Some of the highest-paying jobs in tech right now aren't in engineering. 

They're writers.

The premium skill isn't coding. It's communication. 

I'm seeing companies aggressively hiring people who can think clearly, shape narrative, and translate complexity into something humans actually understand.

Netflix has a Director of Communications role posted for $775K. 
Adobe is hiring AI storytellers. 
Anthropic tripled the size of its communications team last year.  
OpenAI has multiple communications roles with salaries over $400K.

I don't think that's random. As AI automates execution, the bottleneck shifts upstream.

The leverage moves to:
🧠 clear thinking
🧠 persuasive storytelling
🧠 emotional intelligence
🧠 creative problem solving

In other words...good ol' human skills.

Technical capability is quickly becoming table stakes for everyone in an org.

Interpretation, context, and narrative are your strategic advantages.

GTM leaders are showing each other their AI projects like kids at a show-and-tell. I mean that as a compliment.

Yesterday I sat in a room in Seattle with a small group of Pavilion members (shoutout to Matt Bernardy for leading this meetup). Head of Sales and Marketing, fractionals, and a CEO. All in-seat operators, running numbers, accountable for outcomes. .

We came to talk about how we're using AI in our jobs. For ourselves and for our teams.

Two things became clear fast.

1) Most companies don't have a single owner of their AI strategy. No one person is accountable for how AI gets adopted across the org. The result is predictable. Every team picks its own tools. Data lives in silos. Call transcripts in one place, repos in another, customer intel in a third. Security gaps open up. And worse, there's no internal leverage. No compounding.

The companies doing this well right now are driving it from the top down. Centralizing data, tooling, and standards so the whole org benefits, not just the individual who found a clever prompt.

The second thing was more fun.

2) People pulled up their laptops and showed what they'd built. Websites. Video edits. Vibe-coded prototypes. Internal agentic workflows. Nearly everyone was using Claude Code or Claude Cowork. Giddy. Proud. Eager to share.

The issue though...most of what people built was useful to them, but not everyone else.

People are building these small tools, tailored to their specific problems, that make them dramatically more productive.

The competitive advantage isn't the tool - it's the operator who knows how to combine tools with judgment and context to solve real problems.

For example, Ultrarunners don't win races with the best shoes. They win by knowing exactly which gear works for their body, on that terrain, in those conditions. The runner who tests and dials in their kit across hundreds of training miles has a massive edge over the one who shows up with brand-new equipment on race day.

Needless to say, the gap between operators who are building and using their own AI toolkit and those who are waiting for permission is getting wider every week.

Most organisations don’t get stuck because they lack ideas or effort.

That pattern shows up differently depending on the environment.

In airlines, travel platforms, and hotels, growth can look healthy on paper but customer acquisition becomes expensive, data stays fragmented, and engagement drops once the transaction is over.

In large organisations moving to cloud, progress slows because decisions feel high-risk. Modernisation starts, but uncertainty around cost, architecture, and long-term impact delays real momentum.

With AI initiatives, the challenge is rarely the technology itself. Teams know AI matters, but struggle to translate it into clear business outcomes, ownership, and execution that actually moves something forward.

Different contexts. Same underlying issue.

When clarity is missing, progress slows, even with strong teams and effort.

Progress returns once the real constraint is clear and decisions are acted on.

What most people miss about this tradition?

The oranges aren't just thrown randomly. They're offered with intention. With hope that someone will notice. That connection happens first.

Business works the same way.

You can't force someone to buy from you. But you can build a relationship so strong they want to work with you.

I've closed more deals over coffee conversations than polished pitch decks. Why? Because people buy from people they trust. And trust comes from relationship, not transactions.

Three things I've learned:

1. Listen more than you pitch
2. Care about their success before your commission
3. Show up consistently, not when you need something

To all the singles out there: May you find your match this year.

To those in relationships: May you 10x your chemistry in 2026.

And to everyone building a business: Remember that relationships always come first.

The sale is just what happens after.

Then silence for weeks.

Meanwhile, you're the most captive audience imaginable. You've already committed. You're thinking about the trip, planning, researching, anticipating.

And your airline? Nowhere.

Then you land. Within an hour, you've switched to hotels, restaurants, ground transport. The airline becomes a memory.

There are two massive windows most airlines ignore:

1. Between booking and boarding (weeks of engagement potential)

2. Right after landing (when passengers need local context)

Both windows are wide open. Both largely untouched.

I work with airlines and travel platforms on growth optimization. This gap comes up constantly.

It's not because they don't care. It's genuinely hard. You'd need to know where the passenger is, what language they speak, what they actually need in that moment.

But it's solvable.

The airlines that figure this out won't just send better emails. They'll become useful during the parts of travel that matter most.

Acquisition gets all the budget. But retention lives in these quiet moments between transactions.
