools.

How do you do X in JavaScript?
Who cares. Claude knows.

I'm writing React code and I've never done React in my life. (p.s. JavaScript sucks)

Now we can focus on the fun part!!!

Talking to customers and users, understanding their problems, and seeing the smile on their face when you make a difference in their lives.

Software engineering is back and it has never been more fun!!! 🎉

The craft of software is dying.
And uncomfortable as it is to admit, it probably needed to.

For a long time, software engineering became too internally focused.
We engineered for ourselves.

We optimized for elegance, abstractions, patterns, and architecture debates that mostly impressed other engineers.
Meanwhile, the customer slowly disappeared from the center of the work.

That’s how engineering drifted into becoming too much of a craft.

And let me be clear:
There’s nothing wrong with craftsmanship.
Some people genuinely love the craft, and that’s a good thing.

But craft is only valuable when it’s in service of something external.
The user.
The customer.
The outcome.

When the work is designed primarily to satisfy the builder, not the person using it, the product suffers.
And eventually, so does the business.

We didn’t lose our way because we cared too much.
We lost our way because we cared about the wrong audience.

The next era of software won’t reward code that feels beautiful to engineers but invisible to customers.
It will reward teams who can use their skill, judgment, and taste in service of real problems.

Craft isn’t dead.
It’s just being put back where it belongs.

Do you pay software engineers more because they have a master’s degree?

What about certifications?

I don’t.

Credentials don’t move compensation for me.

They tell me you studied, memorized material, and passed a test. That’s fine. It just isn’t the thing customers pay us for.

What matters is what you can do with what you know.

Can you apply that knowledge to solve messy, ambiguous problems?
Can you make good decisions when the requirements are incomplete?
Can you take ownership of outcomes, not just tasks?
Can you raise the bar for the people around you?

That’s what increases your value. That’s what increases your pay.

Which leads to the real question we should be debating:

What do you think a software engineer actually needs to do to make more money?

I've never seen so much absolutely beautiful software.

None of it actually works.

But it looks Lovable.

Like someone needs to adopt it, and fix it.

Users want dependable software, not Lovable software.

AI is making software engineering easier AND much harder.

Yes, writing code is easier than ever.

But the day-to-day life of software engineers, and the leaders responsible for them, has gotten more complex.

Here’s why.

Everyone is suddenly expected to be an AI expert.
Output expectations are rising. Timelines are shrinking. The baseline quietly moved.

Some of us love this. We’re early adopters. We’re experimenting constantly. It feels like being a kid in a candy store.

For everyone else?

Their job changed overnight.

They’re being told to stop writing as much code.
To stop doing the part of the job they’re best at... and often why they became engineers in the first place.

Instead, they’re expected to “work with agents.”
Systems that move fast, sound confident, and require constant supervision to keep from going off the rails.

At the same time, engineers are being asked to do more of everything else.

More product thinking.
More context switching.
More code review.
More responsibility for code spewed out by AI that they aren't experts at.

They’re not just learning AI.
They’re absorbing the parts of the job that used to sit around them.

Product. Planning. Testing. Deployments. Risk.

The scope of what it means to be a “software engineer” just expanded... without a pause to catch up.

AI didn’t just change how code gets written.
It changed the what's expected of engineers.

So what do we do?

Give your team empathy. The career they signed up for changed... fast.

Give them training. Give them space. Keep challenging them.

I've never met a good engineer who didn't love a good challenge.

Just make sure they're set up to meet it.

As humans, we often overvalue the things we don’t know how to do...

And undervalue the things we already know how to do because they seem easy.

That’s why so many of us aren’t happy.

We lose sight of the amazing things we can already do.

And if you have ADHD like me, you get bored, crave novelty, and chase the next challenge.

Sometimes that curiosity is a gift.
Sometimes it feels like a curse.

Most engineering leaders don’t fail with offshore software engineers because of talent.

They fail because they hire task executors, which just creates more work for them, not less.

What leaders really need is people they can trust to own projects and get things off their plate.

Here’s what I hear on almost every call with leaders trying offshore dev:

“They need approval for every decision.”
“I still had to do all the architectural thinking.”
“They delivered what we asked for… it just wasn’t great.”

That’s not a people problem.

It’s a role clarity and leadership problem.

If you don’t clearly define:

• What technical decisions someone owns
• What outcomes they’re accountable for
• How success is measured beyond “code shipped”

You won’t get leverage. You’ll get people who need to be micromanaged.

The leaders that struggle don’t lack access to good engineers. They lack a system that turns engineers into owners instead of dependency points.

