June 2025, my wife had a "come to Jesus" conversation with me.
My family was paying for decade old lies I believed.

First, I believed the lie that my job 
• had to be important.
• had to look awesome to others.
• made me significant.
 
Next I believed the lie that my job
• was what made me loved.
• made me accepted.
• made me whole.
 
Then I believed the lie that my job
• had to make a lot of money
• it would give me financial status
• would make my family secure
 
 
But the truth really was
I was already loved, accepted, and whole without that.
 
And what my family and friends actually needed was
a healthy, secure, person that loved Jesus.
 
 
I believed the same lies for the first 13 years of my career.
Still in progress.
Always will be.

We got married young and BROKE. Making $37K
They said, "Wait." "You're not ready." "Get more stability."
We wanted to figure it out together.
 
I was working for a church and she didn't have a job yet.
We shared kids meals from takeout spots.
The rest of our meals were church event leftovers. (IYKYK)
 
We paid $990/mo for an apartment we called "the cave" because it was so dark.
 
But we wanted to figure it out together.
We wanted to look back and see something WE built.

Saturday, March 12, 2023.
My last ditch effort prayer in this exact spot.
 
"God, I'll do whatever you want. I'm done doing it my way.
But I want to run a business helping people."
 
The very next day, I threw out a post on LinkedIn.
Subject: former ministry people are some of the highest quality hires.
Over 600 comments. "me too" "right on" "so true"
 
3 weeks later, had our first ministry to marketplace client. (Bradley 👊)
 
 
Funny enough, I swore off working with church people after my own time in church.
And God laughed.
 
Am I the only hard headed one out here??

All your pastor really wants is to take a vacation where they don't have to borrow someone's beach house.
Crazy, I know.
 
After talking to 1,000+ pastors over 3 years, here's what I keep hearing:

They just want:
• their spouse to not have to work if they don't want to.
• to coach their kids' sports teams.
• to not live paycheck to paycheck… or in debt.
• to leave something to their kids when they die. 😬
 
Same as the rest of us.
 
Something needs to change.
Or they'll just keep coming to me.

Whatever is going on in this guy's life,
I hope it gets better soon.
I've never said this publicly, but now feels like a good time.
 

If someone is not sure about staying in vocational ministry or not,
I won't take their money.
 
That discernment process is important.
It takes wrestling.
It takes time.
 
Far be it from me to rush that,
or take someone away from their calling.
 
 
That would be a super awkward conversation in heaven. 😬

Started applying for $120K jobs,
3 months later I was applying to $65K jobs.
 
Coming out of my mega church job,
I thought I was super impressive until rejection, rejection, rejection.
 
The easiest thing to do when the vision wasn't working was just... to lower it.
Instead of looking at reality and fixing the real issue. (Like Thor)
 
I had no clue what type of job I wanted to do next,
or who would even hire me.
 
Eventually, I landed in HR doing talent acquisition.
And when I got on the other side, it all started making sense.
 
I've seen people get jobs at $70K AND over $200K doing the exact same thing.
They have clarity on the type of job they should be hired for.
They know how to talk about their experience so that it makes sense to the hiring manager.
They have a process to get interviews over and over.
 
They have a process that works.
 
 
So if you're in transition, don't be like Thor.
 
Align your vision with reality.
Create (or learn) a process that works.
 
P.S. This is what we do on the daily.
Helping ministry leaders get the clarity, wording, and process they need to land more interviews for jobs that fit them.

Lead pastor. 36 years old with 3 adopted kids.
Severance ending. No job offers.
Wanting 79K base in sales type role.
 
Before we worked together:
• Hadn't applied for a job in 15 years.
• 15 applications so far.
• 2 interviews. (13% interview rate)
• Trouble getting conversations leading to interviews.
 
After we worked together:
• Confirmed that sales was the route.
• Translated experience to match the job.
• Built the resume to start applying.
⬆️ all within 2 weeks.

• Then identified his 'team' and started having the right conversations.
• 1st interview happened within 3 weeks.
• Offer 1.5 weeks later for sales job at 85K base with over 100K OTE.
 
 
The real reason he got a job so fast (35 days) is because he committed mentally. Committed to learning the lingo. Committed to talking to friends. Committed to asking for help.
 
Job searching is 50% strategy, 50% mentality.
For those that recognize the fears around job searching and face them head on, those are the ones that get faster results. The rest is just following a process.

If I'm 70 and loved my work, but my relationships are bankrupt,
what is even the point?
 
I have 2 nightmares about getting old.
 
Nightmare 1 (I lived this one):
My work felt purposeful and close to God
but created tension with my wife and kids
and destroyed my health
 
Nightmare 2 (I'm fighting against this one):
I made a shoot ton of money, big house, nice car
but work stole time with my wife and kids
and distracted me from God
 
 
Both of these land me in the same spot.
Accolades, praise, cool titles.
But none of the stuff that matters.
 
I refuse to gain the world and lose my soul.

Just passed 1000 ministry leaders subscribed in 11 months. (what?!)
I just wanted to help a few people get a job.
So I wrote this one differently.
 
Its not a fluffy newsletter.
Its the one you'll unsubscribe from because it got you a job.
 
In depth strategy.
Job search tactics.
Last week's was a full AI prompt for writing resumes.
 
