The Linux world is in uproar over Systemd adding support for age-verification-related data.
And the backlash is more than justified.

This is not really about one field in one project. It is about moving age verification into the OS layer, into the plumbing. Once it lives there, it stops being a website annoyance and starts becoming infrastructure.

Please note that when governments demand “age verification” for children, that does not mean only children get checked. It means EVERYONE has to identify themselves first, so the system can determine who is a child and who is not. You cannot enforce age gates only on minors. You enforce them by making all users prove their age and/or identity.

In Europe, the direction of travel is obvious: tie this to the EU Digital Identity Wallet model and turn identity into the access layer for online life.

So the threat model is not “protecting kids.”
The threat model is:
-everyone must identify themselves
-the OS becomes a broker for identity claims
-government-controlled digital ID becomes normalized for ordinary online activities
That way systems built for “child safety” become systems for surveillance and control. Just look at the number of people that get jailed for social media posts. Do you think that there will be more or less people jailed for wrongthink after that?

That is why Linux users are angry.
Because once age verification reaches the OS layer, it is no longer just about websites or apps. It becomes part of the foundation of computing. And once that foundation is tied to a government-controlled digital IDs, privacy is no longer the default. Permission is. And permissions can also be denied. This is how you transform rights we have today into permissioned and conditional activities.

The government has no business forcing operating systems to become age-enforcement infrastructure. Because “age verification for kids” is just the sales pitch. In practice, it means ID for everyone. And lifetime linkability and conditional permissions.
