Ardent is a running gear startup on a mission to be the bridge between customers and their sporting aspirations. To realise this mission and as Head of Business Development, I have been very aware of the need to take a 'performance' orientation and have grappled with the perceived trade-off between the resources Ardent has and the extent to which we can produce a truly game changing or at least performance enhancing product/s with such resources. To offset our relative lack of resources (compared to industry leaders such as Nike) and to therefore still be able to produce performance improving running gear, I have set up a partnership with multiple departments (for example, Engineering) at Newcastle university. The university produces research and development (with use of world class facilities and expertise) that we infuse into our product development process and in return they receive real world project briefs that enhance the portfolios/experience of students about to enter the job market. As a result, Ardent has been able to produce truly performance enhancing gear at a fraction of the normal cost. 

I am currently in the process of building an online community for Ardent runners.

London Borough of Camden

As part of the consulting phase of the Year Here program, I consulted for Camden Council. This work culminated in a comprehensive report, outlining a reimagining and design of Camden's social infrastructure of the future, underpinnned by a place-based strategy. As a complementary piece of work, in direct response to COVID-19 and as a way to amplify the community's sense of place, I built and launched a positivity map to capture the positive stories and random acts of kindness from Camden's response to the pandemic.

In the first five months of Year Here, I was placed at a charity providing
counseling for young people. In my time at this placement, I have was able
to drive through impactful innovation in the form of a new appointment
and text reminder system. This has increased booking efficiency and in
turn cut wait times for young people accessing the charity's services whilst
simultaneously reducing the amount of appointments missed by young
people.

Storage Shepherd

As business development manager, I orchestrated a change of strategic direction for Storage Shepherd. I pivoted the company away from an 'Airbnb for storage' model to a less saturated and more pressing market opportunity; that being the disruption and modernisation of the self storage industry. Upon making this pivot, we gained acceptance onto the award winning Ignite Pre-Accelerator program in Newcastle.

In this role, I also increased Storage Shepherd's brand awareness and lead flow by conceptualising and organising the first of its kind 'Storage Social' event series which brought the North East self storage community together. This not only facilitated connections between self storage owners but also gave Storage Shepherd an opportunity to learn from and build trust with the 'supplier' side of the self storage marketplace.

As Marketing Manager, I initially conducted a full review and assessment of all marketing activities and later devised a five-step strategy (Attract, Engage, Capture, Nurture, Measure) to strengthen customer acquisition and retention moving forward.

Developed a social media strategy for Storage Shepherd that successfully boosted the reach and engagement of posts across the company’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by a total of 32% while also  increasing the level of traffic to the website from these platforms. Hey I’m Max 👋

I’m 26yrs old and I’m meant to be good at “tech” whatever that means.

Young = techie … right? Wrong.

Well, for me at least.

To tell you everything you need to know, my biggest IT accomplishment at school was learning how to save a file on Microsoft Word.

Tech and I just didn’t click…clearly! Or that’s the story I told myself.

Until I had to try to learn these skills to build the business of my dreams.

I started with no-code, then AI. It was painful. Just me and the internet. My dumb questions the only thing that gave me structure.

I soon realised I wasn’t the only one asking them.

For the past 3 years, I’ve been turning these *dumb* questions into free, fun and effective challenges for anyone to learn the same skills.

21k+ folks have already learnt no-code and AI skills via #100daysofnocode and #100daysofai challenges. I'm now opening the 100 School to apply the same formula to more skills 😊

I'm a solo-founder building this as a bootstrapped business with a tiny team. The only thing that's not tiny is our mission to build the most accessible pathway for anyone to learn tech skills. You in??

- Breaking down the core concepts of image sharing social media platforms and understanding MVPs
- Understanding databases and building them
- Introduction to app development
- Building screens, prototypes and enabling advanced features such as like/dislike, follow/unfollow, repost, comment and a dynamic feed for discovering fresh posts

The challenge was designed to be completed within 7 days, with 30-minute bite-sized lessons.

