I’ve had so many conversations with strong, amazing, powerful women that still believe that prioritizing themselves is selfish.

It isn't.

When women (and men) live in survival mode, barely surviving the week, living for the weekend, or holidays, it doesn’t just impact them. 

The cost ripples outward.

Families feel it.
Workplaces feel it.
Communities feel it.

But when we live aligned lives that we love, something powerful happens.

When you honor your own power, your family feels safer. 
When you lead from alignment, your workplace becomes more humane. 
When you trust your inner wisdom, the culture around you begins to shift.

Loving your life is not a luxury.
It is a form of leadership.

What would you say if you were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award?

Sunday night at the SAG Aftra awards, Harrison Ford was recognized for his contribution to the movie industry. 

He is 83 years old, still working, and his 8 minute speech had everyone in the audience listening intently to every word. 

He was funny, gracious, and emotional as he spoke about his journey. 

Here are a few lessons that stood out to me:

1. He talked about how the first 15 years of his career, he would audition and work a little, but had to keep working as a carpenter to get by. 

➡️Don't give up on your dreams if they don't happen on your timeline. Do what you need to do until you can do what you want to do. 

2. He gave credit to two men who changed his life: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.  Star Wars and Indiana Jones helped him shift from part-time actor to full blown movie start in big franchises.

➡️You never know what connections you'll make or doors that will open that will change everything. 

3. He thanked other members of his team who were with him for decades and have since passed on. He said "they'd be happy for me."

➡️Never forget those who supported you along the way. 

4. He spoke about how he wanted to make art and do work that made a difference in the world. If you can make a living doing that, then you're really lucky.

➡️Do work that moves you, that you're passionate about, that will serve others, and pray that it can become your business/career/vocation.

5. He shared how he was lost in college until he met other misfits who were artists. That became his community, his tribe, his people. 

➡️Community is so important. Cultivate relationships with others who get you.

6. He thanked his wife and family for their love and support. 

➡️Our relationships matter. Honor them. Cherish your people. 

7. He gave thanks and acknowledged that he doesn't take any of his success for granted.

➡️Gratitude multiplies everything.

When you were young, you didn't need permission to try something new.

You just did it.

You learned to talk, walk, count, read, and ride your bike. 

But something changed along the way.

Now we need guarantees before we move.

We think if we just:

→ Wait until we feel ready
→ Plan it out perfectly

Then we'll finally start.

The truth is you'll never feel ready. And that's not the problem.

If you are waiting to feel ready, you've waited too long. 

Lessons learned aren't failures. They're information. 

Every step you take,  even the messy or painful ones, teaches you something the planning never could.

Nothing worth doing is guaranteed that it will work out.  It reveals itself as we moved toward it.

One experiment at a time.

You don't need to be good at it yet.
You don't need the whole plan.
You just need to begin.

Burnout is not failure. It's intelligence.

You're exhausted, and maybe can't remember a time when you weren't. 

It's not because you're weak. 
It's not because you lack resilience. 
It's because you've overextended and been out of alignment for too long. 

Our society normalizes burnout as a workplace phenomenon, but it's not. 

Burnout is the very signals our body sends to warn us that something is wrong: 

The Sunday scaries.
The Monday morning dread.
The mid-week exhaustion. 
The collapsing on Friday nights.
The inability to sit still, or unwind, or relax even on vacation. 

These aren't signs that something is wrong with you. 

They're signals that the way you're living may no longer reflect what's true for you.

I know because I lived it for years.

I gaslit my feelings, emotions, and even health scares because I was scared to slow down.

I finally got to the point where I thought, "I don't recognize myself anymore."

I realized that I wasn't ungrateful, or incapable, or failing. I was ignoring the inner wisdom that I should have been listening to. 

Burnout is not normal.
Burnout is information. 
It's your body, your nervous system, and your inner wisdom trying to get your attention.

The question to ask yourself isn't how to push through it.

The question is: what is this trying to tell me?

→ Where am I saying yes when I mean no?
→ What am I tolerating that's draining my energy?
→ What would I do differently if I trusted myself more?

Because you cannot change what you haven't acknowledged. And awareness is always the first step toward something different.

And you don't have to overhaul your life to start taking better care of yourself. I've created 3 Daily Routines Checklist that you can do in 20 minutes each day.

Fear is the loudest when we focus on ourselves.

How will I sound?
What will they think?
What if I make a mistake?

The more we think those thoughts, the harder it becomes to take the next step.

Whether it's speaking on a stage, posting something vulnerable online, or reaching out to someone we admire, the fear is the same. 

And it's almost always rooted in self-focus.

But something shifts when we turn our attention outward.

When the intention becomes service.
When the goal becomes connection.
When we show up simply to share what we've learned with someone who might need it.

Suddenly, the pressure softens and we can focus on service. 

Because it's no longer about proving ourselves, but instead about being present for someone else.

This shift in perspective has helped me every time I think about doing something that scares me, and I've seen it work countless times for my clients.

Whether it's speaking in public, creating content, or having difficult conversations.  The questions to ask is "Who might this help?"

And when I focus there, the fear doesn't fully disappear, but it does gets quieter. 
The mission becomes bigger than the fear.

What if the chapter you regret most was actually preparing you for what's next?

We all have one.

A decision that we still question. 

A season of life we wish we could redo. 