AI has fundamentally changed how websites get built.

What used to be fumbling around in website builders just to ship a basic marketing site is gone.

Tools like Lovable are honestly mind-boggling. And it’s clear this is just the beginning.

Website design has crossed a line it won’t come back from.

Some people will argue AI isn’t the "best" at design or graphics. I actually agree.

But I don’t need best. I need "great enough" and easy.

And that’s what most people actually need too.

"This field is done for."

I keep seeing this every day.

There's a big difference between writing code and knowing why you're writing that code.

The people who don't know why they're writing the code, they might be done for. 

The people with this alarmist attitude are wearing me out though.

At Full Scale, we are hiring multiple software engineers this month. 

This field isn't done for. It's changing.

You are interviewing a software engineer and they have never used Claude Code.

What do you do?

Disqualify them?

Ask about their curiosity of new tech?

Or give them your agentic training plan?

You want to hire a Claude code guru that can produce mountains of code every day.

But that isn’t actually what you want.

The limitation of building software has never been how fast you can write code.

What you want is someone who understands business problems and software architecture and can use code to solve those problems.

Mindlessly creating mountains of code doesn’t solve anything.

The limiting factor of software engineering has always been product vision and organizational friction.

Writing code faster doesn’t fix that.

Instead, you have to build a team that has empathy for users, understands their problems, and has been given real ownership to go solve them.

Then, and only then, with Claude, they can move mountains.

Today’s entry-level engineers might be better than yesterday’s senior engineers.

Old dogs don’t like learning new tricks.
We’re stubborn.
We’re set in our ways.

Fresh grads are different.

They’re hungry.
They’re curious.
They’re not trying to protect an identity built around “how we’ve always done it.”

They’re growing up in a world where agentic AI tools are just... normal.
They won’t remember a time when writing every line of code by hand was the badge of honor.
They’re learning early that product thinking actually matters if the software is going to succeed.

While many senior engineers are being asked to unlearn parts of their craft and trust AI to help write code, these new engineers are simply starting there.

That’s not a weakness.
That’s an advantage.

I’ve lived this myself.

I avoided React from the moment it came out.
Not because it was bad, but because I hated frontend work and JavaScript with a passion. (I survived IE6 25 years ago)
Meanwhile, a whole generation of entry-level developers started with React. No baggage. No bias. No resentment.

They didn’t have to give anything up to learn it.
They just learned it.

I’m old enough now to admit I’m from a different era.
I’ve learned not to discount the engineers being born into this new AI-first world.

Some of these fresh grads are going to be far better at using modern tools than many experienced engineers who refuse to adapt. (We see this firsthand with our interns and fresh grads at Full Scale!)

Experience still matters.
Judgment still matters.

But adaptability matters more than tenure stuck in the old ways!

And the engineers who grow up fluent in AI, product thinking, and modern tooling are going to move very fast.

Old dogs can learn new tricks.
But the pups are starting the race way closer to the finish line.

AI is not intelligent.
I just asked it to edit a basic CSV file and simply add https:// to each line in the 800 line file. 

Claude Code "thought" about it for a few minutes trying different ways with PowerShell to do the change. 

Did it eventually figure out how to do it?

Yes.

But it looked really stupid the entire time, fumbling through it.

Just like we would.

Building software is about 20% a technical problem and 80% a people problem.

Building software is hard.
Getting people to agree on what to build is harder.

Most of the real work is not writing code.

It is talking to people. 

Helping them understand what their problems actually are. Turning vague ideas and half-formed complaints into something concrete.

Getting your company or your boss to agree to your “crazy idea” can feel impossible. Not because it is wrong, but because alignment is harder than execution.

Writing the code has always been the easiest part.

Now with AI, that is even more obvious.

I personally need to build a new internal utility right now. Claude could probably write most of it in a day. That part is not hard.

The hard part is stopping long enough to think clearly about what needs to be built. Articulating the requirements. Deciding if it is even worth building in the first place.

I have ideas bouncing around in my head, but no clean answers. And even if I build it, I am not sure I will actually use it. It might be a waste of time. It might solve the wrong problem. Buying a third-party tool might be the better move.

That uncertainty is the real 80%.

Heck, it might be 95% at most big companies.

And that is what people miss.

The 80% is the meetings.
The conversations.
The back-and-forth to make sure we are building the right thing and that we actually get value out of it.

As engineers, we like to treat that part as overhead. Something in the way of the real work.

It is not.

That is the work.

Because if you skip the 80%, the 20% will not matter, no matter how good the code is.
