AI safety report: nobody gets an A

A recent AI Safety Index assessed 8 major AI model developers across 35 indicators in 6 areas. The headline: no company scores above C+ overall.

Only 3 of 7 companies (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google DeepMind) report any testing for dangerous capabilities like bio or cyber terrorism risks. And even those efforts lack clear standards.

Anthropic scored highest partly because they don't train on user data, lead in alignment research and operate as a Public Benefit Corporation.

Chinese firms Zhipu.AI and DeepSeek received failing grades, though they operate under stricter national AI regulations which makes self-governance less prominent.

The gap between capability development and safety practices keeps growing. AI systems now write, code, search and act on our behalf. But most companies building them can't demonstrate concrete safety processes or clear thresholds for when to pause deployment.

As MIT professor Max Tegmark put it: the purpose isn't to shame anyone. It's to show where things actually stand.

The Euro Area now leads with over $7.1 trillion in central bank assets. China and the United States follow close behind.

What's interesting: the size of these balance sheets tells you how much a country intervenes in its own economy through quantitative easing, currency pegs, or reserve accumulation.

Some numbers that stand out:
➩ India: $911 billion
➩ Brazil: $898 billion
➩ Saudi Arabia: $515 billion

These three alone hold more than $2.3 trillion combined. A decade ago, that would have been unthinkable.

Countries with large central bank reserves have more influence over global trade and currency markets. They have more firepower when things go wrong.
