If OpenAI fails against Google, Anthropic, ByteDance, xAI, Meta, Alibaba and others, don't say it wasn't about leadership. There are lines no CEO should cross, and unfortunately what Sam Altman has done to Mira Murati is tragic. 

Mira Murati played a pivotal role in OpenAI's transformation from a research lab into a leading commercial AI company, serving as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) from 2022 to 2024 and briefly as interim CEO. She was key to the development, strategy, and release of several of the company's most influential, groundbreaking technologies. 

While OpenAI is losing the battle, not just for talent but in product execution, real questions are coming up again over Sam Altman's toxic behavior.

OpenAI burnt $15 Bn on Sora alone and an app that refused to take off. $5 billion annually to generate copyright-infringing memes. That’s not how you launch apps or build products.

Reports suggest OpenAI's large training runs in 2025 failed to produce models better than prior versions.

GPT-5 launched (which I covered) to widespread disappointment. Users called it "underwhelming" and "horrible."

Now the internet is moving on to Gemini and Claude Code. ChatGPT is kind of history already. More concerning?

OpenAI is “falling apart in real time”

ChatGPT traffic fell in November. Second month-over-month decline of 2025. Meanwhile Gemini jumped to 650 million monthly active users. The company that was supposed to build AGI can't keep its chatbot competitive.

OpenAI lost $12 BILLION in a single quarter according to Microsoft's own fiscal disclosures.

Deutsche Bank estimates $143 billion in cumulative negative cash flow before the company turns profitable.
