Ardent is a running gear startup on a mission to be the bridge between customers and their sporting aspirations. To realise this mission and as Head of Business Development, I have been very aware of the need to take a 'performance' orientation and have grappled with the perceived trade-off between the resources Ardent has and the extent to which we can produce a truly game changing or at least performance enhancing product/s with such resources. To offset our relative lack of resources (compared to industry leaders such as Nike) and to therefore still be able to produce performance improving running gear, I have set up a partnership with multiple departments (for example, Engineering) at Newcastle university. The university produces research and development (with use of world class facilities and expertise) that we infuse into our product development process and in return they receive real world project briefs that enhance the portfolios/experience of students about to enter the job market. As a result, Ardent has been able to produce truly performance enhancing gear at a fraction of the normal cost. 

I am currently in the process of building an online community for Ardent runners.

As part of the consulting phase of the Year Here program, I consulted for Camden Council. This work culminated in a comprehensive report, outlining a reimagining and design of Camden's social infrastructure of the future, underpinnned by a place-based strategy. As a complementary piece of work, in direct response to COVID-19 and as a way to amplify the community's sense of place, I built and launched a positivity map to capture the positive stories and random acts of kindness from Camden's response to the pandemic.

counseling for young people. In my time at this placement, I have was able
to drive through impactful innovation in the form of a new appointment
and text reminder system. This has increased booking efficiency and in
turn cut wait times for young people accessing the charity's services whilst
simultaneously reducing the amount of appointments missed by young
people.

As business development manager, I orchestrated a change of strategic direction for Storage Shepherd. I pivoted the company away from an 'Airbnb for storage' model to a less saturated and more pressing market opportunity; that being the disruption and modernisation of the self storage industry. Upon making this pivot, we gained acceptance onto the award winning Ignite Pre-Accelerator program in Newcastle.

In this role, I also increased Storage Shepherd's brand awareness and lead flow by conceptualising and organising the first of its kind 'Storage Social' event series which brought the North East self storage community together. This not only facilitated connections between self storage owners but also gave Storage Shepherd an opportunity to learn from and build trust with the 'supplier' side of the self storage marketplace.

As Marketing Manager, I initially conducted a full review and assessment of all marketing activities and later devised a five-step strategy (Attract, Engage, Capture, Nurture, Measure) to strengthen customer acquisition and retention moving forward.

I’m 26yrs old and I’m meant to be good at “tech” whatever that means.

Young = techie … right? Wrong.

Well, for me at least.

To tell you everything you need to know, my biggest IT accomplishment at school was learning how to save a file on Microsoft Word.

Tech and I just didn’t click…clearly! Or that’s the story I told myself.

Until I had to try to learn these skills to build the business of my dreams.

I started with no-code, then AI. It was painful. Just me and the internet. My dumb questions the only thing that gave me structure.

I soon realised I wasn’t the only one asking them.

For the past 3 years, I’ve been turning these *dumb* questions into free, fun and effective challenges for anyone to learn the same skills.

The Federal Government Should Pay Attention.

Verizon just laid off 13,000 employees. 

But here’s what they did differently: they announced a $20 million Reskilling and Career Transition Fund specifically for departing workers—focusing on digital training, AI skills, and job placement.

Most companies (and governments) treat exiting employees as sunk costs. 

Verizon treated them as future talent in an AI-transformed economy and invested in their next chapter.

Most layoff memos offer vague well-wishes and outplacement services. 

Verizon's CEO is doing something radical: treating career transition as a strategic investment, not a compliance checkbox.

What they're doing differently:
Dedicated fund for departing employees – They're funding digital training and job placement for people on the way out.

AI-specific focus – Explicitly building skills for the AI age, not generic resume workshops.

Public sector partnership intent – Acknowledging this is a systems problem, not just a Verizon problem.

The lesson? 

Your employer brand isn’t just how you treat people while they’re with you. 

It’s how you help them leave. (Hint, Hint DOGE)

But here's the real story: 
They could've been Blockbuster 2.0. Instead, they became Hollywood 2.0.

The Pivot That Changed Everything:
2007: DVD rentals peak
2007: Netflix launches streaming (everyone laughs)
2013: They create House of Cards (Hollywood scoffs)
2025: They own Batman, Game of Thrones, and Harry Potter

The Lesson? 

Your current business model isn't where you should settle.

Just like Netflix didn't wait for DVDs to die, you shouldn't wait for AI to disrupt you.

Right now, someone in your industry is pivoting. 

They're:
• Using AI to automate what took you 40 hours
• Creating content at scale while you're stuck manually
• Building the future while you're protecting the past

Great way to enhance your writing skills.

Writing isn’t dead ☠️ - It’s your superpower 🦸‍♂️ 

This is an insane time to be a great writer. You have one of the most powerful skills - what some call the ability “to be dangerous” in any role. But here’s the twist: many C-suiters are starting to question if that skill can be replaced by AI. 🤖

My take? Copy that’s polished, creative and captivating is more valuable than ever. Anyone who says otherwise either:
✅ Doesn’t know what good writing looks like
✅ Hasn’t worked with AI enough to understand its limits
✅ Or simply doesn’t read enough 📚

If you’re early in your career, here’s my advice:
👉 Keep writing about what you know and what interests you
👉 Use AI as a partner, not a replacement
👉 Read widely - experts in your field, leadership, history (skim the news, don’t drown in it)

For those further along: if you’re doubting your writing ability or wondering how to use AI effectively, carve out time to learn and build a plan for your growth.
