People say I’m lucky.

Today I’m heading to London. Then to South Africa. 🇬🇧🇿🇦

In London, I’m meeting a client I’ve never met before. Our company is growing, without me needing to be in every room.

Then I’m heading to South Africa, to see a man from Shanghai. He became a client. I met him for the first time in India. Today, he’s a Co-founder, and he’s not the only one joining us. 

This isn’t luck.
That’s years of getting on planes.
Walking into rooms uninvited.
Starting conversations without guarantees.

Doing it when it was inconvenient.
Doing it when it was expensive.
Doing it when nothing came from it.
Until something did. 

People don’t see the repetition.
They see the result.
Then they call it luck.

Luck is just visibility. 
Applied relentlessly. 
Seen by the right people. 
In the right way.

11 hours from the UK to South Africa.
Straight into a 12-hour boardroom session.
5 hours sleep.
Back in for another 12-hour day.

No soft landing.

I’m out here with three new Co-founders putting the finishing touches to something we’ve built the right way.

It’s already delivering.
It’s already gaining traction.
What’s coming next will take it up another level.

We’re doing this properly.
Not over Zoom.
Not half-in.
Properly.

Different strengths.
Same standards.
Hard conversations.
Clear decisions.
Total alignment.

“Working hard” looks good on LinkedIn.

In reality it’s sleep deprivation, pressure, too much caffeine, and choosing progress over comfort, again and again.

This is the bit people don’t see.
This is the bit that matters.

It’s dividing.
There’s uncertainty. 
Misinformation

Our discusssions. 
Not theory.
Not hype.
Not sci-fi.

The necessity for all firms globally is clear. 
More profitable.

Some people commute from Newcastle to London for the week. I commuted to South Africa. 🇿🇦

What will stay with me isn’t the travel, the lack of sleep or the copious amounts of caffeine. 

It’s the rooms I found myself in with the people moving this industry forward. 

The ambition.
The candour.
The shared certainty that South Africa isn’t behind.
It’s positioned to lead.

Accountancy firm owners, If you’re obsessing over becoming a LinkedIn influencer while your margins are shrinking, you’ve already lost the plot.

Do you look at your least profitable clients and reprice them?

Good. You should. Here’s the better question…

Do you look at your least profitable work? I don’t just mean at client level. I mean across:

You.
Your co-directors or partners.
Your seniors.
Right the way down through the team.

Do you know what each of you spends time on that generates the least profit?

We all know the Pareto Principle.
“20% of clients generate 80% of profit.”

So why isn’t 20% of your time generating 80% of your profit?

Is it what you charge?
Is it rising overheads?
Is it because you’ve won the wrong clients?
Is it the cost of manual processing/inefficiencies?

It’s probably majority/all of the above.
