Most people assume I “run” all my businesses.

But the truth is I barely run any of them.

Here’s the actual timeline of businesses I’ve started:

   2001 - Swimming pool installation
   2012 - Professional speaking
   2014 - Consulting/coaching agency
   2017 - Pool manufacturing
   2019 - Swimming pool franchise
   2020 - Sold #4 and #5
   2021 - Offshore fishing charter
   2024 - PriceGuide (software) + The Question First Group
   2025 - AI Trust Signals (software) + Pet food manufacturing

I’m still an owner in all of them except the two I sold.

People ask me all the time:
“How do you manage so many companies?”

My answer is simple:
"I don’t."

At least, not really.

I have exceptional business partners (and people) who run them without me.

My job is strategy, big picture, and making sure we are world-class in sales and marketing.

But a great CEO I am not.

And I’m perfectly fine with that.

After 25 years of building, failing, pivoting, selling, and starting again… here are a few lessons that stick:

👉 1. Most entrepreneurs don’t make great CEOs.
At a certain size, the skills that built the business aren’t the same skills needed to run it. This isn’t a knock, it’s self-awareness. Sadly, most CEOs never know when this day has come.

👉 2. Choose partners who are great at what you’re terrible at.
If your partner is just another version of you, you don’t have a partner, you have a mirror. You do NOT need another you.

👉 3. Your first “vision” for the business is almost always wrong.
The market will teach you what it wants...if you’re willing to listen. Observe. Adjust. Observe. Pivot. Observe…

👉 4. Someone on the team has to go to bed thinking about the business.
If that’s not you, you better know exactly who that person is.

👉 5. Your business only scales when you stop trying to be everything.
Ego doesn’t scale. Self-awareness does. You do NOT need to be everyone’s hero.

What a magical couple of days teaching MasterCraft Boat Company dealers how to create extraordinary connections with their customers. But let me tell you a powerful story how one man in the audience immediately applied what he learned to his personal life:

During the event, one of the attendees recieved a text from his daughter that she was having a really hard time.  Instead of calling her and quickly going into "Dad" mode by telling her what she needed to do (or think, or feel, etc.) he simply reached out to her and kept inviting her to "tell me more."

He said it was one of the most powerful conversations he'd had with his daughter in a long time.

That's what is so rewarding about teaching leaders and sales pros to communicate at the highest levels - when done properly, it transcends their "professional" life and deeply affects their "personal" life.  And then, because of that, they come to you months later and  say, "That training has affected my entire life. I can't thank you enough for the impact you've had on my family."

Once again, this is just another reason why I love my job.

Wild Stat:
After analyzing 3,500 websites, only ONE scored a “perfect” for NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone Number).

If you own a business (especially a location-based one) you already know NAP matters. Legacy Google has always relied on it for local signals. But here’s the part business must now understand:

👉 LLMs (like ChatGPT) rely on NAP even more.

To a large language model, inconsistent NAP is a major "ding" on your trust score. If your core business identity isn’t consistent across the internet, the model questions whether you’re legitimate… which directly impacts whether it will recommend you.

When Patrick Moorhead and I reviewed this dataset from AI Trust Signals, we honestly thought something was broken, so we checked the data again and again.

But the result held: 1 out of 3,500. 😳 

Yes, that's a pretty shocking number.

So here’s the takeaway:

AI needs every possible reason to trust you. (I really can't stress this enough.)

NAP consistency is one of the simplest (and strongest) trust signals you can control.

So do this today:
👉 Audit every platform, directory, social profile, association listing, map entry, citation, and third-party mention of your business.
 👉 Make every instance of your name, address, and phone number identical--same formatting, same punctuation, same abbreviations, everywhere.

It may take an hour or two but will be well worth it.

Remember my friends, when it comes to AI recommending you online, small inconsistencies create potentially massive visibility penalties.

And if less than 1% of businesses are doing this correctly, that means one thing:
Fix your NAP, and you instantly separate yourself from the entire market.

Turns out that AI (and humans) HATE recommending stale/old content.

That's why EVERY marketer should make this a non-negotiable in 2026:

👉 Put a “Last Updated” timestamp on every major page and article on your website, just like you see in the photo here from HubSpot.

