• Improved functionality and the overall look and feel of Jamaica’s Open Data Portal by upgrading to Drupal 10 and converting the website to utilize a REACT front end

• Designed custom APIs to support both mobile applications as well as desktop users.

• Utilized Amazon Web-services including VPC, Route 53, RDS, EC2, ECS/EKS Container, S3, CloudWatch, Cloud front, Snowflake to architect end-to-end solutions for clients.

• Leveraged business intelligence tools including extraction, transforming, and loading to process large sets of data including financial data and writing APIs for data communication.

• Integrated version control systems with GitHub and managing website deployment using
Drush.

SlashRoots Foundation

The SlashRoots Foundation designs digital services and tools to transform the relationship between Caribbean governments and citizens. We help governments and other social impact organizations achieve their missions and empower communities by better using technology and data.

At SlashRoots I designed and developed an Agricultural API(Application Programming Interface) together with the Rural Agricultural Development Agency(RADA) at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture & Fisheries. This API provides a simple way for software applications to access and utilize data from two multiple databases that sit within the Ministry.

I also designed and launched an innovation fellowship initiative that seeks to make Caribbean governments more open, participatory and agile. The fellowship embeds teams of technologists within government agencies to drive a more open, participatory and agile approach to designing and delivering public services.

Within the course of 6 months, a viable product was designed and developed to combat praedial larceny in Jamaica through the use of mobile technology. Varun lead the software development team through the process of learning from and designing for stakeholders in the agricultural sector.  

The design process lead the team to many features that are unique to the context of the developing world. Limited internet connectivity and the proliferation of cellular phones in Jamaica lead to software architecture that uses SMS messages to query and report from a custom built API.

The main resources in this case came through strategic partnerships with government entities who want to be more open and participatory and don't mind thinking hard about what public service delivery can look like. These were innovative teams within entities such as the Rural Agricultural Development Agency(RADA) and the Agricultural Marketing Information Division (AMID) at The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Agriculture (MICAF). In addition the Jamaica Agricultural Society, Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Mona School of Business at the University of the West Indies played major roles in facilitating this work.
