Claude Code, Claude Skills and MCP have entered the imsg group chat with friends. I know it can feel overwhelming to get started - here are a few quick ways to get comfortable if you're just starting out with AI:

1. Start by connecting any existing tools you're already using to Claude (e.g. Google Drive, Google Calendar, GMail, Slack, Canva, Fulfil, etc.).

2. Ask questions, analyze data and build reports based on your connected data sources. 

3. Start asking software providers you use or are considering using if they have an MCP (this is the USB port equivalent that lets LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude connect with other software).

4. Research the concept of Claude Skills and identify a task that you or your team frequently performs where you'd like a standardized output.

My resume keeps getting rejected by the ATS.

I hear this every week.

And every week, I have to tell them the same thing:

The ATS isn't rejecting you.
Hiring managers are.

Let me explain.  
Here's how the process actually works:

1. You submit your resume
2. ATS scans and parses it (extracts text, categorizes info)
3. ATS ranks resumes based on keyword match and relevance
4. Humans review the top-ranked resumes
5. Humans decide who gets interviews
6. Notice where the rejection actually happens?

Step 5.
Not step 2.

The ATS is a sorting tool. Not a rejection machine.

It doesn't "throw out" your resume.
It surfaces the most relevant ones to the top.

If your resume isn't getting through, it's not because the ATS "can't read it."

It's because:
❌ Your resume didn't match the job requirements closely enough ❌ Your keywords weren't aligned with what they're searching for ❌ Your achievements weren't compelling enough to stand out ❌ Your positioning was too generic to rank highly

Then a human looked at the top 20-30 resumes, and yours wasn't one of them.

↪️Here's what job seekers get wrong:

They think: "If I just format it right, I'll beat the ATS."
But formatting isn't your problem.

Relevance is.

So what actually works?

✅ Mirror their exact language: If they say "P&L management," use "P&L management", not "budget oversight"

✅ Lead with measurable, relevant achievements: Not responsibilities. Impact. Numbers. Results that match what they need.

✅ Tailor your summary to the specific role: Make it crystal clear in the first 3 lines why you're the perfect fit

✅ Use their priority keywords throughout: Not stuffed. Woven naturally into your achievements and experience.

✅ Make your value obvious: The hiring manager reviewing the top resumes should think: "We need to talk to this person"

ATS isn't your enemy.
It's just sorting.

The hiring manager is the one deciding.

And if your resume isn't relevant, clear, and compelling enough to make them stop and say "yes", that's not the ATS's fault.

Stop optimizing for the robot.
Start optimizing for the human.

Because that's who's actually rejecting you.

Each week, I review 10+ resumes.

9 of them could've been written by the same person.

"Dynamic professional." "Proven track record." "Leveraged synergies."

Somehow, every candidate "spearheaded cross-functional initiatives" and "leveraged synergistic collaboration to drive transformative results."

Even the intern who answered phones.

ChatGPT has entered the chat. And it's making everyone sound like a corporate buzzword generator.

AI makes resumes more polished and somehow, way more boring. 😴

Stop overthinking your resume!

I hear this advice all the time.

(Right. Your resume is just one piece of the job search puzzle.)

But here's what people forget:

It's your first impression.
And you don't get a second one.

I see job seekers obsessing over the wrong things:

❌ Should it be 1 page or 2 pages?
❌ What design elements make it stand out?
❌ How do I hack the ATS system?

Meanwhile, they're ignoring what actually matters:

3 questions your resume MUST answer in 7 seconds:

✅ Can recruiters identify your unique value instantly? Not buried under fluff. Not hidden in paragraph 3. Right there. Top of the page. Impossible to miss.

✅ Is it relevant to the job you're applying for? Or does it look like a generic resume sent to 50 different roles?

✅ Is it easy to read? Can someone skim it fast and know exactly what you offer?

If your resume fails any of these, it doesn't matter how perfect the design is.

Because the hiring manager already moved on.

Does your resume pass the 7-second test, or are you still overthinking the wrong things?

You can have the best experience in the world.

But if your resume looks generic, you'll get generic results.

Nobody buys the product.
They buy the packaging.
They buy the story.
They buy how it makes them feel.

Two VPs. Same 15 years of experience.

One leads with vague buzzwords.
One tells a clear, compelling story with measurable impact.

Which one gets the call?

Your experience is valuable.
But only if you know how to package it.

Is your resume selling the product, or the experience?

I reached out to a VP I worked with last year.

He told me he'd secured a good role after we worked together.

But I'm looking again, he said. For something better.

Here's what was different this time:
No panic. No desperation. No questioning his worth.

He was confident.
Because he learned something the first time around:
The importance of presentation and positioning.

Last year, when we first met, he was stuck.

15 years at the same company. Promotions. Big projects. Solid results.

But after layoffs, he applied to 150+ roles.
Zero callbacks.

'My work should speak for itself,' he told me then. I paused.
'It does. To people who already know you.'

But hiring managers at new companies? 
They have 6 seconds and 200 resumes.

🎯Your work isn't speaking. It's silent.

We rebuilt his resume and LinkedIn.
Not with buzzwords.
With his actual story.

Clear positioning. Measurable impact. A narrative that made hiring managers stop and think: 'We need this person.'

He is employed again!

Fast forward to now:

He's not scrambling.
He's strategic.
He knows his value. 
He knows how to communicate it. 
He knows his materials are already working for him.

That's the difference.

Your hard work got you here.
But if you're ready for what's next, you need to learn how to tell your story strategically.

A well-crafted resume and LinkedIn profile don't just open doors.
