Yesterday in therapy, I admitted something I’ve been hiding for 28 years.

In 1997, when I was a freshman at USC, I did what a lot of freshmen do: I pledged a fraternity.

Two months into the semester, I got “dinged” — kicked out before initiation.

For almost three decades, I’ve told a different story:

 “I left the fraternity to take an internship at a sports agency. Always kind of regretted leaving…”.

That wasn’t true.

I didn’t leave.
I was asked to leave.
I don’t think my mom even knows that.

On paper, it’s a small moment in a long life. 

But for an 18-year-old who had lost his dad at 11, who was craving belonging and male connection, it was a setback.

Worse, there was no explanation. No feedback. No “here’s why.”

Just a brief conversation on a beer-stained floor where an older brother (dude name Blair, from Solana Beach) told me I didn’t belong.

So I filled in the gaps myself:

Maybe I was too chubby
Not attractive enough
Bad at drinking
Too awkward

Whatever the reason, the conclusion I absorbed was:

“You don’t fit in. And that’s your fault.”

For 28 years, I’ve chased belonging in different forms — companies, groups, labels, titles, achievements. 

I’ve also found myself in places where, again, I just didn’t fit: big PE firms, large public media companies, YPO, certain rooms where I felt a little “off.”

Yesterday, finally saying this out loud, I arrived at a different conclusion:

It’s okay not to fit.

“Fit” is not a moral judgment. It doesn’t mean you’re broken. 

It just means that environment, that group, that culture wasn’t built for you — and maybe you weren’t built for it.

The strange irony is that, as an entrepreneur, I’ve had to make these same “fit” calls about employees, vendors, even customers (not to mention ex-girlfriends). 

I’ve told people, “This just isn’t the right fit” — without always appreciating how loaded that phrase can feel on the other side.

I’m 46 years old and just now using a LinkedIn post to say:

I got dinged.
I felt ashamed.
I lied about it for years.
And I’m finally okay with not fitting in.

If this resonates with you: you’re not alone, and you’re not broken.

Sometimes, it’s just the wrong room.

Oh - and in case you were wondering, my usual "Therapy Thursday" was yesterday because of the holiday lol

One of the big myths American entrepreneurs love to repeat:

“Saudi Arabia (and the Gulf) are overflowing with capital just waiting to be invested in U.S. startups.”

Reality is almost the opposite.

The serious money in Saudi — whether it’s private investors or sovereign wealth vehicles like the PIF — is overwhelmingly focused on Saudi Arabia itself.

It’s not a giant ATM for the rest of the world. 
It’s fuel for a national transformation.

The mandate is clear:
- Build infrastructure.
- Create jobs.
- Support a young, fast-growing population.
- Enable a real middle class and family formation inside the Kingdom.

That means capital going into housing, logistics, tourism, entertainment, healthcare, education, advanced manufacturing — all the pipes and platforms a modern economy needs.

So if you’re an American founder dreaming of “Saudi money,” here’s the mindset shift:

Don’t think, “How do I get Saudi capital to fund my idea back home?”

Think, “How can my company bring capabilities into Saudi — technology, know-how, jobs, training — and help build what they’re trying to build?”

Saudi Arabia isn’t just a pool of capital. 

It’s a country in the middle of a massive buildout. When I was there it made me imagine what it was like in America in the early 1900s. 

If you stop treating it like a checkbook and start treating it like a partner, the conversation changes very quickly.

2025 has been an incredible year for us at AllStreet Wealth  

Here’s a quick recap of 2025:
- 65 new clients added
- 14 clients off boarded who weren’t great long term fits 
- 3 new clients signed already for 2026 with 10+ prospects on the calendar for Jan
- AUM growth from just under $20mil to $64m

In 2024, we did about $750k in revenue

Our goal this year was:
- low goal: $1mil
- mid goal: $1.25mil 
- stretch goal: $1.5mil

With a ton of hard work, we crushed $1.5mil this year 

And are hoping to get to $2mil next year (ARR of $1.8mil right now) 

It’s wild how efficient a team of an enrolled agent (he’s also a licensed financial advisor), director of ops, and a lead financial planner can be when we are all in our area of excellence

Fall reviews are 75% of the way over for us 

We’ve prepped for all but 3 (still waiting on info from them)

This is the time of the year where we:
- update tax projections
- nail down and complete all tax planning moves before year end
- go through and make insurance changes 
- make investment changes 
- update clients estate plans and beneficiaries

It’s an extremely busy, but valuable season

We’ve never received more nice messages, comments, etc about the work we do and impact we have on our clients lives

And it has led to a lot of referrals to business partners, family/friends, etc. 

