Higher Education Consultant

Swansea University

Assisted the University over the period of transition between my leaving Swansea and my replacement starting.

Responsibilities:
• Provided leadership to the Admissions Office and Compliance Teams, including providing advice and guidance on complex legal and regulatory issues
• Oversaw the development of a suite of new statistical Management Information reports, including planning and strategy reports for Clearing
• Managed several ongoing transformational projects to ensure they did not lose momentum, such as the launch of a new fully paperless application and admissions system for postgraduate applicants

Responsibilities:
• Head of Swansea’s Admissions function, including Communications and UKVI Compliance teams
• Managed a team of 50 staff and multi-million pound budgets
• Shaping the University’s Recruitment and Admissions Strategy by membership of executive level Boards and Committees
• Oversight of all aspects of Swansea’s Clearing recruitment, resulting in Swansea’s clearing recruitment being within the top 10 in the UK since 2017
• Oversight of the development of Management Information and insights tools and reports


Achievements
• Chaired the cross-University Recruitment and Admissions leadership group which resulted in a step change in strategy and processes and saw Swansea’s enrolments doubling in size over a 5 year period 
• Developed an extensive and detailed knowledge and understanding of Higher Education, admissions policies, processes, external environment, regulatory changes, UKVI Compliance etc
• Awarded the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award (THELMA) for Outstanding Student Admissions Team in 2014 recognising my coordination of the project to improve student recruitment, which led to a 25% increase in applications over 2 consecutive years
• Campaigned for, and oversaw the introduction of, the University’s first CRM system for Recruitment and Admissions, which is now being rolled out across the institution
• Transformed the institution’s Admissions function, including centralising undergraduate and postgraduate taught admissions
• Introduced a centralised conversion communications strategy and team of advisers
• Co-chaired the UCAS Welsh Standing Group, representing the interests of HE, FE  and Schools in Wales
• Led the University’s response to the Consumer and Markets Authority advice on consumer law obligations for students

I have over 25 years’ experience in Higher Education with more than 15 of those as a Head of Admissions, leading Swansea University through a period of unprecedented growth. In 2014 I received the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Award for Outstanding Student Admissions Team.  I have a detailed knowledge of Higher Education and a consistent track-record in leadership and in delivering strategic and operational-level change and major improvements in business performance.  

My strengths as a consultant have been built from a combination of extensive senior leadership; expertise in HE admissions policy and compliance frameworks; an in-depth knowledge of student recruitment and admissions practices and strategy; detailed understanding of Management Information and data insights; and an ability to apply this experience and knowledge at a strategic and operational level to achieve results.
