When Students Stop Waiting for Permission

Last week I wrote about the widening trust gap between employers and college graduates and how early-career opportunities are increasingly filtered before resumes are ever read. This week, I saw a counterexample that deserves attention.

My wife, Michelle Sohn, teaches a college course called Career Strategies at Fairleigh Dickinson University. 2 of her students looked at the same labor market everyone else sees, fewer entry-level roles, tighter screening, and rising expectations and made a different choice. Instead of waiting for an opening, they created one.

They banded together to launch a consulting business offering digital marketing services to a clearly defined niche they understand. No illusion that it would be easy. No assumption that someone owed them a job. Just a clear-eyed assessment of demand, skills, and execution.

This is exactly the behavior employers say they want but rarely see early. Initiative. Accountability. Learning by doing. The willingness to sell, deliver, and adapt in the real market rather than optimize for credentials alone.

The data supports why this matters. Self-employment and small business formation among younger workers has been rising modestly as traditional entry points narrow, particularly in services and digital roles that don’t require heavy capital investment. At the same time, employers consistently report prioritizing candidates who demonstrate applied experience and ownership, even when formal tenure is limited. These trends are visible across U.S. labor market data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Business Formation Statistics and our own Revelio Public Labor Statistics (https://lnkd.in/enbSUezZ).

What struck me most was not that these students started a company. It was why they did it. They understood that waiting to be picked is no longer a strategy. Building proof of work is.

For students, this is a reminder that professionalism today isn’t about titles or perfect resumes. It’s about reliability, follow-through, and evidence that you can create value for someone else. For employers, it’s a reminder that the candidates you’re looking for may not come from traditional pipelines anymore.

Not every student should start a business. But every student should think like one.

That mindset shift may be one of the most important career strategies of all.

We're witnessing the fastest workforce reallocation in a generation. Companies are pivoting their talent strategies in real time, and the only reliable signal of what's actually happening is where the people are going and what skills they're building.

Traditional financial metrics tell you what already happened. Workforce data tells you what's happening now and what's coming next.

If you're making investment decisions, competitive assessments, or strategic bets without visibility into talent flows, hiring velocity, attrition patterns, and skill composition, you're flying blind in the most dynamic labor market we've seen in decades.

This is not about HR analytics. This is about understanding the fundamental building blocks of value creation before they show up in earnings reports.

The question isn't whether workforce intelligence matters. It's whether you can afford to be the last one to figure that out.

For 40 years, every major tech wave followed the same rule: massive capital investment created massive job growth. Hardware, telecom, software, internet, mobile, each one employed millions.

The AI build-out just broke that rule.

Microsoft is spending $80 billion on AI infrastructure. Google and Meta are each spending $60-75 billion annually. Amazon is building data centers across the country.

But a $1-5 billion data center now employs 25-150 people. That's it.
The mobile revolution created 11 million jobs globally. The AI revolution is creating rounding errors.

One permanent job per $13-54 million invested in Virginia's data center hub. Data centers consume 4% of U.S. electricity while employing 0.01% of the workforce.

This isn't a cyclical slowdown. It's a structural break.

So if tech is no longer the job-creation engine, what is? The answer might surprise you and it has nothing to do with coding.
