A True Leader Protects You

When I led my first real project, half the team didn't really do anything...

A few people even disappeared when deadlines hit.

And two people – just two – kept the whole thing alive.

They stayed late.
They fixed what others broke.
They refused to let it fail.

We love to say “teamwork makes the dream work.”

It sounds nice.
It even rhymes.
But often it’s not true.

Here are the 3 types of people in a team:

1/ A few people carry the mission.

These are your DRIVERS.
They don’t wait for direction.
They just make it happen.
They treat every project like it has their name on it.

2. Most people just follow along

These are your PASSENGERS.
They get going once things are already moving.
They’re good people, just not self-starters.
They ride the momentum, but they rarely create it.

3. Some people pull it backwards.

These are your DRAINERS.
All talk. No output. Lots of excuses.
They slow progress in the name of “better alignment.”

What should you do with each of these?

Give your Drivers power and pay them very well.

Give your Passengers tasks that stretch them a bit.

And give your Drainers a mirror and a moment to decide whether they want to be on the team at all.

Last Saturday, I held the last session of the Financial Life Workshop where I showed attendees how to build a personal brand and monetize their knowledge. 

It was a bit unconventional. 

No slides. No writing board. 

All I did was speak from the heart, sharing my eight-year journey with eager listeners. 

One thing that stood out is how often we complicate this thing. 

Your brand is what you want to be known for. 

Maybe that's your job, or a skill you have built over the years. 

It could be something that comes naturally to you. 

What counts is showing others how it has helped you and can help them, too. 

Then show up and spread that message. 

After 2 hours unpacking personal branding and fielding questions, I say FLW25 was a resounding success.

I remember when I began blogging on WordPress back in 2014, and they would share all these lessons about writing and blah. And one day, I saw an article that said, "learn the rules so you can break all of them." 

Honestly, that was the most freeing statement I ever saw. 

Because all these "how to" suddenly start to feel like a noose tightening around your neck. 

People can't simply 'be' anymore without putting up a performance. 

I want to be. 

I want to do a great job, go home satisfied knowing that I did my best, and not worry about some office politicking and showing face. 

I want to write and not think about whether it's educating or entertaining (go watch Kevin Hart if you want a laugh), because I have something to share. 

I want to put on my camera, make a video (and watch some online) without the dramatic edits and flashing lights. 

I love to create. I want to create and give it away when someone needs it, without being salesy or pushy or soft selling or told I'm giving it away for free when I can sell it. 

Heck, maybe I'm asking for too much because I remember a time when life was easier. Or at least less demanding on a public scale.

Now, it's performative showbiz dressed up as value creation. 

I'm exhausted.

- New devices
- Knowledge market - Yes, that course!
- Gadgets masquerading as efficient options

Everyday living have now become a battle for attention and money. It's insane.

And unfortunately, it will only get worse. It will become harder to protect your mind from the onslaught.

The world is telling you what you need. 

You have to refuse this.

There's a lot of talk about spending above your means, but can we look at the possibility that you might be spending too little?
