Omar was very kind.

The lessons I wish I had learned 15 years ago….. 

My mentor once told me something I didn’t fully understand back then:
“𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞.”

For a long time, I believed hard work was everything.
That if I delivered results, my career would naturally move forward.

But with time, I realised:
Results matter, but the relationships you build determine how far those results can actually take you.

Your network isn’t a list of names.
It’s a circle of people who guide you, support you, challenge your thinking, and open doors you didn’t know existed.

And when I talk about networking, I don’t just mean going to events or adding contacts.

Start with 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠
- Collaborate with different departments 
- Understand how the organisation works 
- Build relationships with decision makers 
- Become someone people trust and enjoy working with

Then there’s 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠
- Connect with people in other companies
- Learn new ways of thinking and working
- Build relationships across your industry
- Stay close to how the world is evolving.

If I could go back 15 years, I’d tell myself to talk to more people, ask more questions, build relationships long before I “need” them, and stay endlessly curious.

Early in my career, I was the one getting lost in my career blind spots.

I started focusing on self-awareness, reached out to mentors, and built a visibility map. 

Small, consistent steps transformed how I’m seen and opened doors I didn’t even know existed.

Why reflection is the most underrated leadership habit? 

For the longest time, I reflected only once a year, when setting my resolutions.

It gave me some clarity, but it was occasional, almost like a checkpoint.

monthly, weekly, and sometimes daily.
Everything changed.

I became sharper in my decisions.
More precise in my planning.
Caught mistakes before they snowballed.

Reflection turned my experiences into wisdom.