All subscribers took the assessment.
Now they're getting clarity and results.

I give away our entire process.
Nothing is hiding.
I want you to be able to do it on your own.
 
Oh, and the Interview Accelerator exists so you don't have to.

34 year old church tech director.
Never gets to sit in church with his wife. Working 65hrs/week.
Wife would love to stay home with 2 kids, but they can't make the money work.
 
Before we talked:
• not 100% sure what he wanted to do
• no time to job search with busy job
• fearful of "getting caught" job searching
 
We got introduced through another client
 
After we talked:
• Got quick clarity on sales as the next job through our Career Compass tool (he was really excited about it too)
• Translated church experience into words and phrases to put on his master resumes and use in interviews
• Discovered companies that he'd love to work for that would value his ministry background, especially on the tech and worship side.
• Started connecting with the right people by leveraging LinkedIn and our message templates to open doors.
⬆️ That led to an introduction, which led to an interview, which led to an offer 3 weeks later.
 
 
He went from 0 applications to offer in less than 80 days... which is actually really fast for a complete job and industry change. 

Here's how the speed happened: He got clarity and shot for that role hard and fast. If he didn't have clarity, he might have burned out with the high intensity effort. But once he got clarity on that next job, that unlocked everything else.

31 year old family ministry pastor making $65K.
Submitted resignation, no job yet.
Married, 2 kids, 1 on the way.
 
(The story of how he got his job is wild.)
 
Before we worked together:
• thinking sales or recruiting (but really wanted to be in Athletics, felt like it was a pipe dream)
• only hitting Easy Apply, because he couldn't network with the church
• 60 apps
• 7 interviews (high for Easy Apply!)
 
Introduced through a mutual friend.
 
After we started working together:
• refocused the vision on what he really wanted: to be in athletics
• worked on translating his experience that would make sense for an athletic office or athletic complex manager type of position (think YMCA, not Planet Fitness)
• crafted a "next step statement" elevator pitch to clearly outline what he was looking for next
• re-oriented his strategy to focus on connections and conversations instead of applications.
• through a connection (read the wild story below), landed an interview and had a job offer two days later as the General Manager of a sports facility!
 
 
This is the power of a great next step statement. He shared the clarity and vision with his parents. A few days later, his parents went to their church's prayer meeting and there someone asked for prayer to find a general manager for their sports facility by end of the year (this was December 5). Next day he had the interview. By Saturday he had the job offer.
 
Jobs don't have to be posted on job boards for you to get them. You don't have to formally apply all of the time. It really takes getting clear on what you want to do next and sharing that clearly with others. The connections will happen.

I knew I needed to reach out.
I knew scrolling job boards wouldn't work.
But there was one problem: No one could know I was job searching.
 
My entire community worked, led, attended the church I worked for.
7 years of my adult life.
All the same people.
 
I was so afraid I would get "found out."

 
And then I read about a concept that changed everything.
 
Fear setting.
It helped me put "reaching out to people" in its place.
 

Here's how it went:
 
1) What's the worst thing that could happen
- Maybe I'd get ghosted
- Maybe someone calls me weird
- Maybe I'd get reported to my boss
 
2) Now, what's the best thing that could happen?
- someone becomes my advocate
- someone offers me an interview
- I get a job offer
 
 
On the scale from worst to best, which one would impact me more?
Ultimately, I chose the risk of reaching out.
 
Had a job 2 months later.
Changed my life forever.

 
If it aligns with your vision,
The scary thing is probably the way to it.

November 2018, I thought my ministry run was over.
And I was right.
 
I was not cutting it, broken, and a disappointment.
 
But God finds ways to redeem the broken things.
And my story wasn't as unique as I thought.
 
Vocational ministry, turns out,
isn't the only way to do work that matters.
 
 
123 (and counting) former ministry jobs placed later,
and I'm getting texts like these.
 
What I thought was the end, was just the beginning.

A client submitted 100+ apps, less than 3 interviews.
Now they're getting 1 interview for every 3 applications.
Same background. Different strategy.
 
Applications only put your name in the system.
Interviews are opportunities to get offers.
 

Simple change:
Go from applications to conversations.
Introductions that lead to interviews. 

People hire people.

Who is thinking about honoring humanity in the push to AI?
Everything should go faster
Technology is savior
And people are expendable.

I'm not talking Terminator or the Matrix. 
I'm talking about the 50% of entry level white collar jobs that are supposed to disappear in the next 2-5 years.

Everyone is trying to AI.
But not many are trying to preserve personhood.


Matt Randerson is thinking about it differently.

The mission is the enhance the human work experience.
AI as a tool to enhance creativity and connection,
not replace it.

Leaders, don't be another statistic doing mass layoffs.

In an effort to hate running less, I started running at lunch time.
Not just because I hate running in the cold...
But because I really enjoy moving my body when it is light outside.
 
If I don't get rest at night,
sleeping in doesn't kill my run.
 
If I have a rough morning at work,
it is a great release.
 
If I have an afternoon full of calls (every day),
it clears my head before 4 or 5 calls in a row.
 
 
The mid day run is doing me right at the moment.
But, summer is coming.
 
Suggestions on how to get the mid day run effect 
but not be sweating for the entire afternoon??

I'm all ears!

This is a new one, but I'll take it!
