IRS Direct File will not be available in Filing Season 2026.

The IRS Direct File service, a pilot program launched in 2024 to allow taxpayers to file directly with the IRS, will not be offered during the 2026 filing season, and its future status is uncertain.The pilot project was initiated to provide a direct filing option, bypassing third-party commercial tax software.

In the 2024, 140,803 taxpayers successfully filed returns through Direct File. This number increased to 296,531 in 2025, according to a report cited by the Center for Taxpayer Rights.

These participation figures are a small fraction of the 150 to 160 million returns filed annually in the U.S

IRS Annual Maintenance period (called a "blackout") for E-Filling Returns is still not announced.

The IRS normally shuts down their e-file servers in November and December to prepare for the upcoming tax year but still exact date is not announced by IRS till this post is written.

you can typically e-file the currently due tax year and two prior years, except during an IRS closure. For example, once the IRS has opened e-filing for tax year 2025 returns in January 2026, you'll be able to e-file 2024, 2023 and 2022 otherwise you will not be able to e-file during maintenance period.

It is equally applicable to Individual and Business returns.

So complete your e-file assignments as soon as possible.
