Your team isn’t the problem… You are!

Harsh? Maybe!

True… definitely! 

I see the same pattern play out almost every week with the founders and CEOs I work with.

And it’s not what you’d expect.

The thing that stalls growth isn’t usually the conflict itself… it’s the leader avoiding it.

I get it. 

Most CEOs think they’re being strategic by staying out of difficult conversations. The internal dialogue goes something like:

“Give it time, it’ll blow over.”
“They’re professionals, they’ll figure it out.”
“I don’t want to be that bad cop boss.”
“Now’s not the right moment.”

Meanwhile, here’s what’s really going on:

- People burning hours venting to each other instead of working.
- Passive-aggressive Slack messages and tense meetings.
- Small irritations turning into real dysfunction.
- Projects stuck in limbo because everyone’s waiting for someone else to act first.
- Revenue targets missed, not because the product’s wrong or the market’s bad but because the team is in crisis.
- ‘War and Peace’ style emails blocking your inbox.

Here’s the thing…

Most leaders don’t see themselves as part of the problem. Not because they’re blinkered, but because they’re either conflict-avoidant, struggle with tough conversations, lead too gently for what the situation needs or just can’t see the impact of their silence.

Avoiding confrontation feels safer in the moment. But it creates a tornado effect of spiralling conversations very quickly!!

When the same concerns keeps cropping up, the same two people butting heads, the same performance issues going unaddressed, the same misalignments, that’s not coincidence.

That’s a signal. And it’s pointing at you. 

Because leadership isn’t just about nailing the strategy deck or managing the P&L. It’s about managing people when things get uncomfortable.

So before you decide it’s a “them” problem…

Take a breath.
Look at yourself honestly.
Ask the question most leaders never ask:

“Is this actually on me?”

The best leaders I know aren’t the ones who dodge discomfort. They’re the ones who lean into it quickly, clearly and without drama.

And when they do? Everything shifts. 

The team aligns. The tension lifts. Things start moving again.

Is a team conflict draining you?🤨 Read on.. 

I constantly hear this…

“It’s the time that I’ve dedicated to this situation and the time I’ve lost on the business that has been the most frustrating”.  

Time you can’t get back.  

Sound familiar?

If you’re an empathetic business owner who has an open door policy when people problems manifest, you might find that you focus more time on managing it than you do on running the business. 

It can suck oxygen out of your day. 

Here’s how you can change that.  

👉🏻Set boundaries: With yourself and your team.  Put an end to the ‘do you have a minute’ conversations that require more than a quick chat about business of the day. Otherwise they spiral into a platform for a long drawn out tirade stealing your time and mind! 

👉🏻Schedule a meeting: Prepare for the conversation so you’re sharp and not caught off guard which is when conversations can veer and meander off track. 

👉🏻Pause: If you feel you’re being sucked into a dialogue that you’re unsure how to navigate, pause the conversation and say you’d like to think about it and schedule a time to pick it back up.  This gives you breathing space to seek expert guidance.

Don’t be reactive, be proactive in difficult dialogues.  Take the lead.  Problems escalate when you allow them to.  Either through avoidance or mismanagement of them.  

And neither will bring a positive outcome!
