(and how to sound more positive)

Saying “I can’t” too much can make people think you don’t want to help.
It’s okay to say no, but there’s a better way to say it.

Here’s how to do it well:

1/ Instead of “I can’t come”
 → Say: “I can come after [time]. Is that okay?”
 This shows when you are free.

2/ Instead of “I can’t help with that”
 → Say: “This person can help you better than me.”
 This gives them another option.

3/ Instead of “I can’t do more work”
 → Say: “I have a lot now. Let’s check what is most important.”
 This shows you care about doing things right.

4/ Instead of “I can’t meet that deadline”
 → Say: “I need until [date] to do this well. Is that alright?”
 This asks for time to do a good job.