I know, this may seem incredibly tedious.

But at AI Trust Signals, we’re seeing over and over that it matters a lot, not just to readers, but to the AI systems deciding whether your content is confident, current, and *safe* to recommend.

And please understand, this isn’t just a "front-end" thing.

You also need the machine-readable version on the back end.

This means implementing the proper schema markup so AI can instantly verify when the page was truly updated. (Yes, it appears every marketer will be forced to a Schema expert in the future. 🤷‍♂️ )

This is just one of many "new rules of the game" that we're seeing because of AI.

And yes, it may feel a little annoying.

But it's the reality of where online content is heading, and so there's no need to complain about it.

Fact is, "content freshness" as a trust signal will only matter more and more moving forward. 

It's a new era in content my marketing friends.

Time to lean in.

While teaching a workshop this morning, I had a salesperson come up to me during a break and said, "Marcus, I don't do well with conflict. When a customer is upset, I freeze. Can you help?"

This simple question led to a great conversation, but the core of the answer I gave comes down to three simple steps any team can learn with a little bit of practice. 

Step #1: LET THEM VENT: 
This is a bit hard for folks to understand because the tendency is to immediately try to "fix" the situation. The issue with fixing is that the customer doesn't get a chance to feel heard. Your job is to make sure they feel VERY heard. Which means you let them vent, and even when you think they may be done, you ask them if there is anything else they're unsettled about. This step is the most important by far, yet the most overlooked in the world of customer experience.

Step #2: REPEAT WHAT THEY SAID: 
Not only must they feel heard, but they must feel *understood.* This occurs when you repeat the words they used and confirm, "What I've heard you say is..." (Again, do not use your words here. Use *their* words. Those are the ones that matter.)

Step #3: LET THEM VERBALIZE THE POTENTIAL SOLUTION: 
Assuming the individual has has a legitimate complaint (which is true in most cases), once you've allowed them to vent and have repeated their thoughts, you sincerely ask, "What would you like to happen to make this right?"

Now, granted, businesses can't always do what the customer asks for, but you at least want to put the ball in their court first.  Interestingly enough, often times the only thing they were looking for were step 1 & 2. In other words, they just wanted to feel heard and understood. But by asking them what they would like to do to make the situation right, you've now allowed them to at least state what they feel would be the appropriate solution.

Ultimately, there is no foolproof method of resolving customer frustration, but at a minimum you want to train (with role play) your team what to say and how to say it for these situations. 

Like the young man that approached me this morning, they shouldn't freeze when moments of conflict arise.

Instead, they should be ready for the moment. And if they follow these three simple steps, they are very likely to not only diffuse the situation, but create a lasting relationship as well.

As always, a little training goes a long ways.

Don't wait for everyone in your industry to move while you continue to do things the ways they've always been done.

Entire industries where "call for quote" is the norm are about to be upended.

Last week I signed a client who’d been following my LinkedIn content for 22 months.

They watched dozens and dozens of my videos.

They even saw me speak on stage live.

On the call they said, “It feels like I already know you, Alex!”

THIS my friends, is what video content + a great content strategy does. 

In case you haven’t been paying attention you are battling every single competitor out there for 2 core things:

1.) Attention
2.) Trust 

You have to get attention or you cease to exist in your buyers mind so this is numero uno.  

Once you get that attention though, you have to earn their trust so they see you as the person or company that can genuinely help them solve their critical and urgent problem. 

Sometimes they reach out after 1 or 2 pieces of content and it just happens to hit at the right moment (Not usually, but it’s happened)

Other times….its 22 months. 

Average….3-6 months

But when they show up ready to buy.
And they’re excited and saying you were their “A choice” by far.

The sales process is a heck of alot more fun and significantly faster. 

This should be every single company's goal heading into 2026.

It’s something that I always have to remind myself of because like you... I am ambitious and am building something special with my businesses.  

But NEVER at the expense of my kids. ❤️ I believe you can do both.

If you’re posting content but not winning clients, this might be why.

Most founders assume it’s because:

“We’re not on the right platform”
“We need better hooks”
“We should be doing more video”

And sure, that may be true.

But almost every time, it comes back to one thing first:

👉 There’s no performance-driven culture around content marketing.

