A shepherd doesn’t herd sheep anymore.

Twenty copies.

That’s how many books, Mike Nelligan, a friend just bought to give away as stocking stuffers this Christmas.

Not because I asked.
Not because there was a discount.
Not because he wanted to be nice.

Because he believed the ideas inside might matter to twenty people he cares about.

After such a thoughtful gesture, I think: 

How many people believed in your work enough to put their reputation on it?

When someone buys twenty copies of anything - a book, a course, a product-they’re not making a purchase.

They’re making a statement:
“This changed something for me. And I think it might change something for you.”

We wrote men@pause: Life 2.0 because we saw men struggling with transitions in silence. The book wasn’t supposed to be a bestseller. It was supposed to start conversations.

Turns out, when you give people permission to talk about the hard stuff, they want to share that permission with others.

The People Who Jump

Legend has it that General Eisenhower approached a young paratrooper before D-Day.

The soldier was loading up. Combat jump. 101st Airborne. Into occupied France.

Eisenhower asked: “Son, you must like jumping out of perfectly good airplanes?”

The paratrooper looked at him and said: “Heck no, sir. I just like hanging out with people who do.”

That’s the thing about service nobody tells you.

You don’t join because you’re fearless.
You join because you want to be around people who are.

The valor isn’t just in the jump.
It’s in choosing to stand next to someone who will.

I served in the Army. Not because I had all the answers. Not because I was the toughest or the bravest or the most certain.

I served because I wanted to be in a room—or a foxhole, or a mess hall, or a transport—with people who understood something I needed to learn.

That when it matters most, you show up.
That your word means everything.
That the person next to you is more important than your comfort.

On Veterans Day, we don’t celebrate our service.

I celebrate theirs.

The people who taught me what it means to jump when the plane door opens.
The people who showed me what courage looks like when nobody’s watching.
The people who reminded me that you don’t have to be fearless to be faithful.

You just have to be willing to hang out with people who do it anyway.

Your clinical excellence is expected. It’s table stakes. What’s unexpected - what builds actual authority - is when you show up in rooms where surgeons ‘aren’t supposed to be.’

Boardrooms. 
Podcasts. 
Stages. 

The OR is your arena. But your reputation is built in the rooms you’re not expected to enter.

After 15 years helping surgeons digitize trust and monetize their reputation, here’s what I hold to be true:

1. The reputation monetization isn’t in being a KOL. It’s in being a DOL.
Most surgeons still dream of being selected as a Key Opinion Leader by a medtech company.

That’s renting influence.
A (DOL) Digital Opinion Leader owns it.

KOLs wait to be chosen.
DOLs build their own platform.

KOLs are controlled by company messaging.
DOLs control the narrative.

2.	Surgeons rely on the least qualified person to handle their digital presence.

And this is exactly why everyone is indifferent.

The practice manager doesn’t understand thought leadership.

The local agency doesn’t understand surgeon culture.

Medtech isn’t looking out for your individual authority.

So surgeons outsource their reputation to whoever has time - not whoever has strategy.

And they get crappy social media instead of digital thought leadership.

Posting isn’t positioning.
Activity isn’t authority.
The surgeons who win will understand the difference.
These aren’t popular opinions.

But in 15 years, I’ve never once had a practice manager ask me what we’ve learned about building surgeon authority.

Only once has a medtech company ask how they could help their surgeons become Digital Opinion Leaders.

Nobody is looking out for your digital thought leadership.

God in the Space Between My Children


My son is Catholic.

Mass on Sundays.
Rosary on his nightstand.
The faith of his father’s grandfather’s grandfather.

My oldest daughter is Church of Christ.

Scripture as anchor.
Tradition as compass.
The certainty her husband was raised in.

The first time I visited my wife’s Pentecostal church, I genuflected. Everyone thought I was slain in the Spirit. I just didn’t know whether to duck or dance.

And then there’s Sierra.

The middle daughter.

The one who burned the map.

She deconstructed everything her brother and sister kept.

The hymns.
The rituals.
The certainty.
The comfort.

I used to think I failed her.

One child got my roots.
One child got her mother’s.
One child got… questions.

Everyone warned her about the slippery slope.

But nobody warned me what it’s like to sit at a dinner table with three children -

And realize they’re all finding the same God through completely different doors.

My son kneels.
My oldest daughter studies.
My middle daughter wrestles.

And somehow -

They all arrive.

Maybe that’s grace.

