A True Leader Protects You

When I led my first real project, half the team didn't really do anything...

A few people even disappeared when deadlines hit.

And two people – just two – kept the whole thing alive.

They stayed late.
They fixed what others broke.
They refused to let it fail.

We love to say “teamwork makes the dream work.”

It sounds nice.
It even rhymes.
But often it’s not true.

Here are the 3 types of people in a team:

1/ A few people carry the mission.

These are your DRIVERS.
They don’t wait for direction.
They just make it happen.
They treat every project like it has their name on it.

2. Most people just follow along

These are your PASSENGERS.
They get going once things are already moving.
They’re good people, just not self-starters.
They ride the momentum, but they rarely create it.

3. Some people pull it backwards.

These are your DRAINERS.
All talk. No output. Lots of excuses.
They slow progress in the name of “better alignment.”

What should you do with each of these?

Give your Drivers power and pay them very well.

Give your Passengers tasks that stretch them a bit.

And give your Drainers a mirror and a moment to decide whether they want to be on the team at all.

I spent one of the days shadowing a senior manager in the KPMG Tech Growth office. This involved listening to Tech CEOs pitch their businesses as well as networking with the business founders informally.

What do I do? I trade in Origin Stories - the pivotal moments that turn ordinary into remarkable.

Mine started in a Glasgow council-estate bedroom, age 21, smack in the middle of lockdown. My mum had just passed away. Grief, zero network, less than zero confidence. So I did the only thing that felt like connection: I opened a laptop, hit “record,” and asked strangers to tell me how they got from there to here.

A few late-night edits and a mountain of imposter syndrome later, Origin Story was born.

🎙️ Since then, I’ve:
Unpacked the beginnings of Jimmy Carr, Seth Godin, Example, Sir Tom Hunter, Sinitta, Rory Sutherland, the Founder of Reebok - and even shared my own story with HM The Queen.

Now clocking 2,000,000+ listens and peaking at #3 in the UK charts.

I spent the evening with Tinie Tempah.

Podcasting has become a vehicle for something I never expected: meeting my childhood heroes.

At the weekend, I spent the evening with Tinie Tempah in Glasgow – first night of his new tour.

I was invited down to the show, hung out backstage and had dinner with his team. 

I’d been speaking to his manager about my podcast Origin Story… then I woke up to a message from Tinie himself. He wanted to connect.

He hasn’t toured here in over a decade. He took 10 years out to focus on being a dad.

But you’d never have known.

Glasgow was sold out. Every word of every song was screamed back at him like they’d just come out yesterday.

Watching it, a few things hit me:

➡️ He built a product (his music) that has stood the test of time.
	
➡️ That product created a community through nostalgia – people reliving the best nights of their lives together.

➡️ This whole tour is a response to the death of the UK club scene, and a reminder that clubs are more than nightlife – they’re community centres for a lot of people.

I must’ve been about 12, a kid from a council estate, when his songs were in the charts. His lyrics sounded like someone a few (thousand) miles ahead of me on the same road, trying to work their way out.

Sitting with him now, talking about stories, work and Jiu Jitsu…

That’s not something I’d even have known how to dream about back then.

What I’m taking from it:

👉 If you create something that genuinely connects with people and gives them a sense of belonging, it can outlive trends, algorithms and even a decade of time away.

We’ll be recording a podcast together in the coming weeks/ months to talk about all of this – music, clubs as community, and what it means to come from “ordinary” beginnings and build an extraordinary life.

I swear podcasting has become a vector to achieve my childhood dreams 🤣