When I come into a 7-8 figure B2B company I ask: “How do you measure success on LinkedIn and social?”

And the answer is usually some version of: “Well… we’ve been posting consistently but not really seeing anything from it…”

That’s activity.
Not performance.

When content isn’t tied to clear goals, KPIs, and accountability,
it almost never turns into pipeline.

And it certainly doesn't position you as the go to company in your space that wins attention and earns trust. 

Because nobody owns:
-how success is defined
-how progress is tracked
-how quality is enforced
-how people improve week over week

You can plug great tactics into a low performance culture and still get nothing.

If the bar is low, the output will be low.
If no one flags bad content, bad content becomes the standard.
If no one coaches, no one improves.

And that’s exactly why you see:
-AI-generated posts that are obviously chat gpt
-surface-level thought leadership
-random announcements
-inconsistent messaging across channels

It’s not a tactic issue.
It's a culture + strategy issue. 

And sometimes the right move is bringing someone in.
Not because you failed. But because high-performing teams know when there’s a gap.

Skills gap.
Strategy gap.
System gap.

The teams that win are the ones willing to admit it and fix it asap. 

If your content isn’t driving revenue, I’d start by asking yourself this HONEST question:

Do you have a proven content strategy and a performance driven culture that supports one?

I don’t hire people off interviews anymore.

Cause anyone can say the right things for 60 minutes.

Everyone’s a rockstar.
Everyone’s “done that before.”
Everyone has a portfolio they may or may not have actually created.

So now I ask to SEE THEM in action before they get the job.

I give them real work, real expectations, and a clear deadline....and pay them for it.

For the marketing roles we hire for (Content managers, podcast managers, social media managers, video editors, etc.) we often run a paid assessment.

Example for a podcast manager.  They'll do the following:

-Trim a long-form video into shorts
-Write the hook, headline, and post copy
-Make a quick thumbnail
-Lightlly edit the video
-Create show notes

We review the work and then they walk us through why they did what they did.

I don’t just wanna see the output.
I wanna see how their mind works.

This gives us solid insights and allows us to see how they actually perform in the role. 

It's stuff you'd never get from just an interview.

It doesn't tell the whole story, and it's not a 100% accurate in predicting job success. But it does help shape who we select and it's worked pretty dang well so far. 

(And yes, we still interview too)

2019: I questioned if my content was "Good enough" 
2020: I questioned if my content was "Good enough" 
2021: I questioned if my content was "Good enough" 
2022: I questioned if my content was "Good enough" 
2023: I questioned if my content was "Good enough" 
2024: I questioned if my content was "Good enough"  
2025: I questioned if my content was "Good enough" 

And in 2026, I will do the same. 

I actually think this is part of what keeps you humble and driven as a creator. 

It doesn't mean I'm not confident or convicted, I certainly am.

It means I have a healthy dose of criticism for my own content because I want it to be highly valuable for my audience and clients. 

It DOES NOT mean that I use that as an excuse to not publish content. 
(Perfectionism is insecurity negotiating a delay)

It means that even when I am questioning my own content, I still post that s#%$! 

The CEO of Nvidia was on Joe Rogan and even he said every day he feels like it could all be lost if he doesn't work hard and stay grounded.  He's "Never had it all figured out" and almost went bankrupt and lost the company several times. 

That's what you need when you're building a personal brand. (And a business)

The moment you think you're "The man" or "The woman" or that you "Made it", you're FINISHED. 

Be confident in YOU. 
But also realize that you will always have alot to improve and work on. 

If you're not out here turning your company into a mini media company so you can win attention and earn trust daily--I think you are missing one of the biggest opportunities out there right now. 

But to do that you gotta be willing to get past your own self doubt, insecurities, and limiting beliefs first. 

This is for YOU.

The CEO with a big message and a even bigger impact… who hasn’t started showing up publicly.  Yet.

I want all of you to look at your last 20 posts on LinkedIn.

And ask yourself this: 

If you sent those posts to 100 prospects (dream clients)… would at least 15 of those posts make them say:

“Whoa… that’s a blind spot we have that's worth solving.”
“Never thought of our problem that way, this is really helpful.”
“This is a great strategy or tactic we can we implement today.”
"When we're ready to make this change, we're calling these people!" 