Not one path.

Just one destination with infinite entry points.

I didn’t fail Sierra.

I gave her permission to find her own way in.

I scrolled through 50 orthopedic surgeon LinkedIn profiles this week. 47 of them posted announcements and information. 3 of them posted ideas and built authority.

Guess which ones get media calls when journalists need expert commentary?

Most surgeons treat LinkedIn like a digital CV. They announce conference attendance. They share journal articles. They post about new equipment in their OR. This is social media behavior—passive, forgettable, indistinguishable from every other surgeon in their specialty.

Digital thought leadership looks completely different.

The surgeon who gets quoted in The New York Times isn’t posting about attending AAOS. She’s posting her contrarian take on why the standard approach to ACL reconstruction is outdated and what elite athletes actually need.

The surgeon who appears on The Joe Rogan show isn’t sharing someone else’s research. He’s sharing his framework for why desk workers are destroying their spines and what actually prevents surgery.

The surgeon whose opinion gets sought by health reporters isn’t announcing he learned a new technique. He’s posting ideas about emerging trends that make journalists want his perspective on record.

Here’s what shifts: 

Announcements make you visible. 
Ideas make you quotable. 
Information makes you helpful. 
Authority makes you the first call.

The Soldier/

Jacob David George, 32, survived the war. The fog of war took him at his home in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He served three tours as a U.S. Army Special Operations combat engineer with Operation Enduring Freedom. After returning from Afghanistan, he recorded an album, "Soldier's Heart."

The Poet/

William Cowper, the English poet (1774) who wrote the hymn "God Moves in a Mysterious Way," struggled all his life with depression. One day, Mr. Cowper called for a carriage and ordered the driver to take him to the Ouse River, three miles away, where he planned to kill himself. 

The driver of the carriage sensed the state of sadness Mr. Cowper displayed. He said a quick prayer for guidance and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw a rolling fog ahead in the distance. The carriage driver purposely lost his way in the fog, jogging up one road and down another as Cowper fell into a deep sleep. Several hours passed, the driver going in circles, letting his passenger rest. Finally he returned Mr. Cowper to his home.

Mr. Cowper awakened and asked why they were back home?
The carriage driver said, "Got lost in the fog, sir. Sorry."

Mr. Cowper went inside, and pondered how he had been spared from self-destruction. That same evening in 1774, age forty-three, wrote his autobiographical hymn, "God Moves in a Mysterious Way" sung in churches across the world today.

Recognizing the need to broaden its scope of design expertise, Jenkins purchased one of the region’s most respected small architectural firms, Facilities Solutions Group, in 2011.  Known for their precision in designing intensely complex facilities for scientific, military, and life sciences clients around the world, Facilities Solutions Group had the added advantage of an impeccable project history that extends back into the late 1990s.  The name of the merged firm, Bancroft Architects + Engineers, reflects both the legacy of the original company with the historical connection to the Navy and Naval Academy as well as the full range of services on offer.

Prior to the SEAL Teams, it was also an honor to serve in the US Marine Corps…



After Regis Jesuit High School, I attended Regis College (what is now, Regis University).

I always wanted to be a pilot, but we did not have the funds to attend Embry-Riddle or any other fine aviation universities.

So, during my freshman year at Regis College, I banged the yellow pages and called every military service and the Coast Guard (they were part of the US Department of Transportation at the time) to figure out how I could serve and lead, but also be a pilot.

Since I had a scholarship to attend Regis College (translate, I received a small stipend to swim there, but 99% of my costs were taken care of by the fact that our dear mother worked there and part of her compensation was full tuition at both Regis Jesuit High School and Regis College; thanks again, MOM!), I never considered any ROTC programs… 

Full disclosure, with my focus on having fun in high school, I don’t think I would have been eligible for an ROTC/NROTC scholarship…



Well, the summation of all of those conversations with the military and Coast Guard recruiters was that only one service would give me a “Flight School Guarantee” if I attended United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School (OCS) during the summers while I was attending Regis College, and if my eyes were still good. 

I would have a guaranteed flight school slot after college graduation and after "The Basic School."

Wait, leading Marines and serving as a pilot? 

What could be better?

So, I began my journey earning the eagle, globe, and anchor by attending the "Platoon Leaders Course, Junior Course" at OCS at Camp Upshur in Quantico, Virginia forty-three (43) short years ago…

After graduating from that training with a shaved head and my forest-green t-shirt with large white letters on the front, "USMC," I took a bus to visit my younger brother during his "Plebe Summer" at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland…



And, that starts another story for another time…

You have always been a huge part of my personal and professional life. 