As Destination Manager, my number one priority was to highlight the best tours and activities across India and Nepal, and create memorable customer experiences around them. 

Using destination expertise and co-ordinating with different teams based in Bangkok and Berlin:
- I helped establish GetYourGuide's active presence in 17 new locations in India and Nepal through optimised inventory
- Generated new leads and managed the entire sales funnel, while also overseeing inbound sales leads
- Managed over 35 key accounts in the region, working closely with tour operators in co-creating tours and activities.

In 2019, my contribution impacted
- Net revenue growth of 480% (average quarterly YoY) in India
- Focus cities grew by an average 200% net revenue growth, and 195% more bookings.

As Research Assistant to Professor Dimitrios Buhalis at the eTourismLab, I worked on a joint project between the University, Bournemouth Borough Council and the National Coastal Tourism Academy, researching Smart Tourism Destinations.I have presented this research at the Global Festival of Learning ASEAN in Indonesia and Malaysia (March 2017) and the international conference on the Visitor Economy - Strategies and Innovations (September 2017). Poster presentations on my research have also been exhibited at several conferences and seminars.

Research and development for applications of IoT in the travel and leisure industry, particularly for Smart Cities and digital inclusion, identifying potential clients and writing blogs. Tasks also included lead generation, client engagement and content creation for social media. 

One of the reports I produced on Smarter Cities and Local Governments was circulated amongst businesses, local governments and academics to initiate the conversation on Smart Cities and their feasibility for local authorities. I also developed proof-of-concepts (POC) for the leisure sector, using beacons and sensors, with the help of developers in my team. One of this was using sensors to understand shoppers' behaviour in retail, while another pertained to using facial recognition in understanding customer satisfaction in spas. Although my POC was not tested in an actual facility, my research was used in a major pitch for the agency.

I was commended for my research skills, personable attitude and ability to take on new responsibility.

I established an enterprise with my family, selling handloom saris sourced directly from weavers, besides designing customised saris as per client's requirements. My tasks included accounting and finance, marketing through social media, negotiating with suppliers and liaising with exhibition organisers. 

We recorded over 75% profit within 4 months of establishment, without spending any money on advertising.

I like using technology to help simplify people's problems in travel. 


When I was 15, my biggest dream was to work in Human Factor Design. Along the way, I realised an academic pathway via a PhD did not excite me and started exploring options in other subjects that gave me joy - like travel. I had worked as a summer camp instructor for young adults, a business development intern for a travel startup and had started a homegrown business selling silk saris, before I applied for a scholarship to study Tourism Management in the UK. 
In 2 years I had:
- Attended a summer school in China, a profound experience in learning about culture and management
- Worked in a digital agency, developing proof of concepts for retail and tourism, using sensors and beacons
- Led a project funded by England’s National Coastal Tourism Academy in developing Smart Cities as Smart Destinations, and presented my research in the UK, Indonesia & Malaysia


After my graduation, I worked at GetYourGuide as Destination Manager for India and Nepal. My key role was to manage the entire sales funnel of tours and activities in these markets, and no two days were ever alike. One day I was co-creating new ways to experience the Taj Mahal with my supplier, and on another, I was scouting new leads on the streets of Kathmandu. 
In less than a year:
- I helped establish the company’s presence in 17 new locations
- Established an average quarterly growth of 435% (India) and 480% (Nepal) YoY
- Managed approximately 35 accounts and built a network of tour operators in the region.


Currently, I work at Holibob as the Production team's handyman - I manage onboarding new clients, project management, marketing reporting and operations - everything that's needed to ensure the success of a client. Interested to know more? Reach out via message.


Outside of work, I mentor young people interested in tourism and work on freelance projects for small, independent businesses.  I also spend my time learning, cooking, taking photographs and stopping to talk to every dog I encounter.
