I volunteered to help produce content and manage their social media account to retain a connection with their customers during the COVID-19 Lockdown. It has taught me about what makes content engaging, the importance of brand consistency, and how to produce targeted commercial content that expresses their core values. 

During this position I took on numerous tasks, which included:

- Creating photographic and graphic content for the Facebook page.
- Designing a website using Wix.
- Added the business to online directories.
- Used Adobe InDesign to create a menu for the website.
- Responded to customer comments and messages via. Facebook.

I have  increased the page’s likes from 979 in March 2020 to 1,310 in September 2020, which is a 33.81% increase. This has been achieved by increasing the frequency of posts and creating content that drives engagement.

- The pace is slower but pressure higher

In small teams:
- There’s no hiding
- Success = Outcomes
- You learn how business works
- Both the pace and progression is fast
- Your work directly impacts the bottom line

And, let’s not forget those one-person marketing teams:
- Self-directed
- You learn a little about a lot
- Managing unrealistic expectations 
- Literally nobody else gets your job
- Success = shareholder value from TikTok posting 

Big teams create specialists.
Small teams create leaders.
Single-person teams create burnout.

I’ve done the lot.

Which is why I’d never toss aside a CV with the scrappy experience in favour of one with big known brands only.
(They do still get my attention though, I’m only a marketer drawn to shiny things after all 😂)

5 things I'd do if I was starting a social account FROM SCRATCH:
(aka the process we follow with any account when we first get the login anyway)

Whether LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube or Instagram, the principles remain the same. It's the execution that gets platform-specific.



1. Set Content Pillars

Aka what do you actually want to be known for?

→ Set 3-4 max
→ These are the associations you're building
→ Revisit these regularly

If you're creating content outside of these pillars, stop. It's probably a crappy trend or rant that won't actually help you grow meaningfully.

 2. STRATEGY STRATEGY STRATEGY

What are you posting, when, where, and who needs to see it?

→ Content calendar considering seasonality
→ Where are your audience actually looking?
→ Where are your conversions and how are you tracking?

The actual content creation takes half the time when you know what you're posting, to who, where, and why.

 3. Collate All Existing Assets

What do we actually have that's usable?

→ Set the brand guidelines
→ Template up your assets
→ Plan in content shoots/creation

Strategy should lead the content, always. Repurposing is great, but only to a point.

4. Posting Cadence & Consistency

How often are you actually going to post and in what kind of format?

→ Choose formats you can easily batch
→ 2x weekly is better than 10x monthly but in one week
→ Balance brand-building and sales

Include a few formats and templates so you've got variety and you're hitting the Top, Middle, and Bottom of your marketing funnel.

5. Engage Like Hell

Proactively engage with your audience, similar accounts, and create those additional touchpoints.

→ Collaborations
→ Showing up offline with experiences/IRL networking
→ Reply to every comment and DM wherever possible

People soon stop engaging if you ghost them every time they do!


Sure, it's harder to grow now than a few years ago with the barrier to entry to start posting on the floor, everyone's a content creator.

That doesn't mean it's not possible.
We're still growing our clients' accounts over 10k monthly collectively, so don't stress.

What the heck is a TikTok search ad?!
TikTok ads have shifted more than any other platform the last couple of months and you'd be DAFT not to have a play about.

Search ads help you index your ad content for people looking for exactly what you're offering.

It's not interrupting someone's scroll time to try to convince them they need your product/service.

You're presenting the thing they're after, when they're looking.

Which I think is the beauty of ads.

I never want to show something to someone who wouldn't ever need or want it because:
A) It's annoying.
B) They're never going to buy.
C) You're wasting your ad spend and diluting your ROAS.

Bench didn't create a sample sale but a WHOLE EXPERIENCE for their revival collection launch.

We shipped a load of protein samples and totes to the Purple Riot team for the Open House revival night to launch the Bench collection.

It's not enough to invite a couple of influencers and expect them to just 'create the vibe'.

This one had a lot of promise so I straightened my hair for the occasion and packed my camcorder to capture the lot.

What sets this apart?
→ The venue:
Very cool, not your regular shop front.

→ The experience:
Actual tattoos being done, a DJ, the decor, they pulled out all the stops.

→ The pull?
The clothes were an insanely good price so we could all go home with a new wardrobe whilst all proceeds went to charity.

→ The freebies:
Great drinks, bath and body care, obviously ISOVIBE protein and merch, and tattoos free for the first 25 and 50% off for the first 50 purchases.

They filled the space with creators, dancers, and anyone else who wanted to bag the new collection and have a yap.
