I was hired to lead the Content Marketing function but nearly got the sack after spending my time designing pretty slides instead of getting leads. Once I got my sh*t together, we grew SEO traffic 10x from ~20k to ~200k/month and first-touch sign-ups from 0 to ~1k/month. We also launched a fun little podcast called 'The Humans Strike Back.'

I then moved on to Product Marketing and repositioned Hotjar from 'all-in-one analytics & feedback' to 'behavior analytics,' making it the complement to traditional web analytics. We ran multiple experiments to test the new positioning, generating big uplifts in accounts created (mainly from the homepage).

My proudest project was the launch of the Hotjar Lightning Talks. Most virtual events are super boring, sales-y, and loOoOong. So, we took a risk and did something different. A 5-day virtual event for ecommerce folks, with 5 talks a day, but 5 minutes (!!!) each. Thousands of people registered. It was really fun to go against the grain on this one.

This sounds like a contradiction but,

you  can build authentic authority with AI.

AI almost feels synonymous to “fake”.

And most of the time, it is.

Yet, I’m increasing finding that it’s possible to be authentic while using it.

Let’s me share two personal examples.

I’m using it to write a book right now. Ken Freire and I cohosted nearly two dozen podcasts strategically to have Claude convert it into book chapters.

I’m merely asking Claude to do the work of a ghost writer and smooth out the transcript into a working chapter.

The chapters are surprisingly good. It's completely authentic to what was said without adding anything more, though it certainly strategically left some pieces out or clipped pieces from different parts of the conversation together. 

It’s authentic AI. 

I’ve also used ChatGPT and Suno recently to put together a personal album for my wife. I went back through a number of meaningful events in the first year of our relationship, told chatGPT the stories, had it write the lyrics, and had Suno make the music.

Is it the same as me writing and recording it myself? No.

Did it make her cry and laugh as we relived that season of our lives together? Yes. 

It’s authentic AI. 

There are dozens of ways you can make this work. It all depends on the inputs you give it and the prompts you guide it with along the way.

This will be the standard way of doing things in a few years. Just wait.

AI will change marketing.

Here are the 6 options we will have left. 

This is just my prediction. 

I'm looking for push back, questions, and additions. Earlier this week I posted about how I think AI will take marketing jobs.

I truly believe there will be far less jobs in marketing jobs five years from now then there are today, but there will still be marketers. 

Here are the 6 paths I predict we will take:

1. Relationship Marketer

AI will erode trust in a lot of ways. I expect some marketers will specialize in building strategic relationships with gatekeepers, influencers, partners, vendors, etc. Great PR people already do this. 

AI can't be a human, so it will never be able to build relationships in the same way. 

2. Technical Marketer

This is the obvious one, right? Somebody has to manage all these AI systems. This will be the marketing ops role that is the technical hub for marketing.

3. Entrepreneur

A lot of marketers will go solo into coaching, consulting, agency work, or some other related business that make the most of their specialty skills. AI will make it easier and cheaper to run a business than ever before.

4. Strategic Leader

There will always be a need to provide strategic guidance for all of this AI (with the help of an AI copilot of course). They will also be the glue for the team to navigate change across the AI and human teams.

5. Experience Designer

AI can create, but somebody will have to be there to curate and guide that creative process. They won't be the ones making the design, music, or videos. Shoot, a lot of that stuff will be personalized to the viewer anyway. What this role will do is shape the overall experience. They are like Disney Imagineers who think about the experience wholistically in a way AI can't, because it's not human and can't feel what we feel.

6. Exit Marketing All Together

Many will opt out of marketing work entirely and hunt for opportunities somewhere else.

Future Roles of Marketing

I like AI Marketing... but dang.

Can we focus more on how to use AI to improve our products so that they are actually worth marketing? 

How about we 10x our product value without raising prices with the help of AI before we try to multiple our growth efforts with AI. 

I'm not about this for everybody, by the way.

Just companies who know they have good product/market fit.

Ya'll got something good. Now make it great.

Makes all that marketing effort worth it later.

Cold outreach's become deceptive and less human.

They are getting remarkably good at sounding human, like they actually know what I do, and setting up some kind of angle that pulls you into engaging.

Yet, all of them are fully automated.

Which makes many of their hyper-personalization a lie.

It leaves a lot of room for people to use AI to become more efficient... so that they can actually do the human thing of actually reading the website/profile so that you can say something genuine. 

Look, not all automated cold outreach is bad. I've seen a few good campaigns out there. A few clever scripts that were genuine without lying. 

But, the industry is running in the wrong direction.

And that's good news! 

It means there is a lot of opportunity for those who take the higher road. 

Let's stay human while we become AI-driven.
