I think analog will be a bigger focus for me and my family in 2026.

(which is a weird thing for me to admit too as I love all things digital)

8-years ago I got rid of the last of my DVD's. The ones that had been lingering in the back of the TV drawers. Alongside the very dusty DVD player we'd not used for years. 

This Christmas though, my daughter started collecting DVDs of some of her favourite films (she has a top 20 list - which is filled with cool films). 

We'd dropped into a charity shop, and she spotted the '3-for-£2' section where the DVD's and CD's were. Had some money on her card - so started her impromptu collection (6 in total from that one shopping spree). 

However, it really irked me that I'd not still got any of the technology for her to play these on when we got home. 

I used to have. 

But at some point 8-10 years ago I felt like DVD players and CD players were outdated, and superfluous to the requirements of our modern living. 

For me, media formats like that have felt obsolete for nearly a decade. I grew up with cassettes, saw CD's blossom, felt MP3's dominate, and realised that streaming services replaced my need for owning collections of 'stuff'. 

It felt nice to have the space back in the house (I used to hoard loads of this stuff). 

But, on seeing my daughter's enjoyment at the physical holding and ownership of media is making me really nostalgic.

And I don't think it's just a one-off things she's experiencing too. 

There's a steady build up of sales across records and CDs again across all my kids, their friends and their year groups. My eldest is 19 - and got into our CD collection about 4 years ago. Now has his own collection building nicely. My youngest (12) has got the CD music bug this December too. 

One thing I am pleased about is that I was a DJ for around 6-years back in the early 2000's. But, I never got rid of the folders and folders of CDs. Or the bunch of vinyl records I've owned since my teens. 

Even though we haven't had a record player for 10-years, I always wanted to hold on to something physical so that I could share my passion for media with my kids as they grew up. 

It feels like this year (2026), it's really taking shape in their lives. 

And the move away from streaming and monthly ownership through subscriptions seems like a novel experience for them. 

Ironically, it was deemed a novel experience to NOT HAVE to own libraries of DVDs and music for us. 

So yeah - It's January, and right now I'm now looking to purchase a new CD and Tape player. Which is something I'd not thought about owing for many, many years. 

It all feels a bit full circle, and slightly surreal. 

Like waking up from a futuristic dream, and getting back into the everyday life of putting on an album. 

It'll be odd not to hear any adverts between the tracks. 

Though, more bizarre that ads are the normal experience when listening to music.
