NightstaRx is a Syncona backed company established to pursue the gene therapy treatment of Choroideremia to prevent the deterioration of eyesight in patients with this X-linked disease which causes loss of sight during the mid 40-50 years of life. Early clinical studies by Robert MacLaren have shown promising efficacy and good safety. The therapy for this indication is to replace the faulty REP1 gene in the eye with a functioning copy in an AAV vector. NightstaRx aims to gain regulatory approval for this therapy with ensuring GMP of the product and agreeing the pivotal clinical path. Www.nightstarx.co.uk

Syntaxin was a successful biotech spun out of the HPA that was developed by myself and my management team, with the help if course of our excellent scientists, to a stage for acquisition to ensure the further investment in the recombinant botulinum toxin technology. Ipsen acquired Syntaxin in July 2013 and the site continues as Ipsen's centre for toxin engineering, complementing well the Ipsen expertise in toxin biology. I left Syntaxin with the acquisition and now work through Think10 as I discuss new opportunities.

Action Against AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. It is the most common cause of sight loss in the developed world. 

​An estimated 196 million people in the world have a form of AMD, a figure that will increase to 288 million by 2040. Around 10 million people have significant sight loss. That is expected to rise to 20 million by 2040.

Our vision is a world where AMD is stopped before it causes sight loss.

Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC)

In this role, I directed the Disease Foundations Network at the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC), based at the University of Oxford. 

At the same period I also led a Work Package with the the European Commission’s IMI project ‘Unrestricted Leveraging of Targets for Research Advancement and Drug Discovery’ (www.ultra-dd.org) and represent the University of Oxford in the EC/IMI project ‘European Lead Factory’ and the European Screening Centre (www.europeanleadfactory.eu/about/assets/eu-screening-centre/).

My passion for Open Drug Discovery started in 2004 when I joined the SGC at its inception. I was involved in the planning of scientific strategies, communications, and alliances with external collaborators and partners. I worked with multiple institutions to facilitate the exchange of expertise and establishment of joint research programmes with SGC’s international partners, including charities, academia, industry and government agencies – always exploring the potentials of Open Access models. 
I also co-led the establishment a new SGC laboratory in Brazil – the first node of an international effort focused on novel kinases. 

In this role I established:

(i) The SGC I'MPATIENT programme: Creating new frameworks and partnerships with patient and disease foundations to bridge the basic science to patient-driven drug discovery efforts. 

(ii) The Oxford Martin School Affordable Medicines Programme: Coordinating a mutidisciplinary global network* to generate data-backed and non-biased evidence comparing different models of drug discovery (e.g. closed vs open) to base recommendations for policy making in order to stimulate innovation and collaboration.

Lee is a molecular and structural biologist with a wide international network in drug discovery, including charities, academia, industry and government agencies. 

Previously at the University of Oxford, Lee is an experienced leader in setting up partnerships and alliances with multiple stakeholders to accelerate discoveries for drug discovery. He designed and implemented several strategies in two of the largest and most successful international public-private partnerships for drug discovery – the Structural Genomics Consortium and the European Lead Factory. 

Along with his scientific endeavours, Lee also advised high-level government representatives from different countries and charitable institutions on policy and strategy to integrate scientific, societal and economic impact.
