Mastercard and Banco Santander have processed Europe’s first live end-to-end payment executed by an AI agent inside a regulated banking environment.

Yes, you read that right.

An AI agent initiated and completed a real transaction using #Santander’s live payments infrastructure through #Mastercard’s Agent Pay framework.

This week, senior executives are meeting to lay the groundwork for a domestic alternative to Visa and Mastercard, which currently process around 95% of UK card transactions.

That level of dependence is not just a commercial issue. It is a systemic risk.

Geopolitics, sanctions, cyber incidents, or policy shocks can turn infrastructure into a vulnerability overnight. We have already seen how quickly payment access can disappear in other markets.

The initiative is being chaired by Barclays UK CEO Vim Maru and backed by major institutions including Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds Banking Group, and Nationwide Building Society.
