100 years in a few seconds. This is how glaciers changed. 🧊

Juergen Merz and Michel Galati turned photographs of Swiss and Austrian glaciers into short AI-animated movies. 

From past to present - we can see the impact of climate change. And it’s striking!

We don’t see this change day to day, but on such time scale it’s tremendous. And it’s getting faster. Just in the last 2 years Switzerland lost 10% of its ice. 

Imagine, how our planet will look like in the next 10 or 20 years?

We can’t bring these glaciers back. But how can we make sure we still let nature thrive?

What’s new in sustainability this week in 1 minute! (back on Fridays 😉)

3 wins: 
1. COP30: Denmark announces the most ambitious climate plan yet! To cut emissions by 82% by 2035. Go Denmark! 💪

2. China’s emissions reach their peak and are starting to fall faster than expected! Why? Renewables, rapid adoption of EVs, and lower emissions in the construction industry. 

3. The EU: landmark decision to include climate education into a school curriculum: from kindergarden to 12th grade. 👫 Yes to that!

3 warnings: 
1. World’s second largest rainforest in Congo is approaching a tipping point. 🌳 With 10,000 plant species it removes 600 million tonnes of carbon/year. But that number is falling. We have a decade to save it. 

2. CDP analysis: businesses expect 420 billion USD of extreme weather risks in the coming years. BUT! These risks can be mitigated with just 80 million USD investment. 

3. The EU lawmakers broke our heart & 
weakened sustainability due diligence directive. 90% of companies obligated to report are now out & don’t need to fix human rights and environmental issues in their supply chains. Whaaat? 🤦‍♀️

1. Big news from COP! Brazil officially launches “Tropical Forests Forever Facility” to raise $125 billion to protect rainforests. Over 50 countries agreed to support. Let’s keep forests standing. 🌳

2. Also at COP: Spain and Germany pledged €100 million funding for vulnerable countries through World Bank. 

3. Finland uses nature to improve kids’ health. 43 daycare centres rewilded their yards. In 1 month -> kids showed stronger immune responses and healthier skin microbiomes. 👶

3 warnings: 

1. The EU weakens its climate targets just before COP30. Climate ministers agreed on a watered-down target: 90% emissions reduction by 2040 BUT with a possibility to weaken this goal. 

2. New investigation: fossil fuel projects are threatening health of 2 billion people worldwide. Cost of inaction isn’t just environmental, it’s deeply human. 

3. Climate disasters are getting super expensive! First half of 2025 was the costliest on record for the U.S.: damages from 14 extreme events have soared to over $100 billion.💰