I have no idea where these two Marines are today, but Staff Sergeant Campos and Corporal Eshelman left an indelible mark on my life.

I Help Grow Companies | Navy SEAL Veteran

The greatest servant leader I have ever known would have turned 25 today…



Today would have been our daughter Leslie’s 25th birthday. 

We miss her beyond words.

We are proud of the servant leader she was and the huge heart she shared with the world. 

Leslie (our “Lulu”) had a remarkable gift for giving to others, even from a young age.



When Leslie was in high school, she spent a summer in Cambodia working at an orphanage and teaching English to children in the slums. 

She came home forever changed, telling us how those kids gave her perspective on gratitude and love. 

I remember the glow on her face when she talked about the little ones she taught. 

She worked tirelessly and loved those children deeply, reminding us what true servant leadership looks like.



Back home, Leslie continued to lead with her heart. 

Her favorite high school class was the peer mentoring program, where she worked one-on-one with developmentally disabled classmates. 

She made everyone feel valued. 

Watching her befriend and uplift her classmates taught me so much about kindness.



Leslie’s compassion didn’t stop there…

She also volunteered at the VA hospital, spending her Sundays listening to veterans’ stories and bringing them snacks or a warm blanket. 

She had a soft spot for those who served our country. 

Seeing our teenage daughter chatting and laughing with an elderly veteran, calling him “sir” and thanking him for his service, remains one of my fondest memories. 

Her empathy bridged generations.

As she did for everyone she met, she made these heroes feel seen and appreciated.



The impact Lulu had on people around her was extraordinary. 
Her high school dance team teammates still call her their “guardian angel,” carrying her strength and remembering the good times they shared. 

It’s clear that her light lives on in so many hearts.

Lulu lived her 18 years on Earth with a purpose: to love and serve others unconditionally. 

She reminded us that true leadership isn’t about titles or accolades, but about lifting others up. 

Even though she’s no longer physically with us (we lost her in 2019), I feel her presence in the lessons she left behind. 

She continues to inspire us every day to be better, love harder, and give more freely.



If Leslie’s story teaches us anything, it’s to lead with love. 

In her memory, I challenge all of us to be a little kinder, lend a helping hand, and live with an open, generous heart. 

I know she’s smiling down on us, proud and encouraging us to carry her legacy forward.



Happy 25th Birthday in Heaven, sweet princess.

My brother, Lawrence Kough, is one of the best warrior gentlemen among gentlemen on the planet. 

Not only is he a great husband, father, son, uncle, and brother, but he is also anyone’s best friend who knows him.

I don’t mean, “bestie...”

What I mean is that when someone is in need, or just wants someone with whom to run things by, he is one of the best people with whom to do that, whether or not you are personal friends with him.

I could write a book about my brother (don’t tempt me), but I will keep this short…

Lawrence walks in others’ shoes before he speaks, and cares about people to their deepest core.

He is a true servant leader.



Throw in too that he has been married forever…

and he has two awesome daughters and a son-in-law,

and he is crushing it as a Delta Airlines Captain,

and he was the United States Naval Academy’s (USNA's) first All-American in Water Polo (2 years),

and he swam in US Olympic Trials,

and he flew not just the S-3 Viking, but retired as a Navy Captain in his US Navy career as an F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot,

and served as the first (plank owner) Commanding Officer of a reserve F/A-18 Super Hornet squadron,

and I could go on and on…



Lawrence, I love you. I am so grateful you are my brother and best friend.

Our Dad went to US Navy Recruit Training in San Diego and then went on to become a Dental Technician in the Navy.

The Navy figured out our Dad could play some basketball…

So, he was in a basketball uniform more often than his Navy uniform as their regional Navy basketball team travelled and played junior colleges and universities around the country on behalf of Navy Recruiting.



All that said, the most important person in the photograph is on the far right, the Saint of our family, our dear mother.

Thanks, Mom, for putting up with the three of us, and for doing such a fantastic job of raising Lawrence and me (with Dad).

Mom, you are the best.

You are not the kind of “best” that everyone else talks about.

You are the actual best!

What an incredible experience at the Joint Forces Forum had by all! 

Honored to have attended this recent event co-hosted by the Veteran Institute For Procurement (VIP) and the National Veteran Owned Business Association (NaVOBA).