If not…

Your content (strategy) is broken and misaligned.  And it's highly unlikely you'll convert. 

Because THAT is the stuff that inspires action from your buyers, especially in B2B.

That gets people reaching out, visiting your site, and booking calls.

Not the “going through the motions” posts.  Or. the "We're just trying to stay active" posts. 

So… go look at your last 15- 20 posts. 
Be brutally honest.
Break them down.

Would YOU reach out to YOU?  👀

Are you educating and inspiring?
Are you shifting perspective with a unique POV?
Are you giving strategic/tactical advice?

Or are you just posting…

Founder: “How many leads will we generate in the first 3–6 months of doing organic content marketing?” 

Here’s the honest answer: 

It’s impossible to tell

That’s like asking:

“What’s the exact price of Bitcoin going to be in 3 months?
Or "What’s the price of Tesla stock in 6 months?”

Not even the best investor on the planet can predict that with certainty.

But what we CAN do is look at the macro picture & key indicators:

For investments/assets, it might be: institutional adoption, business trajectory, technology, sentiment, etc.

For content marketing it’s the following: 

Do you think it’s valuable to be in front of your ideal customers every single day?

Do you think it helps to become the most trusted company in your category because you share what others keep hidden?

Do you think it’s smart to constantly share customer success stories and real results?

Do you think prospects might trust you more if you solve their problems for free online before they ever talk to sales?

If all your dream customers were sitting in a conference room, would it be a good idea or a bad idea to go speak on that stage?

LinkedIn + content is that stage. Every. Single. Day.

Can I tell you exactly how many leads you’ll get from that in 90 days?

Amazon is brilliant.

They did something most big companies were too slow (or too arrogant) to do:

👉 They became a media company.
👉 They produced a TON of content. (Amazon Prime)
👉 They realized if they won people’s attention, they’d win their loyalty for life.

The same thing has been happening in B2B for years… but most 7-8 figure CEOs still haven’t figured it out.

It's not a 30-day quick win, "Get us leads tomorrow" tactic
It's a CHESS MOVE

It's a long-term, brand-building play that helps companies dominate entire industries.

And look at Amazon’s content strategy closely…
Their content is NOT:

“Here’s where the Amazon corporate team is going!”
“Here’s a new feature we launched!”
“Here’s our Q3 update!”

Because nobody cares about that and everyone would instantly un-subscribe to Amazon Prime. 

Instead, they build world-class shows and films like:

🎬 The Tomorrow War
🎬 Jack Ryan
🎬 Fallout
🎬 The Boys
🎬 Air

It's one of the big reasons we've produced the following each year:

-Edu-tainment videos
-Behind the scenes content 
-Educational text posts and emails
-Podcast/Show (Founder Talk)
-Events (Live and virtual)

And this has been a massive driver in my company's year-over-year growth

Michael Jordan was an a$$hole.  
At least that’s how a lot of his teammates felt.

But they also won 6 championships in 10 years.
So… I guess it worked.

Was his leadership style intense?  Absolutely.

Winning mattered to him more than comfort.

And if you weren’t committed at that level, you didn’t last very long.

But if you were committed?

He pushed you.
Pulled more out of you than you thought you had.

And elevated you to a level you probably wouldn’t have reached on your own.

This came up on a recent Founder Talk Podcast episode in conversation with Jennifer Guzman, and she explained it perfectly.

BJ Armstrong once got asked whether Michael Jordan was a nice guy or an a$$hole.

His answer?

“He was an a$$hole—because he knew he had to be in order to get things done.”

Then there’s that famous MJ clip where he talks about leadership being a sacrifice.

About pulling people forward when they don’t want to be pulled.  Being on the front lines.

Taking the hits your team isn’t willing or able to take.
And then he says something that most leaders are afraid to say out loud:

“This is how I lead. This is how I play.
 If you don’t want to play that way, don’t play that way.”

At the end of the scene, he gets emotional.
You see the human side of it.

The toll.
The beatings.
The weight of carrying it all.

Did he regret it?
No.

Great leadership isn’t about being liked.
It’s about standards.
Commitment.
And being willing to go first and take the hits, even when it costs you.
