17 Pieces of Practical Deal Origination Advice for M&A Advisors Going Into 2026


(1) You’re taking too long to publish advice. Ship the insight on the exit readiness trap you just saw. Then iterate.

(2) Go hard on LinkedIn. It’s the B2B-oriented channel with the most predictable growth for reaching business owners. Traditional cold calling is volatile and hard to scale.

(3) There’s no magic cadence. What is the maximum cadence you can follow while providing real, actionable value (not just deal announcements) and not burning out? Follow that.

(4) Don’t be too sales-oriented in your content. "Hire me to sell your business" is desperate and not engaging. Lead with education.

(5) But give semi-regular CTAs. LinkedIn is great for driving discovery calls and moving qualified sellers deeper in your funnel.

(6) Please stop doing those automated ChatGPT comments. Any sophisticated seller can tell they’re generic. They signal low effort and are a negative mark on your personal brand.

(7) Approvals by committee butcher authority. You don’t need 17 revisions from the whole practice for a one-page Seller Readiness Checklist. Trust your lead advisor's judgment.

(8) Sellers are viewing your content in-feed. They rarely scroll deep into your profile. Make sure the first three lines of every post deliver immense, actionable value.

(9) Ideate the topic (pain point) and the hook before writing anything else. Great expertise often gets buried because the headline is boring.

(10) Junior analysts aren't the best people to handle your lead origination social presence. Dedicate a senior advisor's time to high-value thought leadership or hire a specialist when it's time to scale.

Two months ago, I was advising a seller who asked me for my entire process playbook before signing the mandate. I gave it to him. He signed with a competitor a week later.

Did I worry? Nope. 
↳In fact, here's the philosophy that explains EXACTLY why I will keep giving my best advice away for free.

To set the stage:

→My firm specializes in Exit Readiness & Pre-Sale Structuring.

When I start working with a new M&A client, 

the hardest habit I have to break is the "ego-posting."

Advisors naturally want to prove they are good at their job, 
so they lead with closing stats. It feels safe.

But picture this: 

A founder doing $20M in revenue. 
It’s 11:00 PM. 
They’re exhausted, 
scrolling LinkedIn in bed, 
terrified about what happens if they sell.

Do you seriously think they care about your 
"record-breaking Q3 stats"?

No way.

I came across this example of an M&A Advisor who grew their deal flow to $25M+ in mandates using extreme transparency and short, sharp Anecdotes as a pillar of their strategy.

This advisor is a great example of a boutique firm using Relatable Pain Points and Zero Corporate Jargon to increase visibility and unlock origination from quality sellers.

Why Anecdotal Transparency works (even in M&A):

↳You can test and iterate rapidly. Posting a quick, anonymized story about a Due Diligence nightmare takes five minutes. If it doesn't 'hit,' zero cost. Just move on to the next pain point.

↳They are great for highlighting customer pain points. An anecdote about a seller's messy P&L (without naming names) instantly attracts other sellers who are struggling with the exact same issue.

↳They are platform native. They break the corporate press-release mold and are a type of content people actually stop scrolling for. When paired with a strategic follow-up, they are a great way to draw attention to your solution.

Does every M&A firm need to share raw stories and use a light tone? 
↳No. Many shouldn't.

↳Also no.

But can it be a lever to pull if your goal is to stand out from the generic "market update" crowd and attract sellers who are looking for a real partner?

There’s a simple reason why the most successful Deal Announcements and Thought Leadership posts come from your personal profile—not the company page.

Just look at the typical engagement numbers (it's wild):

The company page gets less than 1% of the relevant engagement that your personal profile gets on the exact same post.

People want to follow, engage with, and hire other people. 
↳They don't hire logos.

Takeaway: 

If you have an important announcement (deal closing, new service offering, market insight) coming out, plan to distribute it from your personal LinkedIn profile.

This is especially true if you're a boutique or middle-market firm without the name recognition of a global investment bank. 

They could probably get away with just using the brand account for major announcements—your firm probably can’t.

Principal-led content isn't ‘new,’ but I predict it will only continue to pick up as the best engagement source.
