WHAT A YEAR. I finally just mapped out LinkedIn content for the next month... I had to pause for most of this year. For those curious....



It's not even about the fatigue of seeing the same exact post reiterated a million times on LinkedIn about which acronym is right or debating whether something (GEO?) exists or not, or all the other stuff that is just not anything new or useful to me...

(No offense... still lots of y'all whose content I adore on here)


But it was just life!

This year I made drastic changes to my business due to a massive revenue loss and also general malaise with my day to day and where agency CEO life had taken me, I moved across the Atlantic, I got married, and just generally had a lot of stuff going on that I won't discuss on here.

In the spring I got shingles from stress. I don't recommend it. I thought I was either having a heart attack or my back was breaking, but I was also really itchy? It was a huge wakeup call for me.

Anyway it took me a while but I think I'm finally back in the groove of things. 

Missing my community and I'm losing my touch on social media - so I need to start exercising that muscle again.

But I needed that break from LinkedIn (I still kinda checked in every day though?)

What are topics you are OH SO TIRED of seeing on LinkedIn, and what do you WISH you were seeing? Help me out!

"We need to take about our competitors on our website."
 
90% of my clients make a face when I bring this up.
 
Not only are they afraid of giving oxygen to the competitors, they also find it "pretty weird" to build a list of best tools and name themselves at the top.

But if you want to:
- Rank for "best [category] software"
- Appear in the lists that ChatGPT and AI Overviews serves users when they search for "best [category] software"

You're going to have to build a dang list and be in it.

We did a test listicle with a client recently, and within 2 weeks of publishing it had been cited over 100 times for the exact search, and delivered 5 quality signups in the same time. The page has a 9% conversion rate when the rest of the website is about 0.25%, and regular JTBD content can convert around 0.75%-2% at best.

Acknowledging competitors builds, rather than erodes, authority and trust.

Be transparent, be honest, acknowledge your potential bias and speak of your differentiators. 

People are used to reading listicles where the author (a SaaS brand) includes themselves in it. 

It's only weird if your post doesn't help them make an educated decision, or if you lie.

If you want your brand to appear in LLMs and in search - this is the way to do it.

OR if you really don't want to do it, you must understand this is going to strongly impact the ROI of your SEO program.

I figured out why the bigger websites are the ones losing the most traffic right now:



1. Rapid content decay
When you've been publishing for 5-10 years, (some at a pretty high scale), your library starts getting out of hand. While some big website teams will have a solid  content update workflow in place - it's rarer than you think. Content today needs to be fresher than 2 years ago, and if you're investing the majority of your budget to new content, you're just adding to the problem (more to keep up with). Set yourself up with a clean content update workflow.

2. Way too much content
I've been pruning all of my clients' content and all we see is traffic growing. I even recommend pruning content that DOES drive traffic if it's attracting the wrong audience. Just cut it down so it's easier on Google bots AND those who are managing and keeping your library up to date.

3. Too much irrelevant content
Big websites who succeeded in the top-funnel strategies of the last 15 years are still paying the price now. Google is very actively trying to figure out what websites are about right now and cutting irrelevant keywords ruthlessly. It's probably not bad for you revenue wise, but if you're stressing out about the traffic drop, know that it *should* regulate, though you'll have a new baseline. I'd say help Google out and again, PRUNE what's not relevant and update the rest.

When you tag someone (or 30 people...) and they don't engage, LinkedIn sees that as a sign that you're spamming.

Tagged people and brands are the first to see your post because they're getting a notification. 

If they ignore it, LinkedIn thinks your content is irrelevant to your audience.

If they engage, great! LinkedIn sees that you understand your audience and will show your post to more people.

LinkedIn is a rented channel. You pay them with your content.

LinkedIn needs you to make money.

Your content keeps people on LinkedIn.

The longer they scroll, the more ads they see, and the more LinkedIn can charge businesses for eyeballs.

You don't own your audience. LinkedIn loans it to you.

But the more consistent you are at keeping people scrolling on LinkedIn, the more LinkedIn will love you.
