I don’t usually rant on LinkedIn… but this one needs saying.

“I’ll pay you when I get results.”

Which sounds like:

“I’ll pay my therapist when I’m healed.”

“I’ll pay the trainer when I have abs.”

“I’ll pay my accountant when I get my rebate.”

“I’ll pay the developer when my site goes viral.”

I’ll pay my burnout coach when I’m recovered.

Sounds ridiculous, right?

But coaches, consultants, creatives, we hear this all the time.

Here’s why I don’t do “payment on results” (aka… working for free):

1️⃣ It undervalues the years I’ve spent mastering my craft.

If someone doesn’t respect that, we’re probably not a fit.

2️⃣ It attracts the wrong kind of energy.

When people don’t have skin in the game, they usually don’t *show up and do the work.*

3️⃣ Lead gen isn’t a vending machine.

I can’t guarantee the weather tomorrow, and I can’t guarantee outcomes you won’t take ownership of.

Look, I get it.

You’ve been burned.

Me too.

Last June, I paid $13K to a coach who delivered nothing.

Not even a half-hearted apology.

But that experience didn’t make me expect every coach and consultant after that to “prove themselves for free.”

Because trust is the price of entry in business.

Not the reward after you get what you want.

This Sunday is my birthday. But it hasn’t always been a day of celebration.

Because it’s the day I realised my dad was dying

For years, I dreaded my birthday.

Truth is, I’m grateful for that experience.

Because in his final 24 hours, as I kissed his forehead, tears falling onto his face…

I said goodbye, and realised something life-changing.

Life is shorter than we think.

My dad worked hard his entire life.

Six days a week. Every week.

He provided for us, yes.

But he missed a lot too.

Especially in the hard times.

And when he died, I made a decision:

→ I would never have a job that took me away from the people I love.

→ I’d build a business that gave me freedom: to work from anywhere, anytime, with anyone.

→ I’d create a life I didn’t want to escape from.

That lesson was my dad’s final gift to me.

I carry it every day.

What’s the most valuable lesson your dad taught you?

They say I’m obsessed. 

Maybe they’re right.

I’m up at 5:45 AM every single day. 

I haven’t missed a lift in over 5 years. I hit my cardio zones like it’s religion. 

I meditate, journal, and walk 10,000 steps daily, no matter the weather. 

I haven’t touched a drop of alcohol in nearly 6 years. 

I read before bed instead of doom scrolling like a zombie.

“You’re so disciplined,” they say.

Thing is…discipline is easy when it’s an act of love. 

For your mind. 

Your body. 

Your spouse. 

Your family. 

Your clients.

When you take care of yourself, you’re taking care of them too.

What’s one thing you do that others call disciplined?

I’ve cried after sales calls.

Scrolled job boards looking for a way out.

But I’ve never given up…

→ When a big fitness influencer stole the sales page I spent months perfecting

→ When I sent thousands of DMs and got nothing but silence

→ When I wasted $12K on a coach who delivered nothing

→ When a furious client did a chargeback and stole $10K

→ When I took over 90 sales calls just to get one yes

→ When the market crashed and no one was buying

But I didn’t quit.

Why?

Because this mission was never about me.

It’s about the people I’m here to help.

Keep DMing and you WILL reach someone at the right time.

When I was 25, I landed my “dream job” as a tattoo apprentice.

I remember walking into that studio thinking, “I’ve made it.”

I felt proud. Excited. 

Like everything I’d worked for was finally happening.

But it didn’t take long for the cracks to show.

As an apprentice, I wasn’t getting paid. Not a penny.

So I worked 13-hour shifts every weekend at a secure unit, just to afford rent and food.

Then I got the phone call.

My dad’s cancer had spread to his bones. 

They said he had months left.

Suddenly I was stuck in an impossible triangle:

Keep the tattoo job (these apprenticeships are gold dust)

Work weekends so I could eat...

Or spend time with my dad while I still had the chance.

I was living on two hours sleep a night.

Barely functioning.

Anxious. Numb. Fantasising about just one day off where I could breathe.

Then, running on empty, I made a mistake, I left expensive machinery switched on at the studio.

I got sacked.

I was devastated. 

That apprenticeship had been my dream for years.

But you know what?

It turned out to be a blessing.

Getting fired gave me the one thing I didn’t realise I was desperate for: time.

Time to be with my dad. 

Properly. Fully present. No work distractions. No stress. Just us.

And those last few months with him?

I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

That “dream job” wasn’t really my dream.

It was just the story I was telling myself at the time.

What I really needed was purpose. Ownership. Freedom.

Losing that job didn’t break me.

It made space for the life I was meant to live.

A life on my terms. With my values.

One where I never have to choose between the people I love and the work I do.

And it all started with getting fired.

Funny how life works like that, isn’t it?

Ask yourself:

I found the real secret to financial freedom.

And it’s not what anyone’s selling you.

Not crypto.

Not day trading.

Not £997 courses promising “passive income while you sleep.”

Not building a team so big you can delegate everything and chill.

None of it.

The real secret?

Not needing more stuff to feel free.

→ I don’t own a 5-bed house. I rent a one-bed maisonette.

→ I don’t drive an Audi. I ride a bike.

→ I don’t wear designer brands. Uniqlo suits me just fine.

→ My earbuds? £20 from Amazon.

And yet...

I’ve never felt wealthier.

Because freedom isn’t found in having more.

It’s found in needing less.

Here’s what financial freedom really means to me:

→ Working with people I like, not people I have to tolerate

→ Taking time off without justifying it

→ Helping my team when they’re in a tight spot

→ Getting private healthcare when I need it

→ Showing up for family, whenever life calls

When I’m gone, I won’t be taking my stuff.

