I used to say yes to everything because it was easier in the moment. But it was expensive later on.

I learned that I’d be much better off setting boundaries than feeling
resentful that I’d agreed to do something I didn’t have time to do.
 
Here are the top scripts I still use.
Steal them.
Tweak them.
Use them today.
 
A meeting I do not need:

“Thank you for thinking of me. I am heads down on a few other priorities right now and so I won’t be able to attend this. If you send a short note with the goal and one question you need answered, I will reply by Friday.”
 
Pick my brain:

“I appreciate the invite but I’m currently limiting such things so I can focus on something I need to get built over the next couple of months. If you’ve got a specific question, reply here and I will share a quick answer when I can.”
 
Quick favour that is not quick:

“Thanks for asking. I don’t have the capacity to do this well right now, so I am going to pass. Here are two resources that should be able to help you.”
 
Project that I don’t want to be involved with:

“This does look interesting and thanks for thinking of me. However, it doesn’t align with my current focus, so I will decline for now. If that changes, I will reach out.”
 
Time ask during focus hours:

“I’ll be offline for deep work until 2 pm. If it can wait, I can come back to you after that. If it is time sensitive, please proceed without me.”
 
Intro request I cannot make:

“I avoid surprising people with intros. If you send a three sentence blurb I can forward, I am happy to send it on to them and they can reach out if they’re interested.”
 
Scope creep:

“I really like the sound of these additions, however, what you are asking for is outside the scope of our original agreement. Would you like me to price it up as an additional piece of work?”
 
Job offer or opportunity that is not a fit:

“I am grateful for the offer. I am optimising for a different direction right now, so I am going to decline. I wish you the best finding the right person.”
 
Friend or family invitation I cannot accept:

“Thank you for thinking of me. I can’t make it this time but I am sure you’ll all have a great time, and I’ll look forward to hearing all about it!”
 
There are a few principles that make saying no easier:
 
Say no quickly.
Because silence creates false hope.
 
Be brief.
Because explanations invite debate.
 
Offer an option that works for you.
A later date. A different scope. An async option.
 
“No” protects your energy.
Yes should earn its place.

How to Say no without guilt

Most career decisions aren’t made strategically.

They’re made emotionally.

A layoff.
A shiny title.
A spike of fear dressed up as “opportunity”.

So people chase movement, but not always the right direction.

The result is the same doubts, just at a higher pay band.

A few years ago, I realised I needed a better way to decide.
Not more thinking.
Better filters.

So I built a simple framework I now use for every big decision.

I call it The Decision Grid.

It asks just two questions:

1. Does this increase my freedom or reduce it?
2. Does this expand my impact or shrink it?

If it doesn’t do both, it’s a no.

Not a “maybe”.
Not a “for now”.
A no.

Because every meaningful career is built on the same trade-offs:

Freedom over fear.
Impact over image.
Long-term leverage over short-term relief.

That’s how people stop being busy and start being significant.

You don’t need more clarity.
You need a framework that removes bad options fast.

Use this grid the next time you’re at a crossroads.

If it grows your freedom and your impact, it’s a smart move.
Everything else is noise.

A simple test for better career decisions

There’s something I’ve seen again and again with senior professionals, especially those who’ve outperformed quietly for years.

They become the foundation.

The person others lean on.

The one who makes it all work behind the scenes.

And for a while, that feels like recognition.

But eventually, the appreciation starts to sound the same.

– “Thanks for holding the fort”

– “You’re so dependable”

– “We can always count on you”

There’s nothing wrong with being the safe pair of hands.

But it becomes a problem when that’s all they see.

And if your value has become expected, you’ll wait forever for promotion.

I don’t think most people get stuck because they stop performing.

I think they get stuck because their environment stops imagining them any differently.

And unless you actively reframe how you’re seen, you’ll be respected, thanked… and left right where you are.

That’s not a reflection of your ability.

It’s a reflection of the system you’re operating in.

If that’s resonating – you’re not alone.

But there is a way through it.

And it doesn’t start with working harder.

Outperformed for Years. But Still Stuck?

"Just work harder" is the most damaging lie told to good people in broken workplaces.
 
And the best workers always hear it most.
 
When companies are a complete mess, have no money, or rubbish bosses, they praise staying late over actually getting things done.
 
So the message becomes:

Try harder.
Stay later.
Push through.
 
But here's what nobody dares say out loud:
 
Working harder in a broken system doesn't fix the system.

It just destroys the people trapped inside it.
 
Top performers react to broken systems by:

- Doing way more than their fair share

- Fixing stuff that isn't their job

- Bottling up all the pressure

- Confusing being a hero with making a real difference
 
They don't whinge.

They just cover for everyone else.
 
And that's exactly why this lie keeps working.
 
"Just work harder" sounds noble.
It sounds fair.
It sounds like you've got control.
 
But it sneakily shifts all the blame away from useless management, terrible planning, and backwards priorities - straight onto the person already giving everything.
 
The real move isn't working more.
 
It's asking the brutal questions:

- What's properly broken here?

- What am I propping up that deserves to collapse?

- Where am I losing my energy?

- What would actual progress look like, not just barely surviving?
 
Being brilliant at your job isn't about grinding yourself to bits.
 
It's about choosing where your effort actually makes a difference.

Just work harder is toxic advice in broken companies

A small shift in how you think can change everything about how you live.

