There are only two components to succeeding as an political and/or membership organisation:

1. Lowering barriers for taking the desired action (with you)
2. Increasing motivation for said action until it surpasses (1)

A lot of organisations struggle in the first category. They might feel their cause speak’s for itself. Or they often ask too much, too early of their target audiences. 

They might be excellent at building motivation, but they still fail to achieve the desired outcome; be it increasing fundraising revenue, keeping existing or attracting new members/supporters, winning an issue, etc.

As a result they spend even more time and money on building motivation; through campaigning, mobilisation, rapid response, etc but they still fail again and again.

In addition they start questioning their practices; Is our paid media not up to snuff? Is our e-mail marketing the problem? Should we get a new telemarketing agency? They might even look at replacing staff members.

Imagine instead that people can’t help themselves to take action with you.

Money flows to your cause. Supporters and members flock to your cause. And you leverage both to increase legitimacy and your influence on society.

“Everyone wants a village, but no one wants to be a villager.”

That means people want a strong community for support, but they are not willing to put in the effort and sacrifice required to be a part of it.

Being annoyed is the price we pay for connection and community.

It can mean sharing space when it’s inconvenient, showing up when you’d rather be home, or hosting when you’re tired.

Somewhere along the way, our fear of discomfort turned into hyper-independence – strict boundaries, perfect routines, and no interruptions.

When our boundaries become too rigid, they stop protecting us and start isolating us. They become walls.

We wonder why we feel so lonely. We’re paying for convenience with disconnection.
We traded the messiness of community for the ease of solitude and lost something vital along the way.”

Now we talk about community like it’s something we deserve — yet we’ve allowed the very systems we live in to dismantle the spaces that make community possible.

Like Dr. Sarah Stein Lubrano explains  capitalism took away our third places — the parks, local cafés, community centers, libraries, youth clubs — anywhere you could just be without paying for the privilege.

And with them, we lost our social muscles.
Now, being social feels exhausting.
Small talk feels awkward.

Meeting new people feels like a risk.
So we retreat into our private bubbles — perfect routines, online interactions, everything “on demand.” Convenience has become our comfort zone.

But comfort is causing social atrophy.
Strong community isn’t built from convenience — it’s built from presence.
From sitting with the awkwardness.
From practicing connection.

From choosing people over efficiency.
If we want the village back, we have to relearn how to be villagers.

👉 Be part of something messy and real.

We can rebuild the third places we lost — one intentional interaction at a time.

Europe Is Engineering Its Own Collapse

Europe talks about “resilience” as if saying the word makes us safer.
But the truth emerging from new research is harder to face:
our policies are quietly scaling collapse, not preventing it.

For years, we’ve told ourselves that Europe is a food-secure region — stable, responsible, and self-sufficient.
But the new provocation:  Resilience-Led Food Security by Aleksander Nowak  and Alex Hansten (2024), Dark Matter Labs, reveals something else:

Europe is behaving mindlessly, deepening the very vulnerabilities it claims to solve.

Just look at the data:

Europe uses far more land than it has. Over 338 million hectares of the land needed to feed Europe is effectively outsourced — much of it from biodiversity hotspots in Brazil, China, and Russia.

60% of Europe’s agricultural land footprint lies outside the EU. That means our food security depends on ecosystems we don’t control and supply chains we cannot stabilize.

We are the “world’s largest exporter” economically, yet we run a calorie and protein deficit. We export value while importing nutrition.

About 12% of the EU’s farm subsidies (CAP) — €6.8 billion — end up supporting food that’s exported outside Europe, mostly to wealthy countries.
We export the products, but keep the environmental damage.  

Efficiency gains are making things worse. As the report shows, the Jevons Paradox is alive in EU agriculture: higher efficiency → lower costs → bigger monocultures → more depletion → more fragility.

And yet we still hear the same comforting slogans:
“Food sovereignty.””
Open strategic autonomy.”
“Competitiveness.”

But slogans don’t build resilience.
Policies do.

And our current policies are accelerating instability — ecological, geopolitical, and economic.

The truth is simple:
Europe is optimizing for productivity in a world that urgently needs resilience.

And resilience is not an abstract ideal. It’s practical:

In living soils that can withstand shocks.

In diversified systems that don’t collapse when one supply chain fails.

In reducing externalized harm instead of importing risk.

In treating food systems as security infrastructure, not market commodities.

A resilience-led Europe is possible. But not if we continue pretending efficiency will save us. And not if the people who care — sustainability professionals, system thinkers, public servants — stay quiet.

Modern neoclassical economics is a scam.
And the evidence is right in front of us.

Our dominant macroeconomic models couldn’t even predict the 2008 financial crash — because they were never built to. They mathematically exclude the possibility of crisis.

Hyman Minsky said it decades before it happened:

“Any model that cannot generate a depression is not a model of capitalism.”

Yet these are still the models shaping government policy, central bank decisions, and global forecasts.

And the failures go far beyond finance.
These models can’t even account for climate change.

Yes. even the IPCC has relied on economic damage functions inspired by Nordhaus, which assume that up to 90% of the economy is “safe” from climate change because it happens indoors.
Let that sink in.

🧱 Manufacturing? Safe.
📊 Finance? Safe.
🏢 Services? Safe.
🌪 Ecosystems collapsing? Apparently not relevant.

This is the level of economic reasoning currently guiding the world’s response to the greatest crisis in human history.

The deeper problem? Neoclassical models systematically deny reality.
They assume:

🔹 Markets are naturally stable
🔹 Humans are perfectly rational
🔹 Debt doesn’t matter
🔹 Bubbles are “irrational” outliers
🔹 The economy always returns to equilibrium
🔹 Nature is an externality
🔹 Climate damages are marginal and smooth

In other words:

We built an economic worldview that cannot see instability, cannot see crisis, and cannot see ecological collapse — and then we trusted it to manage all three.

This isn’t just outdated.
It’s dangerous.

Because if a model cannot handle financial collapse or planetary breakdown,
why are we still using it to design the future?

It’s time to move on from economics that denies the world we actually live in.
