“Design, implementation and evaluation of a cooperative adaptive cruise control aiming to improve fuel economy and driving comfort”

As part of this project, I worked on processing Traffic Light and Intersection Topology data sent over WLAN at four intersections in Aachen. I was able to develop an application using Java OSGi which processed the received data. This application was able to build the intersection topology and help identify the relevant traffic lights for the vehicle at any intersection.

In the next phase of this thesis, an extension to the existing ACC system was made to incorporate the traffic light information. Based on the traffic light phase, different deceleration profiles based on driver behaviour analysis at traffic lights, were calculated. The extended ACC or the Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) was implemented successfully on the dSPACE Autobox.  The effect of the additional WLAN information on the fuel consumption and driving efficiency was studied subsequently during this thesis.