Being a financial advisor can be one of the most rewarding jobs in the world

“No one needs a financial advisor, personal finance is simple”

Okay, tell me exactly what you’d do here, this is a new client situation of mine

One spouse owns a sole prop in NY that will net $2.5mil this year (business blew up this year, only made $250k last year) 

Other spouse makes $400k at a large tech firm with RSUs being withheld at 22%

Sitting on $2mil of cash and has paid no tax estimates this year 

These are the things you’d have to think about:

1. Sole prop is horrible in NY

No PTET and all SE TAX. 

Need to evaluate partnership vs S corp, QBID (is not an SSTB), reasonable salary, etc

S Corp has added tax of about 9% tax, so worse in NYC than most other places

But at this level, it is still better than Solo props due to less SE tax, QBID, and PTET

Or could elect to be a partnership. More SE tax, but still has PTET and lower entity tax. Added 2.9% is better than 8.85% S Corp tax

2. Retirement accounts to use through business

Sep vs solo, pretax vs Roth, salary needed to utilize it correctly if S Corp, etc 

Do you hire spouse? Or own a partnership with them? Does that add a full other $70k?

Is it worth adding a Cash balance plan?

3. Retirement accounts through w2

Pretax vs Roth

Mega backdoor Roth

Utilizing her ESPP 

4. Taxes

Catch up on safe harbor payments, get estimates on what they owe, moving cash to minimize other income taxes, etc

Tax all strategies to reduce tax (many listed above) 

5. Investments and cash

Determine the right amount of cash, where it should be, etc

Then get the rest invested, come up with right allocation and location for those investments to minimize tax 

Make changes without incurring tax 

Consider direct indexing as they’ll have lots of capital gains in the future from the equity comp 

6. Insurances 

Nail down life, auto, homeowners, umbrella, life, and ensure they’re protected well inside and out of the business 

7. Estate planning

Get their estate plan and trust in place 

8. College education

Use extremely high income now to superfund a 529 and be done with it 

The tax planning here leads to well over $100k in tax savings this year alone 

Yes... the average person can manage their financial life and do FINE

But with a great tax you can do way better than fine 

This is why and how we can add so much value to our clients lives

I hear it all the time: “I make too much money to contribute to a Roth IRA”

It’s true, you can’t contribute directly if your income is too high

But there’s a workaround: the backdoor Roth

Here’s how it works:
1. Contribute to a traditional IRA (non-deductible)
2. Convert that amount to a Roth IRA

This works since there are no income limits to a non deductible IRA

3. important things to know:
1. Make sure you have no other IRA balances by 12/31 (SEP IRA, Traditional IRA, Simple IRA, Rollover IRA) but inherited IRAs are fine 
2. Don’t forget to file Form 8606
3. Invest the dollars once converted!

Big thing to note here: this is why in a lot of cases the best place to move your old 401(k) to is to a new 401(k)

Becoming wealthy is about planning 

But spending looks different depending on your income

There are two types of millionaires:
- Low-income millionaires: built wealth by living below their means. Smaller home, modest car, flying coach, etc.

- High-income millionaires: can sustain bigger spending because cash flow is high. Large home, luxury car, first-class travel, etc. 

Both paths work. 

The key is understanding your lane and spending in a way your income can actually support

Financial planning at $500,000 is not the same as it is at $50 million

Once your net worth crosses certain thresholds, the tools, conversations, and objectives change

Why?

Because the risks, opportunities, and complexity all increase

At this level, you’re no longer just trying to grow wealth

You’re managing multi-generational wealth

Most people use the target enrollment option with 529s

But I hate them

Why?

They oftentimes are 40-50% bonds by 10 years out

I would much rather my clients have more in equities to get the most tax free growth possible

Then when 3 or so years out, move to 1 year in bonds

Then keep adding another year in bonds each year after

Why?

The market goes down for 9-12 months during a recession

Then on average takes about 2 years to get back to breakeven