Just my memories.

Of who I helped.

And how I lived.

The only way to win the money game… is to stop playing it.

So let me ask:

What does freedom look like for you?

The other day, one of my clients vented to me:

“My DMs just aren’t working. No one’s replying.”

She looked frustrated. Drained. Like she was ready to bin the whole strategy.

I smiled and said what I always say in moments like this:

“Let’s separate the drama from the data.”

Because here’s what we uncovered…

She’d sent around 100 messages in total.

She’d shared two booking links.

That’s a 2% positive reply rate.

And that’s not failure.

That’s bang on what the data says you should expect.

Because only 2% of your market is ready to buy right now.

The other 98% are scrolling. Watching. Lurking. Not ready, yet.

But here’s what most people do at this point:

They panic.

They start rewriting their DMs 37 times.

They question the whole strategy.

They say “outbound doesn’t work”.

But if you’re getting 2 positive replies for every 100 messages?

That’s not a problem.

That’s a pipeline.

That’s a numbers game working exactly as it should.

If you’re not getting that?

Then yes, you’ve got something to fix.

Could be your message.

Could be who you’re targeting.

Could be the timing.

But please, for the love of your business,don’t kill the engine because you don’t like the speed in first gear.

Track your numbers.

Trust your data.

And leave the drama at the door.

“It’s NOT fair!” - I used to scream this as a kid…

And my mum would calmly reply:

“No, Tanya. Life isn’t fair.”

At the time, it felt like a cruel response.

But looking back… it might be the most empowering thing she ever taught me.

Most of us are raised in a world that tells you things like 

“You deserve this,” 

or “If you work hard, everything will go your way.”

But real life is not an Instagram reel.

Life throws curveballs.

Clients ghost you after promising the moon.

Your “best launch ever” tanks.

You work weekends while someone less talented gets the spotlight.

Fair? Not even close.

But here’s where it gets even better…

Accepting that life isn’t fair might be the ultimate mindset upgrade.

Because when you stop expecting things to go your way, you stop being shocked when they don’t.
 
You stop wasting energy on “why me?” and start focusing on “what now?”

This little mindset tweak has changed everything for me in biz (and life)

❌ No, life isn’t fair.

✅ But once you stop expecting it to be, you become unshakeable.

I watched back every one. Analysed every word. Made a plan for what to improve.

Try this:

→ Make sure every lead has BANT (budget, authority, need, timing).

→ Watch every call. Take notes. Focus on 1 improvement per session.

→ I’ve sent 100s of thousands of cold DMs on LinkedIn since 2015. That’s how I learned how to book calls from cold.

Still ready to give up after a few low-impression posts?

Try this:

→ Post more. Frequency = feedback.

→ Export your analytics. Drop them into ChatGPT. Ask what’s working. Then double down.

→ It’s taken me 10 years and thousands of pounds invested to learn how to create content that brings in leads.

Still think your outreach “doesn’t work” after a few dozen messages?

Try this:

→ Test one message per 100 sends.

→ Look for a 2% positive reply rate (or better).

→ If it flops, tweak one element. Then test again.

1️⃣ Complaining about having no pipeline while prioritising busy work. Like rebranding, building (another) website etc.

None of that matters if you’re not creating opportunities.

2️⃣ Sending 300 messages and expecting to hit gold. Volume does matter, but so does mindset.

Don’t assume something's broken just because you didn’t get instant results.

3️⃣ Automating your way to nowhere. People on LinkedIn aren’t stupid. They can smell a fake message a mile off, use a bit of elbow grease instead ;-)

4️⃣ Using the same dusty template on everyone. Copy paste isn’t a strategy. Testing is.

5️⃣ Making business decisions based on how you feel instead of the facts.. Feelings aren’t facts. Check your data.

6️⃣ Hoping January saves you. Hope is not a business strategy. Posting content and sending DMs is.

7️⃣ Relying on referrals to survive. If you don’t control it, it’s not a growth plan. It’s a gamble.

8️⃣ Waiting until January to start. The most successful people don’t wait for perfect timing. They act.

9️⃣ Wasting hours on networking calls with freeloaders. If it doesn’t move the needle, it’s not networking. It’s charity.

🔟 Trying to warm them up instead of offering help. If they’re bleeding, they need stitches. Not a long preamble.

Every business owner falls for this trap before Christmas (and pays for it in January)

I don’t buy my wife Christmas presents.
 
And no, it’s not because I’m cheap.

We made the decision years ago. 

No exchanging gifts on Christmas. 

No frantic shopping. No performative generosity.

Here’s why:

We believe buying gifts just because a calendar tells you to is a bit of a scam.

One that’s been brilliantly executed by the retail industry and kept alive by social conditioning.

Now before you throw a snow globe at me…

Let me be clear. 

I love giving gifts. I love surprising people. 

I love seeing the look on someone’s face when you get them something meaningful.

But what I don’t love is forced gifting. Obligatory gifting. Guilt-driven gifting.

In the past, for me…

→ Most Christmas shopping was last-minute panic buying.

→ The gifts were rarely deeply appreciated.

→ Many of them end up in landfill or a charity shop.

→ And worst of all, they didn’t strengthen relationships. They just fulfilled a seasonal checklist.

So instead of waiting for a birthday or Christmas, I give gifts when it matters. 

When it means something. 

When I see something and think, “They’d really love this.”

Not because an ad told me I should.

The question I’ve been asking myself lately is:

What would it look like to stop living on autopilot?

To question the rituals, routines, and habits we’ve inherited without consent?

What’s one tradition you’ve opted out of that’s made your life better?
