Ulta Beauty just got hit with a class-action lawsuit over its Conscious Beauty claims where basically, consumers are arguing that “clean” isn’t as clean as they thought.

Here’s the thing: in the U.S., words like "clean", "non-toxic", "sustainable", and "natural" aren’t actually regulated by the FDA or FTC. There’s no legal definition. Brands can use them however they want...until someone decides they feel misled.

As a copywriter, I see this all the time. Brands want to sound values-driven, but these buzzwords live in a grey area. And when there’s no standard, “clean” can mean whatever the marketing team says it does! 

The takeaway? If you’re going to use vague terms like “clean” as a brand, you better define it clearly. Back it up with transparency and clear terms. Otherwise, the line between storytelling and greenwashing gets very, very thin.
