I have over 20 years experience in the field of web design and user experience (UX) with 100s of websites under my belt.

You'll see me talking at events such as The Marketing Meetup, or hear me on podcasts advocating for a human-centred, user-first approach to web design, and sharing our SmartSite™ methodology which has helped generate £1m's for our clients.

I'm here to help you (marketing and business leaders of £2m+ B2B, non-profit, retail & saas companies), and make your lives easier. We do this by:

- Providing training and coaching to empower your team to find opportunities in your existing website,

🧠 It's no secret we use behavioural science as our weapon of choice. After initially working alongside UCL (University College London) to corroborate our hypothesis, we then developed the SmartSite™ methodology, which harnesses behavioural science. This has subsequently accelerated the success of every website and organisation we've applied it to.

I worked for Empower (previously Montfort) on a freelance basis. I helped set up and optimise Facebook advertising campaigns, report on performance, manage scheduling of social media content, and work on social media audits and strategies for their clients.

Montfort's clients include both national and global organisations, non-for-profits and charities.

Freelance Social Media and Content Marketer

Sussex Police

I developed the organisation's use of digital communications and social media. Including a major audit and recommendations for change to ensure an innovative and appropriate approach for the future. Ensuring that use of digital channels directly support and contribute to achieving organisational objectives and benefit operational policing.

The force's main Facebook and Twitter accounts now reach on average 6.4 million people a month and engage with 5K a month.

In my first quarter I increased social media traffic to Sussex Police’s website by 360% and engagement in Facebook by 900% with zero budget. 

Introduced a new social media management platform, training users of different abilities and disciplines, including the development of best practice. 

Set strategy and guidance for use of social media across this 5,000 employee organisation.

Provide regular advice to senior officers and over 300 other social media users. 

Took responsibility for the digital and social engagement during the Shoreham Aircrash major incident. This work was shortlisted for a national CIPR award and won the force the Gold South of England CIPR PRide Award in crisis communications.

Introduced Snapchat in 2016. The force's use continues to develop, with national press and local acclaim. Importantly the force has engaged with new members of the community and even had serious crimes reported through the app.

Transformed the way we use social media to engage with and appeal to locate missing people locally, including the targeted use of Facebook and Instagram advertising.

Manage the organisation's paid social, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Provide advice and innovative ideas to colleagues with regard to digital engagement for marketing campaigns, including advice on correct channels for reaching targeted audiences.

Identifying and managing risks to reputation on social media.

Digital Communications Manager

As the East Sussex Divisional Communications Manager I was charged with delivering strategic and tactical communications support and advice to the county's Senior Management Team. Building external campaigns and events and internal change communications within East Sussex.

Delivered communications aligned to business objectives to prevent and solve crime, encourage behaviour change, build public confidence and enhance the reputation of the force. 

Managed the internal and external communications for the politically and reputation sensitive closure of a police station and relocation of policing teams.

Worked closely with Public Engagement officers, professionally overseeing their work and ensuring that work relates to district and divisional objectives which in turn helped to deliver organisational business objectives.

Worked with key stakeholders and partnership agencies to deliver shared objectives and identify key risks and opportunities providing advice and support identifying appropriate actions.

Developed Sussex wide service level agreements between Neighbourhood Watch, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Chief Constable. A politically challenging negotiation.

Divisional Communications Manager (Account Manager)

As one of the first Public Engagement Officers for Sussex Police I acted as an online community manager and a local copywriter producing both digital and print materials.

My core role was to drive standards of public engagement across Rother District through a wide range of community engagement and communication activities, working closely with the Divisional Communications Manager, and within organisational, divisional and local communication and engagement strategies and priorities.

Created an engagement plan which was adopted as organisational best practice.

Developed local social media channels building engagement and relationships.

Developed engagement plans for the districts annual operation for the safety of Camber beach, which attracts over 30,000 people during the summer.

Developed an engaging blog as a police officer serving in Bexhill during World War Two, using an original police notebook for source material. A well received publication that was also printed and engaged a range of audiences .

Public Engagement Officer (Community Manager)

Patrolling a designated area dealing with low-level nuisance and anti-social behaviour, forging links with the public and businesses. Providing reliable support to frontline police, helping to reduce crime and reduce the fear of crime. I had the authority to remove vehicles and issue fixed penalty tickets, and to conduct other duties that do not require the powers of a police officer, such as directing traffic and guarding crime scenes.

It was during this role that I discovered my passion for public engagement, becoming one of the first front-line police staff members to utlise Twitter to build relationships and engage with the public.

Police Community Support Officer

Gwent Police

I was part of a national team of police communicators chosen to work with Gwent Police, Wales to manage NATO's Policing and Security communications at the NATO Summit in Cardiff. This included internal, external, partner and media communications, press releases and social media.

This meant dealing with the press and PR teams of world leaders, Government and every UK police force involved, as well as national and international news outlets.

The team's work was highly praised throughout the communications community, with the Twitter account, which was set up in my team, and the use of social media, lead by me and my colleagues, being highly commended by industry (Police Oracle) and national media.

Eating disorders create isolation - but community, however big or small, can be life-changing. 💜

Today marks the start of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and once again, we’re proud to be supporting Beat in sharing their message far and wide.

This year’s focus is on community. Whether someone is living with an eating disorder or standing beside someone who is, isolation is often part of the experience. And connection, in all its forms, can be part of recovery.

Since we began working with Beat in 2022, we’ve learnt so much. About how complex eating disorders are. And about how vital it is that nobody has to navigate that journey alone.

Beat’s work - from helplines to peer support to resources for loved ones - exists to make sure that when someone reaches out, there is someone there.

This year’s campaign video is a powerful reminder of how community can give someone strength.

Is LinkedIn feeling harder than it used to?

Follower growth is down. Impressions are down. Reach feels inconsistent. Charlie Hills 🦩recently shared data referencing Richard van der Blom’s analysis of 1.8M+ posts showing exactly that. But engagement is up. 

In my opinion, the platform is not broken. It's just refining.

In the first two months of this year, three people reached out to me about potential work. Not from ads. Not from cold outreach. From consistent posting and clear positioning on LinkedIn. That is not vanity metrics. That is pipeline.

The shift is simple.
Expertise over virality.
Depth over noise.

LinkedIn is aligning your content with your stated authority more tightly than ever. In his Forbes article, Chris Donnelly recently reported on its internal evolution, and the message is clear - Stay in your lane. Go deeper on your expertise. Write posts worth saving, not just liking.

Reach is nice. Engagement is useful. Relevance drives revenue.