A relationship we stayed in for too long. 

A version of ourselves we're still a little embarrassed by.

Mine was staying too long in a career that I had outgrown. 

I hung onto the belief that I'd wasted time, when I should have moved more quickly. 

But I’ve realized that nothing is wasted. 

That chapter of my life prepared me in so many ways to do what I’m doing now.

Every year I stayed taught me something that I needed to learn.

When I stopped looking backward with self-judgment I started looking forward with gratitude.

Not because the past was perfect.
But because it brought me here.

Everyone wants the transformation.

But we don't always love what it takes to get there.

Here's what I see high-achievers do when they're in the middle of growth:

They compare their timeline to someone else's.
They try to rush through the uncomfortable parts.
They assume something is wrong because it doesn't feel good yet.

None of that speeds anything up.

Because the uncomfortable middle is the process.

We don’t get to skip any steps. 

That dark, slow, in-between stage when everything that was familiar dissolves, that’s the beginning of growth. 

Everytime, I’ve been there, I was convinced I’d made a mistake.

I felt like I was standing still. But I wasn’t. 

I had to have faith, and believe before it had manifested. 

Without the discomfort, the growth doesn't take root. 

So if you're in the messy middle right now and it feels slow, uncomfortable, and like nothing is happening, be patient. 

This might just be the most important season of your life.

Trust it. Even when you can't see it working.

Messy Middle

Bubble baths and face masks aren't going to fix your burnout.

I know that sounds obvious, but so many of us have been sold a version of self-care that's a bandaid to a bigger problem.

Victoria left a successful career at L'Oréal, went through eating disorder recovery, and completely redefined what self-worth means to her.

The most dangerous kind of exhaustion doesn't look like burnout. It looks like success.

March is Women's History Month. A time to celebrate how far women have come.

And we have come far.

But it's also important to talk about what the highlight reels don't cover:

The cost of arriving at the destination you worked your entire career to reach. And realizing it's not what you thought it would be.

That's a misalignment between the life you built and the woman you actually are.

I know because I lived it for years.

I had the career, the credentials, the education I had worked toward for decades. 

And I sat in a meeting one afternoon and thought "I don't recognize myself anymore."

I wasn't ungrateful or failing, I was just gone. 

If you woke up exhausted today, or already feeling behind, you're not failing either.

From the outside, everything looks fine. Maybe even great.
But you know the truth.

You show up for everyone. 
Check things off your to-do list. 
Work really hard.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, you realize you've lost the thread back to yourself.

You can stop performing success and start living it.

Successful Exhaustion

What would you do if fear wasn't holding you back?

Most of us are waiting to feel ready. 
Waiting to feel fearless.

That day may never come if we keep waiting. 

But practicing our courage muscle daily helps us to feel and become more courageous. 

This month's theme in my book Live the Width of Your Life is courage. And courage doesn't have to be big, but it will make us uncomfortable. 

Many of the courage challenges are small choices to stretch us:

✓Forgiving someone, not for them, but for you.

You don’t have to do any of this perfectly.

It's about choosing yourself even when it's uncomfortable.
Even when you are scared.
One small moment at a time. 

This week, I went on a night hike on a rainy, foggy night with my friend Roseanne Deucher, MPA.  She's the friend who always challenges me to do things I wouldn't normally do. (photo from that hike)

No head lamp, just the light on the path and sky to guide our way. 
And, it was magical and exhilarating.

Are you building your dream or keeping your backup plan warm?
Because you can't do both well.

Here's what I see high-achievers do:

They say they want the new chapter.  
They want the business, the pivot, and the aligned life.

But they keep one foot in the old identity… just in case.

They call it being responsible and practical.
But it creates a divided life that fails to produce the results you want. 

Your energy is finite, and your attention is sacred. 

Spreading yourself across two futures isn’t mitigating risk, it’s exhausting.
It looks like: 
→ Half-hearted action on the thing that matters most 
→ Decision fatigue that never lets up 
→ A nagging sense that you're not fully anywhere

Keeping your backup plan warm isn't safe.
It's a slow leak on the dream you say you want.

Because that dream? 
It doesn't need more time. It needs your full presence, and your full attention. 

The question isn't: What if this doesn't work?
It's: What if I actually gave it everything I have?

That's not risky, or recklessness, that's faith.

Not in the hedging, but in yourself.

Hedging Your Bets

Who are you if you don’t produce or achieve anything today?

If you didn’t accomplish anything?

If you couldn’t check anything off your to-do list?

If this makes you feel uncomfortable, I can guarantee you’re not alone.

For years, I didn't know who I was without my productivity.

My identity was built on output, external validation, and dopamine hits of crossing things off my to-list and emptying my inbox. 

After 25 years in corporate, I started building my business in January, 2019.

For the first time in my life, my calendar was completely empty. 

No meetings. No one's agenda to follow. Nowhere to be.

I felt free, but I also was terrified and uncomfortable. 

I decided not to fill it back up because I felt like I had to appear busy, and instead build a schedule and life aligned with my values and what was most important to me.

And what I found underneath all that striving?

Someone who was always enough.
Someone who didn't need to earn love.
Someone worthy just as she was.

Too many of us believe we have to say yes to every meeting, every invitation, every request.

But is that true, or is it just what we've been conditioned to believe?

I protect my calendar fiercely, because I finally get to build what I want.