The biggest barrier between you and your goals isn’t talent or resources.

It’s the way you talk to yourself, especially when things feel hard.

We all slip into the same thoughts:

“My timing isn’t right”
“I don’t know enough to start”
“What if I mess this up?”

One of my favourite parts of interviewing legendary Financial Services boss  Benny Higgins wasn’t banking.

It was this tiny pattern in how he moves through the world:

He presses the bell. 🛎️

He told a story about turning up at a gallery in Paris.

Door closed. Locked. Most people would shrug and walk away.

The bell he rang was the bell at Galerie Kraemer.

It turned into a private tour with Olivier Kraemer.

Learns a story you’d never find in a guidebook.

Walks out with a memory that sticks forever.

Then I realised… I’d just done the same thing.

Before recording, Benny sent me on what I can only describe as a “tour of Soho through his eyes.” 

I flew to London to do my reconnaissance.

He sent me to private members clubs, mediterrean restaurants and even The SOHO Hotel to try a cocktail named after him.

One stop was his tailor the legendary John Pearse.. not a shopfront, not a fancy sign.

Just a doorbell.

I press it, expecting nothing.

And suddenly I’m inside, getting 45 minutes of stories, history, craft, and warmth. 

I learn about Benny via the man that knows him for size.

I learn about John’s life too - dressing The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix..

The kind of human moment you don’t get on Instagram.

It sounds small, but it isn’t.

Because “pressing the bell” is basically how life changes. 🛎️

Not because the world is fair.

But because most people don’t even try the door.

They assume they’re not the type of person who belongs in there.

They don’t send the message.

They don’t ask the question.

They don’t make the intro.

They don’t follow the curiosity.

Benny’s whole life has that thread running through it.

He even said "I got to know John the same way you did.. through ringing the bell".

Curiosity isn’t just a personality trait.

It’s a strategy.

Press the bell.

Worst case: you’re back where you started.

Best case: you walk into a room that changes the direction of your life.

Inordinate amounts of luck sit on the periphery of everyday interactions. 

Keeping ringing the bell or play so loud out on the street that someone comes out to see what you're doing.

I filmed a podcast in a skatepark with one of the biggest rock bands in the world right now - Neck Deep. 🛹

Billions of streams. Global touring from Brazil to Japan. Sold-out UK runs. A band that helped define modern pop punk.

And we shot the conversation in a skatepark in Glasgow.

I spent the day skateboarding and talking with Ben Barlow. 

Not just about music, but about the stuff underneath it: identity, expression, class, politics, compassion, comedy, and the real pitfalls that come with being “known”.

What surprised me most is how Ben carries himself. 

He’s thoughtful, socially aware, and deeply intentional about the responsibility that comes with influence including ethics in the industry and why artists (and leaders) have a duty of care in how they show up.

We also went back to the origin story: Neck Deep didn’t come out of an industry pipeline. They emerged from Wrexham, Wales - early tracks built in a working class family home, shaped by a scene, a community, and that stubborn belief you only get when you’re building something from nothing.

Filming it in a skatepark was personal for me.

I grew up on the fringes. Skateboarding was a home away from home when times were tough and this genre gave me a community where being a misfit was kind of the point. In a strange way, both skating and Neck Deep helped me feel like I belonged.

That’s why this episode feels sacred to me.

It’s shot in beautiful cinema by my amazing team. All my pod boys love this band too so this was special for us all.

I really like Max Jones & Zeroo Degrees. Not just because I was surprised this morning with this written piece about me

But because I didn’t go to university.  

I couldn’t afford to. 

I then started a career and a podcast that became my self elected university.

My job gave me CIMA chartered accountant status.

My podcast let me interview the worlds best minds and get awarded altMBA with Seth Godin & MAD//Masters by Rory Sutherland scholarships.

Learning from The Queen was also a bit of a bonus. 

I wish I asked about education on money. Thought she’d have been good as her face was on it 

It’s been a hell of a ride and the next chapter is looking like an adventure!

Max is building Zeroo Degrees for people once like me. It’s just fantastic and look forward to being a continued part of their journey

David went from a council estate in Prestwick to briefing the Queen on social mobility after building one of KPMG’s most impactful internal networks 👀

🏡 David attended a local state school and backed himself early. At 11, he was already running a small confectionery business, baking and selling fudge and macaroons to classmates, learning first-hand how effort turns into money 👨‍🍳

🏫 While others took the standard route, David went further, even taking an Open University course alongside school to strengthen his profile.

Despite being offered a university place, he chose an apprenticeship instead, believing earning while learning would give him a head start 🤝

That path still tested him...

David applied for the KPMG apprenticeship and didn’t get in first time. Rather than walk away, he refined his application and came back stronger the following year, becoming the FIRST apprentice in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to specialise in management consultancy 🥳

📊 At KPMG, he worked on major public-sector projects and built a reputation for taking responsibility early. Alongside his day job, he launched a Social Mobility Network within the firm, growing it into a large mentoring community and later stepping into a national co-chair role.

In 2021, during KPMG’s 150th anniversary, David was selected to speak to HM Queen Elizabeth II, representing social mobility from lived experience 👑

Alongside his corporate career, David launched the Origin Story podcast from his bedroom with no contacts and a basic setup. It has since reached over 1.5 million people and featured guests including Jimmy Carr, Seth Godin, and the founder of Reebok.