Truly inspired, I remain.

The forum brought together veteran-owned businesses and corporate leaders for powerful, execution-oriented, opportunity networking and learning. 

We literally sat face-to-face with decision makers who could "green light" contracts across every commercial product or service discipline. 

It was amazing.



We kicked off with an awards reception celebrating veteran entrepreneurs and their corporate partners, followed by a day of dynamic sessions and opportunity-surfacing networking.

The energy was incredible, and the camaraderie was unmatched.

We saw firsthand how the forum sparked new connections and actual contracts that help veteran-owned businesses thrive.



Shoutout to Barbara Ashe, National Director (on the right) and Patty A. Brown, VP of Operations (pictured left) of VIP for their leadership and unwavering commitment to empowering veteran entrepreneurs. 

Their vision and dedication truly made this forum possible and impactful.

Watching both of them receive awards that night was more than icing on the cake!



Outstanding organizations like VIP and NaVOBA are crucial in helping veteran-owned businesses succeed in both federal contracting and commercial markets. 

Proud to be part of this journey.

This is not clickbait…



It is important to stay in touch with great people in your life, period.



While nurturing some healthcare construction relationships in Washington, D.C. recently, one of our biggest opportunities came from my dear friend, John Sullivan.

John put us in front of a group that has over 1,000 healthcare centers across the country…

Thank you, John (understatement).



I met John in 2014 at the GI Film Festival, where he was a producer of the powerful film, "Fort Bliss."

We both had projects screening at the festival, but his deservedly won!

We bonded quickly over our shared love of storytelling with purpose. 

What I didn’t know then was how wide-ranging and inspiring his journey really was.

John grew up on the East Coast, went to St. Albans and Hamilton College, and carries a deep legacy of service.

His grandfather served as the 49th Secretary of the Navy, Secretary John L. Sullivan, under Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and President Harry S. Truman. 



As a filmmaker, he’s brought stories of resilience and courage to life. 

All of his films speak to the power of the human spirit. 

But John didn’t stop at creative success. 

He also became an entrepreneur and, most remarkably, a Washington, D.C. police officer...  choosing to serve his community from the front lines.

His career spans award-winning films, wellness ventures, and patrol shifts. 

Through it all, he’s remained grounded, generous, and deeply committed to making a difference. 

I’ve learned a lot from John.



Here’s to a friend who leads with heart, adapts with courage, and lives a life that reminds us it’s never too late to serve in new ways!



So, why is Michelle Monaghan in this photo? Ms. Monaghan starred in the aforementioned film, "Fort Bliss." 

John was kind enough to introduce me to this brilliant actor. 

You may have seen her in the most recent, "White Lotus."

She was awesome in that, too.



Lastly, with John, it was great to put him on a text string with two of my other favorite St. Albans School (D.C.) alumni, Kennon Artis and Kevin Zimmerman.

P.S.:  I would have put up a more recent photo, but we cannot put our last photo of each other at his club, the Cosmos Club, on the socials.  Lastly, you may or may not have seen John on the hit TV show, "Hawaii Five-O!"...

Someone asked me recently why my company is named, TRIDENT 11...



Well, here is the short version...

TRIDENT 11 is a representation of four of the most important parts of my life.

My children...



There are some other assumptions that are secondary to why TRIDENT 11 is TRIDENT 11, but the root is the four awesome children I raised (no, not all by myself).



The simpler assumptions are:

TRIDENT came from the US Navy SEAL breast insignia from my service in the Teams…

or,

TRIDENT came from the trident that is at the top of the United States Naval Academy crest, the crest of my alma mater.



Although those assumptions may have had some influences, "TRIDENT" represents three of my four children we raised, and the "11" represents our late daughter, Lulu, in heaven.



Why the 11? Lulu was born on November 11, 2000. 

While Lulu was with us throughout her life on earth, the date, 11/11, and time, 11:11, have always been a sign to our family in honor of Lulu. 

Our family members would consistently reach out to Lulu, not just on her birthday, but also whenever they saw 11:11 on the clock, wherever they/we were throughout the world.

Although we are not numerologists, 11 has always made us think about and honor Lulu, and her boundless love for others.



TRIDENT, at yet another elevated level in my heart, also represents the Holy Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Adding the 11 to TRIDENT is a representation to me of Lulu's beautiful place in God's arms in heaven.



Well, there you have it!



Hence, TRIDENT 11.
