On January 10, my granddaughter turned one.

I couldn't be there to celebrate with her, but my phone kept buzzing with photos and videos of her smiling and ‘talking’ with friends and family.

My first thought was worry. 
How does a small person handle so many people, the bright lights , the music, and other activities around her, without getting overwhelmed?

But she was not overwhelmed. 

Here's what she did. She simply met one person at a time.

In one picture, she’s handing her aunt a toy.
In the next, she’s resting her head on her dad's shoulder, smiling at an 'uncle'.
In another, she’s just watching her mom laugh at something her friend said.

She kept finding the next face and responding to it.

And this is what so many of my clients are learning to do.

They come in feeling pressured by expectations, by the many 'shoulds,' and they want to fix everything at once.

And when they start paying attention to what is right in front of them, they find things getting easier.

It is not knowing everything that gives you confidence; it is trusting yourself to take the next small step. 

This is the work I love - helping people solve the next piece and not the whole puzzle. 

Because the way forward isn't found in the big plan. 

It is built by the next, true, small step.

During my coaching certification, I worked with a pro bono client who was a brilliant IT engineer. I'll call him AK.

AK was very good at what he did. And also very well spoken. 

But when in a meeting with diverse nationalities, holding bigger titles and louder voices, he would stay quiet. 

He said that he didn't think he could add anything useful to these meetings with such ‘stalwarts.’ 
His point of view didn't matter.

He’d tried all the habit changes: preparing talking points, sitting at the table, and volunteering updates. 

But when the time came, he would freeze. 

It wasn't knowledge he was missing. It was his own permission.

As we worked through the problem, he was learning about his beliefs, and I was learning about the power of the right questions. 

He said something that changed everything during one session. 

He said he felt like he had "no business" talking, even though he knew the answer!

So we stopped working on how to speak. We began to work on a single belief.

We made up a sentence he could remember: ‘I am someone whose point of view brings something that no one else can.’

He didn't have to believe it all the way yet. He only had to act like it could be true.

That was a sentence that my coach had once given me. 
When I heard AK say he thought he had "no business" speaking, I finally got why it worked. 
Now it was my turn to give it to someone else.

Weeks later, AK didn't just say something. 

He asked a question that changed the course of a project. 

Later, a higher-up thanked him for the information he had shared that delivered cost savings on the  project.

The habit had not changed. The person living it, had.

This is what I learned from AK.

Change doesn't start with doing better. It starts with believing differently.

You can make yourself talk, but you might still feel like a fake 
or 
You could also start to see yourself as someone who belongs in the room and let your voice out.

Today, if you’re holding back because you feel out of place or outranked, try this:

Ask: What if my perspective is needed here?

Then, take one small action.
Just one comment. One question. One nod of agreement when you used to stay silent.

You don’t have to become someone new.

You just have to remember who you already are and let that person show up.

You just have to remember who you are and let that person come out.

I tried to map my goals for the year.
And ended with a page full of arrows, questions, and incomplete lists.

That was the conversation a potential client had with me on Monday morning.

Déjà vu, I thought. 
Because I’ve been there, done that, and I’m sure many of you have, too.

I still remember my chest tightening and the pressure building in my head. 
I had gone seeking clarity and landed more confused than ever.

I also remember stopping. 
Walking to my filter coffee maker and brewing a cuppa.

And in that simple act of stopping, not thinking, not planning, just stopping, 
I felt the pressure ease and the tightness around my chest begin to soften.

We often hear that clarity cures overwhelm. 
That we need better plans, sharper vision.

But what if we have it backwards?

Sometimes, chasing clarity is what overwhelms us.

My clients show me this all the time.

They arrive with a dozen conflicting priorities, trying to get clear on all of them at once.

The breakthrough never comes from adding another item to the list.
It comes from the relief of crossing one off.

From permitting yourself to close a door, so you can finally hear yourself think in the room you’re already in.

Clarity isn’t always a light you search for.

Sometimes, it is the space you give yourself when you switch off a few lights!

So if you have a lot going on in your mind today, don’t reach for more clarity.

Reach for the off switch.

Close one tab. Delete one old task. Decide one small thing is finished.

Make a little space.

Then wait.

The real clarity, the kind that is not pressure, will find you there.

My friends chose the science stream or the commerce stream in college. 

My closest friends chose the commerce stream. So my parents ‘encouraged’ me to follow suit. 

On hindsight,  it was like using an old GPS that only knew one route, the one everyone else took. 

Fast forward 25 years and there I was , wondering  “How did I even get here?”

Does this sound like your story too?

The truth is that most of us are walking paths laid down by someone else. 

By our parents’ hopes, our boss’s expectations, or just the quiet momentum of “what’s next.”

But there is another way. A way to walk with your eyes open.

It begins with noticing and I wish I’d had a simple way to do that sooner. 

That’s why I now use  a simple tool I  call the ‘Weekly Path Check’. 

It takes five minutes, maybe on a Sunday evening or a quiet morning. 

You just ask yourself three questions:

1. Where am I walking right now? 
   (Look at your past week. What did your time, energy, and focus actually go toward?)

2. Is this path taking me toward a life that feels like mine? 
   (Not “is it impressive?” or “is it normal?” But does it align with what you value, deep down?)

3. What’s one small step I could take this week to adjust my direction, even just a few degrees? 
   (This isn’t about overhauling everything. It could be saying no to one thing, saying yes to another, or simply pausing to breathe.)

You don’t need to change your whole life today. 

You just need to notice the path you’re on and know you’re allowed to choose another.

Because a conscious path isn’t always straighter. 

But it’s always yours.

PS. Every Saturday, I share a tool I’ve used myself and with my coaching clients that has helped us reset our beliefs and thought process.

Last week, I cleaned out my medicine cabinet. 

I was looking for an antihistamine I was sure I had, and what I found was old prescriptions, expired meds, and some old phone chargers! 

I shut the drawer as fast as I opened it and just got new meds from the pharmacy instead.

But after that, every time I opened the drawer, I’d feel that small pinch of  ‘I should really deal with that.’

Eventually, I did ( the very same day!)

I think our minds have drawers like that, too.

Those accumulating small things like
that unanswered text you keep forgetting to reply to. 
that thing someone said that still bothers you, but you never mentioned
that project you said yes to, even though your instinct told you otherwise.

These things don’t feel like crises. They feel like background buzz. 

But altogether, they create a kind of static that ensures you are never at ease.

You can still function, but you are never fully there.

When I finally emptied that drawer, I didn’t just have space for a first aid box and basic meds, but space for my spare spectacles too! 

I felt more comfortable  in my own room. 
I felt a sense of being settled inside me.

One small clearance creates room. 
Room creates calm. 
And in the calm, you can finally hear your own thoughts again.

So maybe today, it’s not about figuring your whole life out. 

Maybe it’s just one small thing like a cluttered drawer, an unfinished task, or a truth you haven’t said. 

Close that one loop. 

Notice the calm that follows. 
Notice the clarity in thoughts it brings.
